Local System Account And Proxy Environment?
Feb 16, 2010
I have a Windows service running on Local System Account. The service connects to a remote webservice, and donwloads a file. Now I installed the service in an environment with a proxy server (http://proxy:80"). The result is that in the eventlog I get error:"unable to connect to remote server". When I start the service with a (test) account, everything works fine. Can someone tell me how I can handle a proxy environment with a service running under local system account?

I have a WCF Service, I won't waste anyone's time with copy/pasting a basic implementation here, just imagine it as being the standard "Echo" example you see scattered around MSDN. Let's say I host the Service Library using IIS / a web app. Let's also say I publish the website to varying environments, local, shared dev server, varying test servers, and of course varying live environments. We'll also assume that the WCF gods smiled down upon us and the deployments went without a hitch.
Now I want to write an app (lets say WPF app for some clarity). When the app starts, I want a drop down listing all the available environments. I don't mind hard-coding or supplying (by means of a config file) those environments, but kudos points for linking any articles showing LAN discovery of deployed WCF services?
When the user has selected their chosen environment, I want the app to be able to call a method on the service (in the correct environment). Now I could do this with a big select case/if statement, instantiating the appropriate proxy class for the environment selected, calling out using the proxy class, etc. I could even pass the class around from method to method as an object and then use select case/if statements alongside TryCast/DirectCast to ascertain which environment the provided proxy class belongs to.
I'm bordering on the idea of selecting an environment (none in particular, just one of them) and on the assumption that all deployments/environments have identical code, instantiate the proxy client with the endpoint details of my chosen environment. I lose a form of type safety, but is that ok? Is that the done way?

FormA calls DialogB where user cancels DialogB which exits via ForceTermination(), see insert.Caller FormA check for DialogResult not = OK, which it isn't, and I can see this in debug as Abort(3).However, the code continues merrily along its way until I get a 'null reference' error which I'm trying to avoid via Force Termination().This is caused by the user cancelling DialogB, a selection process to get a database (SQL) instance.[code]

I have a vb.net 2008 application that is supposed to run at startup. After meeting certain conditions, the PC is supposed to restart. Below is the code that is failing:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("shutdown", "-r -t 00 -f", myUsername, myPassword, myDomain)
myUsername and myDomain are both strings while myPassword is a SecureString. The application works properly when execute manually, but give the following error when executed from startup (either by placing in the startup folder or by adding to the registry):
The directory name is invalid
Also, the program executes properly when the last 3 arguments are left out and the user has the necessary rights.
How do I force a restart using an specific, alternate user credentials on startup?

But my college uses a proxy so when I connect my laptop I need to change the internet settings in my web browser to view web pages. how I would send requests via a proxy server in VB.NET? Or is there a piece of software that I can download which tunnels all connections or is there a setting in win7 does this?

I have developed an ASP.Net 2.0 application and I am facing problem in sending email from my Web Server. Following is the VB code I have used to send email from my web application. Thing is when I try to send email from my local system (laptop) the email goes out fine and reaches the recipient address instantly but when I try to send email from my web server it fails. My hosting provider gave me a relay-host address for sending out email. The email goes out fine but the relay host has an annoying amount of delay in email delivery which is a problem during the sign up process.
Here is the code I am using:I have imported system.net.mail in my code and used async="true" on the aspx page.
Private Sub SendMail(ByVal actcd As String)
Dim mailMessage As New System.Net.Mail.MailMessage
mailMessage.From = New MailAddress(support@ihomejobs.com)
[code]....
I have tried the above settings and they work fine from outlook and the application when tried on my laptop but these settings fail on web server.I want to send email from my web server without using a relay-host.

I've been reading a lot of articles here and there, really, for the past two days, searching for a good local storage system. I have no immediate use for now, so I am just exploring my choices. By saying 'local storage system,' I'm talking about some sort of database used for applications that let users manage and organize personal accounts (bank accounts, web site accounts, application licenses...). I do use XML to store user settings. But if you have to manage lots of information locally, XML won't probably be good enough, I'm afraid.
So what are choices Visua Basic users? Well, as I often mention, I develop Mac software products. And I use SQLite. In fact, every one of some 40 apps sold at Mac App Store uses SQLite for good reasons. I know that you can use SQLite with Visual Studio after installing a package from sqlite.phxsoftware.com. But I don't know if your application can reproduce a database file when necessary. That being said, I'm looking for a system that I can use to create a file programmatically especially when the user launches it for the first time. So what do you use to locally manage large information? SQL Express? SQLite? XML?

I am trying to create a data entry system for a local community group. I am working with VB.NET 2010 and MSAcess 2000. I am completely new to using a DB in VB.Net. I have created a form with the membership table bound as details on the form and the classes they are attending as a DataGridView. I used all the Visual Studio GUI tools for this. It was reasonably straightforward once I got the hang of things. My problems arise when I try to ensure that a user cannot move to a new record or create a new member without first saving any changes they have made.
I am using ColumnChanging events in the ...DataSet.vb class to set flags to indicate whether any data values have been changed on the form. My problem is that the ColumnChanging events for the classes DGV fire immediately on changing the data whereas the ones for the member details don't fire until I start to move to a new record. I don't know if it is important but my member navigation is achieved by means of a combobox on the form that lists the member names from the table. I have absolutely no idea why this works - it just did; the form updates as soon as the user selects a new member in the combo box.

I'm developing application in VB.NET 2008. Here i have Mask Text Box with mask "0000/00/00" (i,e yyyy/mm/dd ).
but when i change the system date separator to "-" in control panel then all mask control is taking 'yyyy-mm-dd'.
I don't want to change mask text box date format based on local system setting. Always this should accept only yyyy/mm/dd .

My final goal is that striking F12 prints the date (through SendKeys) in the application/window having currently the focus (Word, Excel, Outlook, whatever). I have consequently implemented a globak keyboard hook (system-wide), which is running well (source code below).
My concern is that I would like to prevent any other local treatment based on F12. For instance, striking F12 under Microsotft Word prints the date is the open document (which is fine!) but also launches the "Save as..." dialog box, since F12 is a local shortcut/keybinding under Word. (Actually, the date is printed within a field of a the "Save as..." dialog box). I want to avoid this.
In other words, my aim is to improve the "hook" below so that striking F12 does what I want (which is already the case) but nothing more. That is to say, I would like that, except my treatment, the system "forgets" that F12 was striken.
