I am downloading page data using the stream reader using readline.I want to concatenate each line into one long string for parsing The below line of code is not working: datajoined =dataline.Insert(datajoined.Length - 1, dataline.Length - 1)My inevitable goal here is to track stream data with a progress bar. But first I must learn to dload page data in chunks.

[Code] my problem is if i search the class node with the name attribute of value "IT MAJEL 03", the xml reader reads through the first class which is "IT MAJEL 04" and read all of its child nodes(which i think is very awkward. why continue reading to its child nodes if the class name you're looking does not even match). is there another way to actually jump the reader of the xml node to the next xml node of the same level?
I mean if I search the class named "IT MAJEL 03", the reader should jump to the next same level element it does not match the query. It should skip reading the "IT Majel 04" child nodes. what I want to achieve here is I want to save nanoseconds of computing.

Am I being dense here? StreamReader.ReadLine states that: A line is defined as a sequence of characters followed by a line feed (" "), a carriage return (" ") or a carriage return immediately followed by a line feed (" ")

I have a hardware which sends out packets containing 17 bytes to the comport in bursts of 3. the little test VB that I have written receives and displays the bytes in a line of 17 bytes long and works fine until it gets to around 170th packet, then it starts to mix up (looks like shifting the data left) the bytes shift mostly by one digit sometimes by two. then it will continue to give almost a packet correct and a packet shifted for about 50 packets. Then it will correct itself for a long while, but then the speed at which it receives drops. All the packets are sent 3 times, and before things go wrong (within the first 170 packets) the packet counter shows that it receives 3 packet each time but after the problem it goes to 2 packet per burst and then to one.
If i close my VB monitoring program say at packet 165 and immediately open it again, it wont go wrong for another 170 packets, this points the finger at VB. I have check my hardware, there is no problem with that. The program reads port - waits for 17 bytes - once 17 has been received it will go and buffer the packet in an array. In fact they are 2 arrays but printing fro either results in the same problem.I have tried whatever i could think of but to no avail, i am wondering if some kind of house keeping needs to be done to clear something... I am sorry the program is a bit messy but I have been making many changes to find out what the problem is - my code below:[code]

i am trying to write code to assign values from a line of a text file to variables in my program. the problem is that I don't need all the values written in the text file assigned to variables. So. Basically I want to know if there is a way to use "ReadLine" to access specific lines in a text file.

Im making a login system that encrypts and decrypts the username and password. My encryption code is:
Private Shared Function enc(ByVal targetString As String, ByVal maskvalue As String) As String
Dim Index As Integer = 0
Dim ReturnValue As String = ""
[code]....
The enc function works for both encrypting and decrypting (I've tested with a MsgBox alert. The problem I'm having is when the program loads, it reads the file and decrypts it. However, instead of properly working, it returns one character in the first textbox and nothingin the other without any error being thrown.

I have been struggling with my programming class from day one. I still can't seem to grasp the complete logic on how to write code. Anyhow, I have an assignment due that I am stuck on. Here is the assignment:
In this exercise, you code an application that displays a letter grade based on the average of three test scores. Open the Grade Solution (Grade Solution.sln) file, which is contained in the ClearlyVB Chapl8Grade Solution folder. Code the application, using a function to determine and return the letter grade. If the average is at least 90, the grade is A. If the average is at least 80 but less than 90, the grade is B.If the average is at least 70 but less than 80, the grade is C. Tf the average is at least
60 but less than 70, the grade is D. If the average is below 60, the grade is F.
You will be developing the code for the function on your own. Below the Public Class frmMain line, insert this function header:Private Function CalculateGrade(ByVal testScore1 As Decimal, ByVal testScore2 As Decimal, ByVal testscore3 As Decimal) As String
In the function, declare variables for the average score and the letter grade. Calculate the average, use IF/Elself statements to determine the letter grade, and return the letter grade. Create a subprocedure for the Click event for the btnDisplay button. It should call the CalculateGrade function with three arguments ( the three test scores from the text boxes), and display the returned value in the lblGrade box.

I am a vb newbie having some trouble with an assignment. A user enters a letter into a text box, and the output must make the letter uppercase and tell what position the letter is at in the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog."
Here is my
Private Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click
[CODE]...............
This is what comes out: "A first occurs in position -1". Everything comes out except the position is always displayed as -1.

For the most part, my program is working fine, but this procedure is given me issues when used
[URL] I've messed around quite a bit with it and I can't seem to get it to work.. it either freezes the program or spits out an error like:
>{"Index was outside the bounds of the array."}
> System.IndexOutOfRangeException
> Index was outside the bounds of the array.
If I change line 38 to something like (40) from (-1) the program will just hang and eventually an error will pop up because it hasn't responded.

I have a program that is hooked to an external device via rs232. I can send and receive messages to this device just fine using the ReadLine() method of the serial port. This allows me to send a command and wait for a response in a synchronous manner. However, when I start the program I need to check the status of the device. If the device is in a sleep state, off, or on, I send a command and get a response, however, if the machine is unplugged, I get nothing so my program will hang waiting for a response before continuing. I would like to abort the readline after 1 minute and display a message that the external device is not connected or having a problem, etc. and allow the program to load. The command I use to check the device is:
Do Until Mid(balanceStatus, 1,3) = "S S" 'This is the return command that the status is read
spBlance.Writeline ("S")
balanceStatus = spBalance.Readline 'This will cause the program to hang if the external device is unavailable[code]....
That readline is causing the program to hang. So I need a way to abort if it exceeds a certain time (around 1 minute). I was trying to use the DataReceived Event of the serial port, but I need to wait for a response before continuing and DataReceived fires on its own thread. If there is a way to abort the thread, I was thinking of doing a timer control.

I am looping through a text file and reading and then parsing each line.. then, inserting into a sql server. The problem is, I am getting every other line. Any thoughts? I read another post on here that is similar and it says that that person was calling the ReadLine twice... which makes sense. I just cannot spot where it is happening.

Retrieving strings from a serial port with ReadLine works fine as long as the line ends with a linefeed chr$(10).However if no more strings are available to be read, Do Loop or For Next hang up waiting for the linefeed which never occurs.I believe using chr$(0) in place of linefeed would still work with strings ending with a linefeed..Just that the linefeed would be output.I have the complete MSDN Library.

Quote:
Dim fileName As String = fileloc
Using reader As New System.IO.StreamReader(fileName)
While Not reader.ReadLine() Is Nothing

THe problem is it reads in every other line.I assume its because its reading line one in the 'while' then the next line being stored during the loop....

and am trying to get that label to work with every item of the combobox. I do not know what property or code of the combobox makes this work correctly, but so far only the first index of the data file gets recognized by the combobox. If I click the next item in the combobox while running the program, it goes to my error message.
