TRying To Replace One Specific Character Of String With New Character Entered By User
Feb 17, 2011I am writing a hangman type game and I am displaying the word to the user in a label as all *'s, but I cannot figure out how to have just one of the *'s changed in the label to the correct letter when the user inputs the correct letter into the text box and clicks the check letter button.Everything else in the program works perfectly, except for this part.[code]When I use the .Replace it changes all of the *'s to the correct selected letter.

Dec 12, 2011I am reading a csv file in VB.net and saving the line to a SQL database. At a later point in my code, the SQL line is retrieved in the application, and the Split function is used to get 'field' values. The Split is done taking comma as the separator. The application processes many other files (including excel), and the split function is used for all of them. The problem I am now facing is that one of the csv files I read, has a field value that starts with " followed by multiple values separated by a comma and ends with another ". The normal reading of the csv file results in each of those single field values is taken to be a separate value.
An example line is:
Elker,MissB,"Bus, Taxi, Train, Ferry, Parking, Toll",800253
Where there should only be separated to 4 columns, they get separated to 9 columns instead. What I want to do is replaced the commas after 'Bus' and until 'Toll' with a '?' instead. I have tried using Replace, including the overloaded one with starting position, but it ends up replacing ALL the commas in the line with '?'
Attempt 1:

strRetVal = Replace(vstrLine(intStartPos), ",", "?")

and intStartPos is the first instance of a comma after the "
It returns only the '?' and not the string with 1 comma replaced by '?'

It returns a string with all commas replaced with '?'

Apr 1, 2009Lets say I have a label with the text "_ _ _ _ _ ", some underscores. Now what if I want the program to locate the 3rd underscore and replace with something else. Is this possible? I was guessing by getting the character's position first and somehow there is a function that replaces characters by their position.

Mar 9, 2010I also have a function that returns ALL tiles on the map and they're X, Y position. How could I find out which one is closest to the position I specify? I can't figure out how to go about it. how to implement it with this. Heres a MADE UP example if what I'm trying to do:

May 14, 2012I have an XML file and I am loading it in Xmldocument. This document has a node with some child nodes like this

here somenode has some children where first and last children node names are same where as other nodes except the first and last node has some diffrent name ( identical to each other ). I am creating a function to insert a node at specific position, I am not sure about the criteria but may be in the mid.
how can I insert node in specific position. I am using XMLnode.appendChild method for insertion Do I need to rearrange/sort nodes after insertion. How can I determine what is structure and how should I find where the new node should be added according to current document structure.

Jul 11, 2011so in a program I'm working on in VB.NET I'm trying to make it so I can take in a list of strings (each on a different line). For each line I want to take in the line, and break it up into three parts. The first part goes from the beginning of the string to the first colon in the string, the second part goes from the first colon to the at symbol, and the last part goes from the at symbol to the end of the string.
For example, I'd take in a line of the series of lines: hello:world@yay
I'd want to break it into three separate strings of "hello", "world", and "yay".
How would I do such a thing in VB.NET?

Find And Replace Specific Lines In A Text File
Aug 4, 2011I have a program that will read a text file and put information from the text file into multiple text boxes. What I am trying to do now is be able to change the values in the textboxes and be able to write the specifc changes back to the text file. One way I though of doing that was using a while loop and copy the lines of the text file to another text file, then when it finds the line that has the specific change from the text box, make the change and continue writing the line until it reaches the end of the file. Then I was going to copy the file and overwrite the original, escientally making the change to the new file. Right now it will make the new file but will just make a blank text file. I think the problem is in the while loop statement but I am not sure. Here is the code below:

Jul 24, 2011I wonder if it is possible to find a specific row and specific columns in data base file (Access) . You see , I am using a DataGridView control to show only SOME of the columns (fields) of a table from an Access file . For example , lets say that in the DataGridView control I only show the following fields :Field1 , Field2 and Field3 .Now , when the user selects an entry in the DataGridView control , I want to insert the text from Field4 into a text box on the form .
The problem , however , is that I don't know how to get the specific row in the data base file and also I don't know how to get the text in column (field) Field4 of that row .One thing that might be important is that the index of the row in the data base file is not necessarily the same with the index of the current row in the DataGridView control . This is because in the DataGridView control the rows are order by the contents in the ID Field .ol .
