Migrating SqlServer (2008) Named Instances To Schemas?

Mar 11, 2011

I currently have a sofware with 80 customers.All share the same database structure, when data are differents.We got 5 database for each customer.Today, we have named instances, so the program is accessing to Bdd with something like :

Connect to 127.0.0.1/CUSTOMER1
select * from base1..table1

Now, we need to change, we got many instances.The idea is to have unique SQLSERVER instance, obviously i want to avoid changing the code (VB.NET).Just tried to play with schemas and users, seems to be an option, but since the schema is under the database, in can't make it works :

Connect to 127.0.0.1/GLOBAL_INSTANCE as specific user (customer1)
select * from base1..table1 -> error @ this point

When THIS works :

Connect to 127.0.0.1/GLOBAL_INSTANCE as specific user (customer1)
Use Base1
select * from base1..table1 / or select * from table1

I can easily script some user or schema creation, and change connection strings for all customers, but i can't really change All requests: huge number.

Generating User Instances In SQLServer Is Disabled

Apr 18, 2007

I am a beginning programmer and am tying to add a database to my visual basic 2005 express program. I have a nice working window but now a database needs to be attached. Following the add items and selecting the sqldatabase icon (and change the name) I get the following message: "Generating user instances in SQLServer is disabled. Use sp-configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances". I am trying for 2 days to find out what to do.

Aparently, all the solutions on the internet are for wizards but not for apprentences. I hope to become a computer wizzard but are far from it now. I scanned my computer for the file sp-configure but it does not exist. I tried sp_configure as a DOS command, checked all VB menu options to find etc. On the internet the language is out of my league and jumps too quickly.

On my development computer, SQL Server Express, SQL Server 2005 (both named instances) and SQL Server 2008 (default) are all running but express and 2005 don't appear in the combobox dropdown list.

Creating XML Schemas In .Net?

Apr 14, 2010

I've been trying to create an XML schema that describes the types used in an XML document I've created but have been having some trouble understanding what exactly I need to do. I'm using VB.Net and would much prefer to do things the right way (i.e by using the appropriate api calls) but I can't figure out which ones to use. Granted, I'm new to XML Schemas but I thought it would be as easy as creating the initial XML document for which I need the schema (which was a breeze).

Migrating VB6 To 2010 Or 2008?

May 20, 2010

I have to migrate a software from VB6 to a most modern technology.

1) Does has Visual Basic 2010 Migration Wizard to migrate VB6? I have downloaded the free trial of VB 2010 and I can't open a VB6 proyect

2) It is a good idea use VB2010 or is better go with VB2008?

I have to say that I will learn the language also, my guts says that I should code again everything using VB2010 ( so I am learning the lastest language) although I am not sure?

C# - Cannot Find Stored Procedure (using Schemas)?

Nov 29, 2011

In my database I have three schemas:

Schema1
Schema2
Schema3

Objects are separated out into each of these schemas depending on that objects function, which I thought was a good way of doing things. This in turn leaves no objects in dbo except the default objects from the model database which I have not modified.When I try to reference a stored procedure from code, whilst specifying its a stored procedure, I receive a Stored Procedure Not Found error. When I change the CommandType back to text, the code then works.

I don't have the code to had, but it looks something like this (written off the top of my head, so dont expect it to compile):

VS 2008 - Sqlserver Database - Tables And Stuff Just Vanish ?

Jul 1, 2009

I seem to have a major problem. when I add a typed dataset to my project and go back to my sql server and click on the databse I use it doesn't open. the tables and stuff just vanish. using the wizard, it creates this connectionstring:

<add name="Schenectady.My.MySettings.SISQL2ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataSISQL3.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>

It connects fine. but after I try opening it in sql server i get an error. It doesnt let me restore or anything. i tried restarting my pc incase the db was locked but it is still gone. now my app cant connect. Just for clarity, is user instance supposed to be set to true. and what is the purpose of it. also when the wizard asks to make a copy of the file that will be copied accross each time I run my project I select No.

Inserting To SQLServer Express 2005 Using Visual Studio 2008 VB2008?

Oct 15, 2010

I am new to SQLSever, Visual Studio and Visual Basic. I have read through Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 by Michael Halvorson and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 by Lars Powers and Mike Snell. These books mention the ability to use SQLServer as the DB but I am not clear on the process. I am not knew to programming an have had training in OO programming but have never done any OO programing professionally. So, you can assume I am new to OO programing.

I have created an SQL DB using the Server Explorer in VS, and created a Windows form with Labels, TextBoxes, and ComboBoxes for the application's user to add the demographic information about a new employee. I created a new query with the Query builder that is in the Employee table of the DB which contains all the field for the record for inserting. I have a few questions to understand the process for inserting into the DB.

The DB fields are defined as numeric(6, 0), nurmeric(5, 2), and char(30) for some examples.

The maxlength on the form windows are in sync with the maxlength of the DB for the various fields.

1. What is the process to update the DB with the fields from the form?

2. Do I need to declare and set the results from the form first? If so, how do I call the function (query) that I created in the Employee table.

3. The emp_num I would like to be a dynamically incrementing number starting from 1000. How do I make this a dynamic? The emp_num is also the key on the Employee table.

4. I have a decimal field on the Employee table to hold emp_rate (pay rate). Does the user enter the decimal on the Form or is this resolved by SQL to take the 7 numbers and insert the decimal beause of the table's field definition?

My problem is for me to use a maximum of 4 ports all together transferring data from the client(s) to the server(s) I will need 4 clients and 4 servers. I need to open 4 instances of 4 clients. I was going to put a client in a form and then when the client is running it creates 4 instances of that form but than there would be too much confusion going on. I think there my be a way to use Classes instead of forms.

VS 2008 X86, X64, PID, Multiple Instances?

Feb 6, 2010

My ultimate goal is to get a list of PIDs and have a user select 1 of them.For example: the process image name is program.exe. The application name varies for each instance the program.exe is run, and therefor each application name has its own PID associated with it. By application name I mean the Task name under the Applications tab of Windows Task Manager. Another issue I face is that some systems run x64, so the name is no longer program.exe but program.exe*32

So my issue is, how do I search for program.exe, or on x64 platforms program.exe*32, and if there are multiple instances of program.exe/program.exe*32 running, how can I get a list of PIDs for each and associated them with the application name as the Task name under the Applications tab of Windows Task Manager.that might sound a bit confusing! So if it is, please let me know and I will try to explain more. Any reference guides or example code would be greatly appriciated as I have only used the "System.Diagnostics" but once.

VS 2008 - Creating Instances Of Controls On Form?

Sep 14, 2010

Is it possible to create instances of controls on a form ? Of course I mean visually , not just by code. After all, these languages define themselves as "Visual" so they should provide that possibility. It is important for the instances to be visible during design time because otherwise we could only guess where those controls might "land". Nevertheless , I have the feeling this is not possible in VB .NET but still I thought I should ask first ...

VS 2008 Multithreading Or Creating Project Instances

Feb 15, 2011

I have been trying to create good multithreading programs and it is not working well considering the use of global variables, local variables etc and thread safe controls. I have not found a good way of doing it since it seemed to be not as efficient as just running it on a single thread.

The program accesses facebook and twitter api, parses etc. and I am wondering if I can just create new tasks and map the program project file and fire new instances of the project. Someone this using the taskfactory in 2010 but I thought this was just the same as the threadpool. on this: create windows services and set them to run on task scheduler??

VS 2008 Opening Up New Form Instances With Different Datasets?

Mar 24, 2009

Im fetching data from an access db, filtered by date and an ID. The data is then charted on a form (form1).

I want to be able to "duplicate" the form so that the data that is shown on form1 is shown on a different form. That forms data is not supposed to change when I change the data on the first form.

So far Ive put som code in a contextmenustrip that opens another form1, but the chart is not showing on that form at all.

I'm thinking that I'm going about this the wrong way so I thought I'd ask you guys what you think I should do?

A little info: When Form1 opens up, it loops through selected dates in a listbox, querying each date. This takes a little time, so I decided to put the data in a dataset on form_load, and then do the drawing from the dataset on form_paint, thus not having to query the database each time the form needs repainting. why the second (or third, fourth etc) form1 doesnt display the chart?

I will give an example of my subroutine.Note: Because of the nature of my program, I am not allowed to take any code out of the work zone and so I will be summarizing what I am doing rather than showing the actual code.

dim videoForm as new form
videoForm.size = New Drawing.Size

When my program loads it will load a different form(frmSelect) and if I manually load a different form(frmRetests) I can put frmSelect on top of frmRetests and bring one another to the front if it's clicked on(without using the bringtofront method)However as soon as I load a single instance of frmLine1t5 I immediately can no longer bring ANY form loaded into the MDI parent(before or after frmLine1t5 has loaded) to the front. I can only bring them to print IF I use .bringtofront method
