I have a combobox which contains a sample of names selected from a table.Currently the default name displayed in the box is the 1st name found in the table. What I would like to do is display the name of the person who is doing the selection as the default. The name is stored in a public variable 'PubName' and I do not want the user to be able to type into the combobox themselves.Is this possible?

but value contains an empty string I confes to being a VB n00b, less than a week, in fact, but I can't see what's wrong there. The file exists, it contains a section called "Config" which has an entry called "UserName" with a value - but even if not, wouldn't value take the default?
Edit: It's not returning an empty string - it's returning whatever I initialize value to before calling GetPrivateProfileString().
Which is to say that if I Dim value As String = "xxx" then it stil contains "xxx" after the call and not the default value.

View 5 RepliesI have a vb.net application, and I have a combobox which should contains a display member (text) and a value member (integer).the problem is:I want to set a default value to that combobox when the form load but I don't have a load event as I create the form and the combobox dynamically. i have used the combobox.selectedvalue =6 but it doesn't work.note: I can't use the selectedindex property because sometimes the value comes from a DB table primary key which is not the same as the combobox index.
the code:
Private Sub fill_combo(ByRef combo As ComboBox, ByVal nodes As HashMap)
Dim comboData = New BindingList(Of KeyValuePair(Of Integer, String))
nodes.movefirst()
Do While Not nodes.eof

I can not locate the correct method to make the first item in a combo box visible.
The app starts with an empty combo box. The user makes a radio box selection then clicks Go! (how original). The combo box is loaded via an LDAP query. All this is working just fine. The problem is the combo box still appears to the user to be empty. They must click the arrow to see the options.
How do I make the first option 'visible' after the users clicks Go!?
What are the steps to create a Default Value for a ComboBox? say you have two items "Enabled" and Disabled" and you want one of them to be the default value that is selected.

View 1 RepliesI programatically / runtime created combobox and bind it to a datasource but can not set its default value. Since I am using the Handler of SelectedValueChanged, this is causing the program to mis-fire. Here is the code I am using.
Public WithEvents T_combo as ComboBox
'dictionary holds data to use in other parts of program
Dim T_Dict As New Dictionary(Of String, String)

I got a combobox which is filled with values from datasource. By default the first value is chosen which is fine but I need to display "Choose country" as the default combobox text. The user then can choose from the drop down list.

View 3 RepliesI have a small section of a windows form that allows users to select when a customer should be called (i.e. day of the week, time and inbound or outbound)When the form is loaded I will extract the information using a dataset and bind to form controls. I want to use a combo box for call stautus - inbound or outbound - however wish to give the user the choice at runtime.My thoughts are I would need to set a static list (so the user could choose) and set the default or displayed value to the info the dataset has extracted.This code to select the index doesnt work when I am comparing the dataset result to the "Outbound" string even though I am using the ToString method.
Private Sub TestTelesalesForm_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Me.Telesales_DEV004016TableAdapter1.Fill(TelesalesDataset1.Telesales_DEV004016)
Me.comboCallStatus.Items.Add("Outbound")

View 17 RepliesI have an external (3rd party) EXE which I start from my app, which reads data from the user and creates a corresponding registry key with the information, then exits. I then need to read those registry values from my main application.
I start the app with:
Process.Start(My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.Temp & "GatherInfo.exe")
I need to read those registry values AFTER that EXE has quit - so I know they've been created. At the moment I'm just making my main app sleep after that process has been started:
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000)
And then checking for the reg values. I'm worried this won't work for different users however, as the speed of the computer will determine how long the process takes to start and exit.
My program opens an excel file with excel.application's .visible=false. If the code is running and I manually open any excel file the excel file being used by code will then open up as well (making the .visible=false useless). Then at the end I use the excel.application's .quit to make sure that instance of excel quits, but it will quit every open instance of excel (even ones not opened by that code).Is there any way around this? to make sure it does not appear when other files are opened, and to make sure it only closes that one instance of the excel application.
View 4 RepliesSo i am writing something for work, and i was roaming the internet to see how to do it in vb.net, but it seems to really not have many hits. vb.net doesnt recognize Declare and all information points to things that say Private Declare Function [info]What i was wanting to do is to check if a computer has a DSN card in system DSN's, if it has it use the information and connect, otherwise, quit the program.
Do you know where i can find how to do this? I just need to check for the existance, i dont need to make them.All of my search results, while seemingly useful, were not written for vb.net I want to get something up here specifically for vb.net so we can get more search hits. i find more information, i will post it, but it doesnt seem to be going too far in the vb.net department, as it is in .net
I'm trying to create an excel file and load headers into the first row and then save the file to the local computer for later use. All of that works fine, but for some reason the "EXCEL" process won't quit. I have read through the tutorial written by Mike R and I have even tried just copying and pasting the code from the tutorial into my project, but to no avail. I should also note that I have not yet tried the "Extreme Measures" listed in the post, though at this point I am tempted to.
Code:
Dim ExcelApp As Excel.Application
Dim ExcelWorkBook As Excel.Workbook

I have a SSIS package that runs every 5min.My package has an error routine in the onError event handler but I don't want it to get in there.So in fact, the package should just exit / close / kill itself without any warning or error.Preferably this should be initiated by the script task (vb.net 2008)
View 1 Replies I got a form, another form, another form, another form, etc.And I got a quit form (Msgbox is not pretty)So, there starts a problem.I have two quit forms now, so that the user can pick the best one.The problem is that I don't know how the user can pick it. I have a quit button in Form3. I want SettingsForm have one label that says "Use the new quit dialog:" and two RadioButtons (which it has.) The Yes Radiobutton = Uses the new form, the no button uses the old one.Settings save the selection for the next session, etc.
RadioButton2 = Yes
RadioButton1 = No
Label = Use the new quit dialog
ButtonQuit = The Quit Button
I have a tab control application, each tab loads a particular user control and each of those user controls will then add other user controls that are used amongst other the user controls. For example, I have an "ucQuotes" page and an "ucInventory" page, when the specific tab is selected, the "uc****" user control is loaded on that page, and in the case of "ucQuotes" and "ucInventory" they both use a control called "ucPartNumber"; a user control consisting of a combobox, textbox, and button. I have no issues reusing the shared user controls, in this case. My problem arises with my "ucQuickPrice" control, as it is always present at the bottom of the tab control form (separate from the tabcontrol, but on the same form), and it too uses ucPartnumber.
Here's my issue, as I type into the ucPartnumber combobox, the text I type does not appear in the combobox, it appears in the textbox of the ucPartnumber control that is being used on the tabcontrol page. There are no shared instances of ucPartNumber, nor do I have this issue between typing on one tab page and the text showing on the user control of another tab page.I tried just creating the ucPartNumber controls on the ucQuickPrice control, not adding a new instance of ucPartnumber on the .Load event, and the issue persists.
The combobox(s) in question are bound programmatically with about 40,000 items, ".datasource = dataset.tablename" not to a bindingsource. Autocomplete is set to none, I added code to utilize tool tips and the basic combobox filtering functionality. Is this a bug, or is there something I'm neglecting? I'm about 95% complete with this application, and this just happened today. I made the decision, to just reuse the ucPartNumber control on the ucQuickPrice control (originallly it's size and orientation would not fit, but I added some coding to detect what parent is adding ucPartNumber and to change its appearance accordingly). Before, I made this change, I did not have this problem. And, in trying to go back to how I had things set up before the change, the problem will not go away. if the whole control within a control verbage I used is a bit confusing, let me know and I'll try to better explain what is happening. At this point, I'm going to close and reopen vbexpress, as when I started this ordeal, vb started acting weird and wanted me to save all my work, it usually does this before locking up.
I had added the items
1
2
3 to the combobox.
Then I gave the "Select" to the text of the combobox.
How can I able to reset combobox to select the text("Select").
I had tried by giving -1 to the SelectedIndex. But it gives only Empty.
