Making A Compiler - Generate An Executable ?

Jun 19, 2009

I have started a project that is like a compiler, but very simple. Basically no coding required for the user. My question is do you have to convert the vb.net code into ASM?, (which i can do if necessary). Or how do you generate an executable with vb.net? I have seen it done with such things as cryptors, if you know what those are .

Generate Executable From An Executable?

Jul 24, 2011

I Actually want to provide a new service which requires creating executables on the fly from executables generated in vb.net. For example lets say I have a form with a textbox and in that textbox we pass an argument which is for example the serial of the product, then we have a button which once clicked will generate an executable on the fly which has also a textbox requiring that serial to run? That was only an example but the main thing is how to generate that exe on the fly.

Ok, so I'm working with a team of people/programmers and we are all trying to explore the possibilities within Visual Basic 2008. As such, we are all working on our own programs at the same time, but all for one small organization. Well, I'm working on making an installer that will bascially do as follows:

Generate A Single Executable File With 2005 Express Edition?

Mar 18, 2010

We use VB to create an HMI for an industrial environment. Currently, the computer we use has VB2005 Express Edition installed. When the application is developed, we take the Release folder which contains 7 files and place in on the computer with a shortcut to the executable.My boss stumbled upon another integrator that has a single executable. They apparently can stick this executable on any computer and it will run. He says that the "visual basic runtime" is included in the executable and it "just runs".I know just enough about VB to do what I need to do and am not overly familiar with all the inner workings. I seem to recall VB5 & 6 having a single executable as long as the runtime was installed already.Does VB2005 have the capability of a single executable?

Making A Project Into An Executable File?

Jun 28, 2010

I'm very new at using Visual Studio (about 3 days!). I want to create a project that I created into an executable file. The help menu states that I should go under the 'File' drop down menu and select 'Make' to convert into an .exe format. However, the 'Make' selection is not present under the 'File' drop down menu. How can I make a project into an executable file??

Does Making A Class NotInheritable In .NET Offer The Same (potential) Compiler Optimizations As Sealed In C#?

Jan 11, 2010

I've read that making a class sealed in C# is advisable in high-performance scenarios because it frees the compiler to make certain optimizations (e.g., inlining property getters) that it wouldn't be able to make otherwise. Is the same true for NotInheritable in VB.NET?

Making Program Generate An Exe

Nov 14, 2008

I have an exe with certain variables that need to be changed for each "make" of the program so that each one is customised, but what I need is to create a program that can edit these variables and generate a new exe, or something that can take the source files from my exe and edit the variables then recompile it. Now I don't want to hear "why not just do them by hand", if I wanted that I wouldn't be asking how to do this, I just need this because I need to create 1000's of these custom exes, and I figured that if I could make a program that can do this (edit the variables and compile new exe) then that would make it easy on me since the variables I need to change go in an order from 1 - 1000. I also need it to work on a regular pc not one with all the special VB plugins and stuff, it needs to be able to work on a fresh install of win xp.

Deployment :: Can An Executable Program Create An Executable File

May 17, 2012

I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.

So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time.How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

VB Compiler Is Unable To Recover From The Error: System Error &Hc0000005& (VB Internal Compiler Error)

Jul 1, 2011

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)

However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.

I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.

Is The C# Compiler Smarter Than The .NET Compiler

Feb 9, 2012

If I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.

In c#
int i = 42;

results in the following IL code

IL_0000: ret

whereas in VB

Dim i As Integer = 42

it is

IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0

Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated.Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?

Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.

Designing Software - Making A MPC Sampler - Drum Machine - Making A Sound Directory ?

May 16, 2012

I'm a huge music person (got my own lil record thing going) but I'm wanting to design a program that would make music in my way. I have a decent amount of background knowlege of Visual Basic and Java I'm just wondering how could I execute this whole project. The Project is making a MPC Sampler. MPC is a drum machine; a machine with buttons that once you press it that it will play a sound from a drum (ex: snare, kick, tom, ect.) . So I would want to make some pads on my program that each have their own sound. Total of 16 pads. Which the design wouldn't be hard to make nor would the functionality of it having the play back sound (in my opinoin it wouldn't be hard atleast). But the thing is I wanna map out these pads to number keys on the number pad or keyboard. I'm not so sure how to do that. But that's all the easy stuff...

Also finding information is making a sound directory. What I mean by this is that I want to make a User Interface that will open up a file directory of sounds and the user can select what "kick" or "snare" sound he may want for the kick or snare pad. I don't know how to do that or even know what to search; neverless I don't know if this whole project idea is a good idea for Visual Basic or another programing language.

Also LATER ON I am wanting to add a record and export function that alows users to..well...record and export their beat or instrumental ha. That doesn't seem too too complex (mainly due to the fact that all it needs to do is record the users key strokes and then show them and play the sounds, but obviously it would get more complex than that.)

Here is an image of one of many MPCs but one with a directory - [URL]

How To Create A Compiler

Sep 28, 2009

how to create my own programming language,I can create a compiler for a language like vb.net itself. Essentially, the user inputs code, they get a .exe. By NO MEANS do I want to write my own language, as it seems other compiler related questions on here have asked. I also do not want to use the vb.net compiler itself, nor do I wish to duplicate the IDE.

The exact purpose of what I wish to do is rather hard to explain, but all I need is a nudge in the right direction for writing a compiler (from scratch if possible) which can simply take input and create a .exe. I have opened .exe files as plain text before (my own programs) to see if I could derive some meaning from what I assumed would be human readable text, yet I was obviously sorely disappointed to see the random ascii, though it is understandable why this is all I found.

I know that a .exe file is simply lines of code, being parsed by the computer it is on, but my question here really boils down to this: What code makes up a .exe? How could I go about making one in a plain text editor if I wanted to? (No, I do not want to do that, but if I understand the process my goals will be much easier to achieve.) What makes an executable file an executable file? Where does the logic of the code fit in?

This is intended to be a programming question as opposed to a computer question, which is why I did not post it on SuperUser. I know plenty of information about the System.IO namespace, so I know how to create a file and write to it, I simply do not know what exactly I would be placing inside this file to get it to work as an executable file.

Will The Compiler Optimize This

Mar 8, 2012

Consider this

bar = 1
foo = <1 or 2, depending on previous code>
if foo=1
while bar <= 5

[code].....

What I want to know is, is the compiler smart enough to optimize away the (apparently) repeated tests for "foo = 1" since foo is not modified in the body of the loop?If so, I might use the second construct since it is semantically equivalent (I think!), takes less code and reduces indentation levels.

.net - Why Does The Compiler Think This Is An Object Instead Of A DataRow

Aug 2, 2010

I'm using a LINQ query to translate data inside a DataTable object to be a simple IEnumerable of a custom POCO object.

My LINQ query is:

Dim dtMessages As DataTable
'...dtMessages is instantiated ByRef in a helper data access routine... '
Dim qry = From dr As DataRow In dtMessages.Rows

[code]....

However, the compiler is throwing a warning message under dr As DataRow with the message: Option Strict On disallows implicit conversions from 'Object' to 'System.Data.DataRow'.Why am I getting this error and what do I need to do to fix it? I would have thought that dtMessages.Rows returned a collection of type DataRow. Is this not correct?
