We would like to create a client-server architecture application that the server can control all client computers connected to it (e.g shutdown) and we would like to put a security login and a desktop lockeron the clients. The process of the system is that when the clients starts, the desktop is locked and ofcourse the user can't access the desktop unless he/she logged-in. And when the scheduled time (e.g 1 hour) is done, the client computers where automatically shutdown like the Time Logger Softwares

Excel Spreadsheet Opens With The Error "this File Is Not In Recognizable Format"?

Apr 9, 2009

[Background]:I created a Winforms App that reads data and spits it out into an Excel Spreadsheet. On my computer, I have Microsoft Office 2003 and inside of the Visual Studio Project, I referenced COM Object "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library". The Executable is on a shared directory and end users can run the application and generate the reports themselves.

[Problem]:Problems arise when an end user with Microsoft Office 2007 runs the application, generates the Excel Spreadsheet and sends it to someone with Microsoft Office 2003, the Excel Spreadsheet opens with the standard "this file is not in recognizable format" error and when you push "ok", the data shows up as symbols (garbled text).

[Question]When I reference "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library" in my project, how does the .Net Framework (or my Application) find this COM Object object when it is ran from another CPU?I guess, I would like to know how references work. When you reference DLLs in a VS.Net project, compile the program and then put the execuable on another PC, how does VB.Net go about finding those DLLs you referenced or is it part of the compiled program?

I suspect when a user running MS Office 2007 runs my app, it is running a 2007 dll instead of a 2003 dll.However, I would think an error would be thrown if this was the case.

How To Create Pivot Table On Excel Spreadsheet

Jan 7, 2009

How to create a pivot table on an Excel spreadsheet via code. The reason I took so long is because I added a reference to the Excel Interop 12.0, rather than the Excel Interop 11.0. I assume that 12.0 is for Excel 2007, while 11.0 if for 2003 (or whatever I have). If that assumption is correct, this will cause me a bit of trouble, as all the people using the program are in the process of moving from 2003 to 2007, and I should have moved myself, but didn't for some reason unknown to me (I thought the upgrade was pushed out to my computer when I was at work, but I don't seem to have it anymore). However, my concern is that the objects needed to create a pivot table in the 12.0 library are significantly different from the objects needed to create a pivot table in the 11.0 library.

I don't believe I can late bind to solve this, because there will need to be different steps taken depending on the version, since the objects have different interfaces. It appears to pertain only to pivot tables (for what I'm doing), as I was able to create the workbook, the worksheets, and export all my data with some old code that I had, and all of that worked with both libraries, the difference is just with the pivot tables because the interfaces have changed, such that the methods needed for one library don't even exist in the other one (and the code crashes, but that's probably because I have the PIAs for 2003 installed, and not 2007).

How To Create Spreadsheet Based On Filtered DataSet

Jul 6, 2010

I am trying to create a spreadsheet based on a filtered Dataset. The problem is I cannot connect to XL. I get the following error:
Warning1Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'Microsoft.office.interop' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases.

From these lines of
Imports Microsoft.office.interop
Imports Excel = Microsoft.office.interop.excel

Another issue is I only have XL 2000, and I won't be able to get 2003 anytime soon. 2003 is what the target computer is using. I would like to develop the app with 2000 and make the appropriate changes to 2003 when I get upgraded. I couldn't get any information on the 2000 PIA here: [URL]. After reading this: [URL] it almost seems like I don't need the 2000 PIA. Many of the techniques described in this document involve the use of IAs for the Office applications.

For Office 97 and Office 2000, you can autogenerate these IAs using TlbImp. Office XP includes pregenerated (and optimized) IAs that you should use instead of autogenerating IAs. An IA distributed by the owner of the original COM server is called a primary interop assembly (PIA). You should always use the specific version of the IA that matches the version of Office you're targeting. I just want to develop the app. Then I can download the 2003 PIA, right? I would use this: [URL].

OleDbException Saying Spreadsheet Is Full When Inserting To Excel Spreadsheet

Nov 11, 2011

I have a VB.Net program that reads in a flat file, and then parses line by line, formatting the data into different spreadsheets in an excel workbook (each line can be any 10+ different record types so I parse and put in appropriate excel sheet).

For smaller sized flat files (under 10mb), the parser works great. However, I am trying this on a file that is over 120mb (400k+ lines). While running, I will get an OleDBException saying that the spreadsheet is full. Now I am pretty confident that Excel can handle a much larger data set than a flat file. So I assume this exception is not giving me the true story as to what is really occuring.

I open a connection, and then parse each line in the file, inserting each row into the excel file. I assumed it would be bad performance wise to open/close the connection between each insert. Could this be causing the issue? Any ideas what I need to do to handle such a large file? There are cases where the flat file can be over 500mb.

To actually do the insert into excel, I am just doing the following (I construct an sql query based on the type of row and values parsed):

Dim conn As New OleDbConnection()
conn.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + ExportLocation.Text + "" + importFileName + "-PVF.xls;Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=YES"""

Table In Access2007 DB Gets Overwritten When Updated?

Nov 6, 2011

I'm trying to access 2 tables within the same DB in Access 2007, but I have a problem when saving information to one of the tables, I can do it with one table but when I try to save the information to the second table the data gets overwritten, not sure why, because I use the same procedure for both of them, just changing the variables to avoid mixed data, this is the code that I use to connect with the DB and fill the DataSet:

Try
dbProvider = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;"
dbSource = "Data Source=.\Almacen.accdb;Jet OleDB:Database Password=Slackware"

[code].....

Again, it works fine when saving info to one table, but using the exact same procedure (with different variables) saves the new data but overwrites the previous information
