Im new to the forum so don't blame me if I posted this in wrong catagory :P , this forum helped me out plenty of times so I tought let me ask for help with a big problem. Ok this is the matter:I am working in visual basic 2008 on a program that should search thro a log file (what logs a chat) for specific words , than warn me if some one said that and display his name seperated in a textbox.What have I done is, that I made the code to open the .txt log file in a RichTextBox , I got a timer that checks every few if richtextbox1.text.contains(TextBox1.Text) so if it contains the words what I am searching and if the statement is true than it does beep(). K that is quite simple , for now the problem is to take the poster's name out of that log file! Here is how such a log file looks like:

View 2 RepliesI have been trying to find a method to adjust the height of a richtextbox (don't want scrollbars) according to the rtf content that I read into it from a database. Generally, the content will not be more than 10-15 lines of formatted text. But the richtextbox needs to adjust its height everytime new content is read into it or the form is resized. I have tried iterating thru the text and locating vbcrlf and then multiplying it with a standard height value. But there are problems if a line is too long and doesn't have the vbcrlf before the control's width runs out and the control starts scrolling.
Even with wordwrap on, there won't be any vbcrlf and the actual line count fails. Secondly, I would also like to display graphics withtime in this control. Hence I need a method that will actually somehow measure the twips and all and give me a close to precise height everytime new content is read into the control or the form is resized.
I'm not new to VB, but new to .net and hence i'm not fully aware of the latest additions.
How can i Tab the content of my RichTextbox. When i use VBTAB, it does not Tab all my output to the correct places. I am using code like... the Makelen is just a function i created to see if i can make all the fields the same len...it does NOT work

I have a WPF RichTextBox which contain in its FlowDocument both text and images. I need to iterate through the text's words (those which builds the text which the user see on the screen) and change their content and formatting. For instance, change the word "room" to the word "home", applying to the last a red color.
I need to change words whether they are formatted or unformatted.For instance, if a word is in Italic, colored, or just regular black text, it makes no difference for me.Each word will be replaced with one which have about identical length, so I don't want that this operation will effect the general page layout. All images and other objects should remain at their positions.It is preferred that the process of this operation will not be visible to the user. Only its result should be visible (i.e, no visible selections of text).If this operation can be done either directly on the FlowDocumet or with properties/methods of the RichTextBox, the simple one is preferred (but exmaples for both will be ideal).
Does anyone have any suggestions how I might store the contents of a RichTextBox that also includes images to a MSSQL 2005 database?I suppose a possible answer to this would be to convert the entire content of the RichTextBox to a Byte Array, and then insert the array as a varbinary(max) datatype.But how do I convert the content ?

One of the colums I have in my datagrid is "Status" the table adapter sql statment selects certain items based on whether there open or closed e.g "where = Open ". I want to remove this row entirely and instead of displaying open or closed for status column, display the open/ closed results in colour on the datagrid. Im really not sure how to go about this whether i need to do it in the table adapter or some sort of property. I presume i need to write a sql statement and selct the identity of the row where x= open etc , is there a way of assigning a colour in sql statement so it displays on my vb form ?

I could use the WriteXml method of the DataSet to do it, but the database tables are really huge and I can't add all those tables in the DataSet at the same time or it may cause a problem because of the big amount of memory used. Then I decided to use the DataTable's WriteXml method and save table after table, but the the generated file only stores the information of the last DataTable.WriteXml's call. How can I preserve the previous XML data when adding all that information?

View 6 RepliesI have a textbox on a form that is set to allow dragdrop operations from txt files.Basically you drag a .txt file onto the txtbox, the content of the text file is displayed in the textbox.All is working fine, however after the textfile is displayed in the textbox, the text box text is for some reason is highlighted.I don't want the text to be highlighted (or selected) after it's being displayed on the textbox.Second issue, after I close the file that I dragged, for some reason even if I didn't make any changes to the file, it is acting as if the file has changed.In another words, if I open a text file using my MenuItem Open item, and if I do not change the file, If I close the file it's fine it closes.However, if I close a file that I draged into the text box and then close the file without changing anything in it, the stringcompare function is telling me that the file has changed... I can't understand why.

I have a custom file format I save in binary data. When I view it, I get the default windows icon because it has no program to associate it with. How do I assign an icon to a file? Or, how to I tell windows what the default icon for my format is?

IF I PUT MSGBOX " " & GetCurrentUser & "" I return the current user with no problem and if I hardcode the user name the shell function works with no problem however I am uncertain of the proper syntax to code the username into the file path ...After tinkering with it for half an hour I figured I should just ask someone who codes in VB !
