I have been trying to make a program to solve for the x intercepts of a quadratic formula and have gotten this far. Whenever i debug, it says "A first chance exception of type 'System.OverflowException'" It seems to be with the code shown in bold.

I'm working on a quadratic formula program and when I enter 1 as A, 2 as B, and 1 as A (X should end up being -1), it returns "NaN" in both text boxes.

This piece of C# code does not produce any overflow exception.wordsize is a constant equal to 32.the x and y can be very big at the computation time. So big that long or decimal even cant hold. But C# handles the problem even the value of the variables exceeds its limits.The computation gives thr right result.(I dont know how it does it)

Now I know I can use a long, and mask the value with &HFFFF, and I know I can add exception handling to the code. but remember, this is an emulator and more code = less performance.
I have the following code for finding factorials:

It usually results in an overflow. It only works if I start with something small like 4. I have to work with starting numbers such as 30-60. I thought changing the value type to LONG would prevent this problem. This is VB.net just for reference.
I have created a console application to run through the db (about 22K )records and update some values nightly. I've added an email to myself on any errors. When running the task I get about 500 emails saying:
"Overflow" (which is what's returned by : exception.Message)
What does it mean? Is it running through the db too fast?

This is my code for solving the quadratic equation..you input an a,b and c value and it finds the roots but i dont know how to graph it.
i cant seem to figure out where i am going wrong with this. im new to programming and havent really ran into many problems yet but this one has me baffled. i need to write a program to compute the roots of a quadratic i have my code and i am not getting any errors problem is i must check that the a value is nonzero so when i set my if block and use "if a = 0" and then display message it seems that it doesnt pass the values on to the else when a does not = 0.

I highly doubt that that the integer that is being parsed back is greater than, either of those numbers listed above. I've tried using Int64, and even removing the << operator, but it's still throwing this exception.
I need to make some big multiplications for cryptographic reasons in vb.net and overflow the variable as C,C++ and C# does. I have disabled the check of overflow at the vb.net project but when i an doing those multiplications i get as a result 1.#INF

I am making a program that reads files (exe and dll) and compares them byte for byte and then save the diffrences.when i read the file it crashes. when the binary reader reaches position 3 (RAW offset 0x03) it crashes with the sentence: Arithmic operation resulted in an overflow. I can't prevent the table from expanding beyond the normal row height to stack text in a cell. It wraps text if strings are too long. I have tried everything and nothing is working. I have tried using overflow:hidden + height; i have tried text overflow ellipsis?

I'm writing this program in Visual Basic .NET to organize different fields of data, and I'm using profile slots through application settings to store the data for users. But, I ran into a stack overflow error in my SlotSelect.vb class. My best plausible guess for why this happens is that I'm using the wrong kind of variable container in the below sauce code, but my dilemma is that I don't know what specifically is going wrong.The code that the vshost is saying is the cause for the overflow was written from some code that I looked up on MSDN and other places for referring to objects in other classes, and I tried using other variants of it to see if it was any different. So far, nothing has worked, and it doesn't stop the error while compiling, much less in the code markup--it only catches it when it starts the application in debug after it finishes building
View 7 Repliesi finished a project ive been working on for weeks or well i thought i had finished it.. in VS debug environment it runs fine doing its logics for hours without a problem but after publishing it as a standalone it starts throwing errors pretty soon. Took another look at whats going on in VS debug and the only thing that stands out is "A first chance exception of type 'System.OverflowException' occured.." that pops up every now and then so i think this is whats crashing my program outside vs. This poses 2 problems a) the code is around 2k lines/3 classes and heavily multithreaded and i have no clue where exactly this error gets generated, b) from my previous encounters with first chance exceptions they seem like more "possibility for error" instead of an actual error itself and very hard to track down
