I am to search for a particular string in a text file, which I can do using a regular expression.Upon getting this string I am supposed to search for another one then, find a value corresponding to some time step and write it to an excel file.How do I indicate the position from which I want my reader to commence? Let's say my match.Index returns 100 000 as the location for the first string I was searching for. How do I then resume my new search at this point?
View 10 RepliesI have been learning VB for about 3 months now at college and decided to enhance my skills by making my own project at home. My project is basically a game where you have to guess if the next number will be higher or lower than the previous version and you can place bets on it. I have done all of this ok but I wanted to create a high score system so that you could save your score.I can manage to write out to a text file ok so that it looks like this
Highscores
Name
Score
[code]....
etc. But I am not sure on how to read in a specific line. So for example I want lblHighscore1.text to equal line 3 of the text document (as vb counts the first line as 0) So far all I have is this;
Dim objReader As IO.StreamReader = New IO.StreamReader("C:UsersKarlDesktopHighScore.t xt")
lblHighscore1.Text = (objReader.ReadLine)
How to read a string in another string where between Starting Index and first-encountered Ending IndexI have one giant file which contains info for each customers and they seperated the customers info with Starting and Ending Indexes and I need to get a specific customer info to display.
Dim oFile As New FileInfo(sFileName)
Dim sFileContent As String = oFile.OpenText().ReadToEnd()
Dim iStartIndex As Integer = sFileContent.IndexOf(roNotification.StartByte)

I'm reading a text file with StreamReader, line by line. If a condition is met, then I do an operation and then start reading the file again from the first line. I realize I could close and then re-open the file, but surely this would be very slow.
I could do this easily in VB6, but pulling my hair out trying to do this in vB.net. It seems that 'Seek' is the function to use, but it doesn't work.
I've seen other examples, where it works, but you must open it a different way -- with a file number.
Imports System.IO
Dim I as Integer
Dim LineText as String

I have a test.txt file that contains:
1/15/2011; somedescription ; Joe Blow ; $50
1/18/2011; somedescription ; John Doe ; $30
2/1/2011; somedescription; Joe Blow; $90
I want to be able to pull all rows of data associated with Joe Blow if a users selects Joe Blow from a combobox. In testing this out I added the code to a button
I'm trying to create a program that stores a users stats for their character (for something like an RPG). I know how to write more than one line in a text file, but I want to learn how to read and write text on specific lines of my file. I know that you can just read each new line individually in order using a StreamReader, such as
username.text = readLine.ReadLine()
userage.text = readline.ReadLine()
[Code]....
This is good for just displaying the stats and changing them from a constant interface, but I'm afraid that eventually I'll need to read/write specific lines, like reading the fourth line which might specify magic level, or writing a new money amount.
I am currently writing a Login Script, and I am having trouble making StreamReader read a specific line in a text file. This is what I have so far (not the entire script, just the reader lines):
Dim path As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData)
Dim file As String = (path + "LogDat.txt")
Dim sr As New IO.StreamReader(file)
Dim line1 As String = sr.ReadLine(1) '' Supposed to read line 1
Dim line4 As String = sr.ReadLine(4) '' Supposed to read line 4
Dim line9 As String = sr.ReadLine(9) '' Supposed to read line 9
What I am trying to do is I have a .dat file that I cannot read but can at the same time. What I mean is I know how to decipher it by hand (alas takes minutes per 6 parts and there are thousands.) I am trying to make an application that can read this and allow me to edit it from my computer. I can open this with a hex program such as hex editor neo. I am currently trying to get it so I can read the file and have it place corresponding parts in to text boxes that I can alter to suit my needs.
I am new to visual basic and know a tiny bit about C++ if you think I would be better off trying in C# I can try that as well I do know some since learning c++. There are 41 parts to each item listed in the file and each one would need to go in its own text box. In hex there are 348 blocks that need to be arranged in corresponding order. Also the beginning of the file has 6 block followed by a code for each item. I need to find a way to put all the correct code in the correct text box and have it make sense.
I also have a function that returns ALL tiles on the map and they're X, Y position. How could I find out which one is closest to the position I specify? I can't figure out how to go about it. how to implement it with this. Heres a MADE UP example if what I'm trying to do:
Dim MyPosition as New Position()
MyPosition.X = 400
MyPosition.Y = 400
Dim tList as New List(Of Tile) = MyMap.GetTiles
Now, I can already do the stuff above, but what I need to make is something like this:
tList.GetTileClosestToPosition(MyPosition)
I was wondering how I would replace a specific character at a specific position.[code]...
View 7 RepliesNormally CSV files I work with lookes like this : d,e,f,g,1,2,3,4,5 What I am trying to do now is importing a CSV file that contains a title field, HTML description field ect. so at the end the CSV file format looks like this:"Record Title",1,2,3,"HTML description, which contains "",, ect",1,2,3,4,5, I need to know how to work with the above CSV format, where all the strings are inclosed with "" and may contain commas, so I can't use the split function as is to split where it incounters a comma as it may be part of the HTML description or Title field.

View 2 RepliesI am trying to read in and eventually manipulate an 'XML-type' file. I have picked up a hobby called 'Geocaching', some people probably have heard of it, where you use gps coords to locate items placed by other people. Well, you can download the gps coors within data files from the website,'Geocaching.com' and these files are in a XML format.
There are a lot of programs out there that people offer, some are better than others, but I am not happy with the results. So, I am trying to see how I can use these files myself and create my own program to use the data in a way that I want to use it.
I have tried to use Linq, XMLdocument, XMLreader and probably a couple of others over the past week. I have had marginal sucess with each of these methods, but nothing great and I owe that to my lack of knowledge.
I eventually hope to add the data to a Access db that I am using and manipulate the info from the db.
I am attaching a sample of one of the downloaded files and if someone would have the patience to help me work my way through it, p.s. The file typically ends with '.gpx', but since its an xml and thats what the system recognizes, I added the extension in order to upload the sample file.
My program reads a 3rd party .txt file using OleDb and reads the file into a datatable. It's overall working fine except a user will occasionally have a problem reading a file. At this point.
Line that gets hung up
Try
Dim comm1 As New OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM " & safeFileName & " Where " & Status & " = '" & StatusClosed & "'", con)
Dim dasold As New OleDbDataAdapter(comm1)
dasold.Fill(dtsold)
AddColsold()
[Code] .....
It can not retrieve a date for one of the fields, then gives error and does not get dates for each records after the one it gets hung up on but the date is in the file. If I open the file in excel and play with the column sizing, for instance just autoformat column width then it read the date and will work fine. I have looked at the file in notepad and cant see anything wrong in particular on the record it gets hung up on. I have no control over the .txt file since it comes form a 3rd party.
I want to make a form, which downloads a textfile from the internet. I found this method on the Microsoft Website:
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile _
(..Adress Here.., ..Output here..)
this works for me
[Code]...
Application.StartupPath & "Data(the name & extension of each file)" I can change the file.txt with other links. But the file have to be in the Data folder.d.
I've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.
(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this
If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....
And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.

I'm reading a file into a buffer using the Space function. Then I'm using blowfish dll's to encrypt it, and want to write the encrypted data to a txt file. (I realize you can use .NET cryptography classes, but I need to use these old blowfish dll's for this project.) Anyway, when when I encrypt the data in the buffer, I can see all encrypted data, but when I write it out to a file, I get a few lines of encrypted data and the rest of plain text.

I'm trying to read a csv file with comma separated. Problem is inside the file, it has one column which original value already contains Comma. Here is the example
[Code]....
So, when I Split the string with Comma, it gave me problem. Actually total it has 6 columns. But because of internal comma, it gave me 7 columns. And this CSV format can't change so I must deal with this problem. And so here I come out with a solution (because of its too long, I looking for better idea and solutions from you guys ):

I have a form with a listbox. I'm adding items to the listbox through a file that I saved. When I open the file, I want each line/string in the file to go in as a separate item in the listbox. I've gotten it to work so far but only with 1 string. I need to loop the part where the file is being read to be able to add all the strings that are within the file to the listbox. How do I do this? So far, this is the code I have:

I have an XML file and I am loading it in Xmldocument. This document has a node with some child nodes like this
<xml here>
<somenode>
<child> </child>
<children></children>
[code]....
here somenode has some children where first and last children node names are same where as other nodes except the first and last node has some diffrent name ( identical to each other ). I am creating a function to insert a node at specific position, I am not sure about the criteria but may be in the mid.
how can I insert node in specific position. I am using XMLnode.appendChild method for insertion Do I need to rearrange/sort nodes after insertion. How can I determine what is structure and how should I find where the new node should be added according to current document structure.
I have tried with filestream but it also changed the strings that is in position

Dim testdata As String = "a"
fs.Write(Enc.GetBytes(testdata), 0, testdata.Length)

I am reading a csv file in VB.net and saving the line to a SQL database. At a later point in my code, the SQL line is retrieved in the application, and the Split function is used to get 'field' values. The Split is done taking comma as the separator. The application processes many other files (including excel), and the split function is used for all of them. The problem I am now facing is that one of the csv files I read, has a field value that starts with " followed by multiple values separated by a comma and ends with another ". The normal reading of the csv file results in each of those single field values is taken to be a separate value.
An example line is:
Elker,MissB,"Bus, Taxi, Train, Ferry, Parking, Toll",800253
Where there should only be separated to 4 columns, they get separated to 9 columns instead. What I want to do is replaced the commas after 'Bus' and until 'Toll' with a '?' instead. I have tried using Replace, including the overloaded one with starting position, but it ends up replacing ALL the commas in the line with '?'
Attempt 1:
If vstrLine(intStartPos) = "," Then
strRetVal = Replace(vstrLine(intStartPos), ",", "?")
end if
Where vstrLine is Elker,MissB,"Bus, Taxi, Train, Ferry, Parking, Toll",800253
and intStartPos is the first instance of a comma after the "
It returns only the '?' and not the string with 1 comma replaced by '?'
Attempt 2:
If vstrLine(intStartPos) = "," Then
strRetVal = Replace(vstrLine, ",", "?", intStartPos)
end if
It returns a string with all commas replaced with '?'
