.net - Logging From Msbuild Custom Task Using Console Class?

Feb 28, 2011

I'm trying to convert an existing command line tool into msbuild custom task.This tool logs messages and errors using the System.Console class.I've added to the tool's assembly a class that inherits from Microsoft.Build.Utilities.Task and calls the tool main function, and the custom tool works fine - but no messages/errors are displayed (on the Visual Studio output window).I would like to avoid changing the original tool's code (otherwise I could change every "Console.Error.WriteLine" to "Log.LogError").I thought of changing the stdout and stderr streams of console by calling Console.SetOut and SetError before calling the tool's main function. For that, I would need to implement a class that inherits from TextWriter.

Logfiles Not Matching From IIS And Custom Logging Fro ASP.NET Webservice

Mar 19, 2012

When some calls my webservice this is logged to the IIS log file and I also log the request (after is has been processed) to a custom log file for statistics purposes.

I use the following function to log to file:

Public Sub Log(ByVal Message As String, ByVal Level As LogEntryLevel, ByVal Additional As Boolean)
Dim base As String = "C:SERVERlog"

[Code]....

How is it possible that the IIS logs are empty and yet my application logged something from the local network? At the time, no at on my LAN sent that request. No one was home and we don't have a wireless network. Did I have an unauthorised intrusion?

Logging From A Class?

May 23, 2012

I have a class for serial communications (call it CSerial), based on a property value (CSerial.LogLevel), I'd like to produce various levels of logging information about data sent and received to the serial port.Given that it's a reusable class, there's no way of telling whether the log data should be sent to the console, a text box, a file, etc. This would be determined by the application using the class, so I can't write all of the different output options into a method in the class.Question:What's the best way to implement this? I have some ideas:1. Create a Log method and then "override" it in my main application to handle the most suitable form of output? Can I "override" a method as part of an instance? Or do I need to create a new class that inherits my original one, override the method there and then create an instance of my new class?

GUI Class - Logging Options With BackgroundWorker

Jan 10, 2010

I have a GUI class and a database class. I do something like:
Dim db as Database = getDatabaseObject(logTxtBox)
db.executeNonQuery("some update command here")

Within executeNonQuery I connect to the db, execute the command, disconnect and catch the exceptions. logTxtBox is the GUI txt box I want log messages written to. Currently it writes something like:

Connected to DB successfully
Executing "some update command here"
Excepetion: ........
Disconnecting from DB

I feel like this isn't the best structure for my logging. As soon I kick off executeNonQuery with a BackgroundWorker instead of with the main GUI thread I cannot access the GUI's logTxtBox from the BackgroundWorker's thread. Is there a better way to implement this kind of functionality?

Custom Task Scheduler Service?

Jun 12, 2012

I have been working for some time on a service that will act as a task scheduler and perform a shutdown action at one of 3 given shutdown times. Before you cringe and ask why not use the task scheduler, I should explain that permissions do not allow users to "create" scheduled tasks and therefore a creative work-around is required. In any case, I am still new to VB, but am including my code below. I want the service to check an alarm time every minute and launch a shutdown application (in the user's context - if logged in) if that time is NOW.

Force MSBuild To Compile For 32-bit Mode?

Jul 2, 2009

I'm using MSBuild (via NAnt) to compile a bunch of VB.NET assemblies. Because these assemblies depend on COM Interop, I need to guarantee that they run in 32-bit mode on 64 bit OS's. I can get the executable assemblies to compile to 32-bit by changing the project in Visual Studio, but I'd really like to be able to force all of the executables to be compiled to 32 bit mode on the build server.I've tried a number of command-line parameters to MSBuild with no luck:

/p:Platform=win32
/p:Platform=x86
/p:ProcessorArchitecture=x86

Asp.net - MSBuild _CopyWebApplication Not Copying <link> From Vbproj

May 11, 2011

We have a CMD file which loads an MSBuild XML file and builds and publishes our VB .NET Web App. I noticed today that one of the user controls we're using is not being copied to the UserControls folder in the output directory. However when I build and publish the project from within Visual Studio 2008 that file is there.

I believe the reason this is happening is because the file that is in the UserControls folder in the project is a shortcut to a file in a different solution within the same project. The ItemGroup XML in the MyProject.vbproj file looks like this:

<Content Include="..OtherSolutionUserControlFile.ascx">
<Link>UserControlsUserControlFile.ascx</Link>
</Content>

In the MSBuild.xml file we have, the following is being run after the solution has been built:

<MSBuild Projects="$(ProjectRootPath)MyProject.vbproj"
Targets="_CopyWebApplication;_BuiltWebOutputGroupOutput"
Properties="OutDir=$(BuildFilesPath)" />

why the shortcut is not being copied to the OutDir?

IDE :: Visual Studio / MsBuild Freezes While Building?

Dec 5, 2009

I have recently stumbled across a problem in the last week where Visual Studio (both 2005 and 2008) will lock up while building my solution. The status in Visual Studio will show "started building" or however the first message reads and then just sit there. At this point, the IDE will lock up (focus is lost and I can not regain it) and my machine's CPU usage will go to 100%. The only way to stop it is to force quit the application or process (either Visual Studio or my Command prompt if I am using MSBuild directly). Of course, the system still seems to be trying to process something because my machine still sits at around 100% basically forcing me to restart my machine to try again.

MSbuild Getting The Current Configuration From The Solution File?

Jul 31, 2009

In my VB.NET project I have three configurations DEBUG|TEST|RELEASE.

Currently when I am building using MSbuild and TeamCity I hard code the configuration, which smells badly!, to TEST

<Configuration Condition=" '$(Configuration)' == '' ">Test</Configuration>

Now before everyone screams at me not to hardcode this, the reason this was done was becuase we could NEVER seem to get $(Configuration) populated.

So my question is within MSBuild how can I read the currently selected configuration from the solution file commited to SVN?

.net - WP7 Custom Class UI Binding?

Feb 4, 2011

I have a map with a MapItemsControl in my WP7 app that contains pushpins bound to items in a collection of custom classes. The pushpins are bound to properties of the item in the collection via a DataTemplate.When an item is added to or removed from the collection, all pins display correctly, with properties as per bindings, but when just an items' properties are modified, the UI does not update. The bindings just seem to get values from the source item upon loading, but I'd like them to keep the UI elements updated when the source collection items' properties are updated.To illustrate, I'll create a similar example:

Heres a custom class:

Public Class Box
Property CurrentColor As Color
Property Location As GeoCoordinate
End Class

[code]....

Whenever I add or remove items from TempBoxes, the pins all render as they should (e.g. if I specify a color in the collection item, the pin shows the color).Tapping on the item triggers the BoxTouched sub, which causes the item's color to change in the collection, but the UI doesn't change (pin color stays the same).To get the UI to update the color, I have to get it to render the pins again, by adding something like this to BoxTouched:

BoxControl.ItemsSource = Nothing
BoxControl.ItemsSource = TempBoxes

Using A Custom Class In HashSet

May 30, 2010

I created a custom class which just stores 3 byte values, (R G B to be exact), which constantly change. So my idea was to store that class in a HashSet, then create a new instance of the class (with different byte values) then add that to the HashSet. There can be duplicates, which is why I decided to use a HashSet, which will ignore an item if it's allready been added. Doing this on a List would be too slow.But I've ran into a problem. Adding a custom class to hashset seems to only allow 1 to be added. I assume this is because its hashing the class object while ignoring the data (byte rgb values) it contains? Is there a way around this? It's possible to convert the RGB to Color and just use that in the HashSet, but conversion is a bit too slow.
