I have some variable that when divided I get this symbol: -1.#IND when you look at the variable in debug. This only happens when I put the equation in the Dim statement.

I don't have a problem. Why when I put the equation up in the declaration area it sets it to -1.#IND (I assume this is infinite or NAN or some such). I'm curious as this is the only time I've had difficulty with this.
I put this mathematical formula in VB 2008 Express Form and I have the result show in TextBox and every thing is good so far and my question is if I have a table of numbers for example if the answer in the TextBox is 0.00098 and my table show :
0.0001 to 0.00100 = 7
0.00101 to 0.002 = 8
0.00201 to 0.003 = 9
Etc

I'm very new to programming with Visual Studio(just a few weeks). I've read through a beginner's book and I've started to write my first little programs to get used to coding and to improve my skills. One of the first programs I had created was a simple currency converter. I've created a list box and a combo box with a number of different currencies in them and I want to know if there is an easy way to attach a value to each of these selections. For example, if someone selects British Pound in the list box and Indian Rupee in the combo box, I want to be able to have the British Pound be worth 1.67(versus the dollar) and the Rupee to be 25.00(versus the dollar) for example so that I can create a simple function that will change pounds to dollars and then to Rupees so that I can do this calculation with a multitude of currencies. I'm trying to write a LINQ query (Linq to SQL) that will contain a multiple number of conditions in the where statement separated by an OR or an AND. We don't know how many conditions are going to be in the query until runtime. This is for a search filter control, where the user can select multiple criteria to filter by.

OR table.col = 7

Before I would just construct the SQL query as a string while looping over all conditions. However, it seems like there should be a nice way of doing this in LINQ. I have tried looking using expression trees, but they seem a bit over my head for the moment. Another idea was to execute a lambda function inside the where statement, like so:

i have to convert a visual basic 6 program to the visual basic 2008. i used the wizard that is provided to upgrade but that just doesn't work. It comes up with many errors. most of them are End of statement expected and Number of indexes exceeds the number of dimensions of the indexed array. I really don't know what to do with them and i have to fix them in order for it to run.

Notice the fields prodno1 and prodno2 in the table structure.. this is part of a number of sql statements i need to run and put inside a loop. my problem is i want to automatically use this same code such that on the next loop, this sql statement is going to be:

- the table name is now r3 from r2 in the first SQL statement
- there are now prodno1, prodno2 and prodno3 instead of just prodno1 and prodno2
- in the WHERE clause, the p.prodNo becomes p.prodNo2
And so on and so forth.. so for the 3rd loop
- there's going to be r4
- there's going to be prodno4
- in the WHERE clause i will use p.prodNo3

I have a decent understanding of the logic, the content. I'm working on a puzzle and I'd like to write a short program. I'm looking to fill in the following variables: AB.CDE FG.HIJ (they're part of coordinates, and the puzzle is part of a geocache)
The puzzle asks you to determine which numbers correspond to certain colors, like this:

I need to define A-J as >= 0 and <=9. I also need to say that each color is >= 0 and <=9, but that no color can be equal to another color (purple ≠yellow, orange, etc). some number combinations won't work. Purple and yellow can't be 2 and 5 respectively, because that'd produce a negative number. I'm guessing that there will be more than one possible result. So how do I create an equation that calculates this.
I would like to read a user's input equation or expression as a string (such as "y=5*(x+6)" or "cos(3)^2") and have the program evaluate it mathematically. Does .Net have any classes that could do this? Obviously, the compiler can already take a programmer's coded equation and evaluate it. Of course this is a different matter, but is there not a way to harness that same power with runtime user-created equations? Serialization or anything?
The other option (I guess) would be to create my own equation-generator - breaking an equation down into a binary tree of the numerical values and the operations I suppose. Aside from being a nontrivial task, my program needs optimal performance as these equations are in large loops. At the very least, this would add several conditional evaluations to each equation run - dunno if that adds up.
The project is "kWh counter", that is, a simple program that calculates the power usage.The incoming numbers are the Power of the appliance (lightbulb) and the voltage (230/120).The formula is W=P*t that is multiplication of the power and the time it is used.I thought to connect it with a timer and the passing secconds multyply with the power, and, write the ussage on a label.This would be something like a simple digital power counter.Note that the voltage is not necesary.I am from europe where the standards are 230V.
