IDE :: Get Executable Running?

Jan 13, 2011

Firstly I'm not a programmer and do not pretend to be one. I just enjoy killing some spare time I've been usining Visual Basic (started with VS2005 and now onto VS2010) to develop a program. Up until now I've been happy to plod along running the progam from the development environment. However, I recently was asked by an colleague if they could have a copy of the program to use. Therefore I opted to create an executable file for him to use. The problem is that whislt the executable file runs fine on my machine (Win 7) where VS2010 is installed, it does not deploy correctly on his machine (XP pro). Following is the message that I get:See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Running Executable Within Program?

Aug 5, 2009

I'm trying to run a program (mame.exe) within a vb program. Mame is a program that allows you to run old video games. The games are stored in rom files. If you want to run mame.exe from a dos prompt, the syntax is "c:/mame.exe [rom]". The [rom] is the particular game you are running. I'm trying to create a front end menu from which I can execute games.

I've tried:

Process.Start(
"c:/mamefiles/mame.exe [rom]")

and I get an error that says it can't find the file.

I tried

Process.Start(
"c:/mamefiles/mame.exe", "[rom]")

and it seems to start the program but immediately shuts down mame.I tried

Shell("c:/mamefiles/mame.exe [rom]")

and again it seems to start the program but immediately shuts down mame.

VB2005 32bit Program NOT Running On 64bit Systems

I developed a Visual Basic program in VS2005 that uses SQL2005 on a 32bit system, which runs perfectly on 32bit systems using Click Once deployment, but whenever I try to load or run same program on any 64bit system, it does not load or run. What do I need to do to make the program run on 64bit systems.

Check Creation Date Of Executable That Is Currently Running

Jun 9, 2009

I would like to implement into my program a version query of the executable and I figured the easiest way would be having a check on the date of the executable. So how can I check the creation date of the executable that is currently running (from the program itself that is)?In short - double click on .exe and it will tell the date of its creation

VS 2005 Running Fortran Executable Using 'Shell'

Apr 14, 2009

I have an old Fortran program that I've compiled to a windows executable. On opening this from an explorer window the executable runs fine, however on using Shell to run the program a traceback error occurs. Just to be sure I used Shell to open a batch file which runs cmd /K ...exe Why is it that on double-clicking the batch file it will run the executable correctly, however on calling it from my visual basic (very simple button) program the batch file opens the command prompt just fine but does not execute the whole Fortran code successfully? Incidentally I have found that the error occurs on a line to do with reading from a file; it can print to the command prompt etc. with no problems just not deal with the reading the external text file for some reason. By the way paths for files etc. are definitely correct. It makes no sense to me, but from a bit of research it may have something to do with correcting the read statements - at the moment they are just in the form: read(99,*)

Shell Command Launches An App Differently Than Running The Executable

Sep 1, 2009

I have a legacy vb6 application that uses a shell command to launch a newer .net application. It's a very simple command, just launches an app. Here's the problem. When I run the .net app through the shell command, it tries to connect to a database that is not referenced in it. If I double-click the .net executable, it runs just fine and connects the way it is supposed to. Normal, no problems. Only when I run it from the shell command do I have problems. I have checked everything I can think of and simply can not come up with a reason why the app would behave differently when launched from a shell command.

VB2005 Windows App On Citrix?

Oct 12, 2011

I developed a very simple little windows program in VB 2005 to be used on desktops here at HQ. It reads a table from an Oracle DB into an array, let's the user select a text file, and then uses that data and text file to create an Excel spreadsheet.

Now they want a remote user to have access to it. We use Citrix for our remote application access. There is no install, I just copy the code to the Citrix server so I didn't need to put terminal server in install mode. When I am on the Citrix server, the application runs well. When I access the application through Citrix, I get an Oracle error from the ODBC data manager: Data source name not found and no default driver specified.

Does anybody know what is going on? how to make it work?

Are there any papers related to Windows applications on Citrix server that can help?

Implanting A Windows Form Into Another Executable?

Oct 18, 2011

Easy simplification of companion programs I.E. chat programs, clipboard, etc. Also, you could have a transparent, noborder, location locked notification program on top of a fullscreen application. (: Get notices about email while playing MW2 or whatever. Is it possible to program something in VB to "implant" a windows form into an existing application? So say whenever I open my office program a windows form I made comes up in addition to the office program (without changing how the other app functions) and possibly independent of the office program (when one is closed the other remains).I have a project with a windows form, it's just a form with 2 text boxes, a label, a progress bar, a button, and a timer, we'll call this program A.Program B is a basic word processor program (word pad, works writer, etc). Program C is the implanting program.Programs A and C are visual basic applications. Program B is any given windows program.

When program C runs it takes a copy of program A and finds program B. It implants program A into program B and then quits. Then when program B launches, there is no difference in program B's functionality, but an extra windows form (program A) launches simultaneously to program B. When looking at the task manager the user sees one process, program B's process. Finally, if the user re-runs program C it finds program B again and removes program A. My actual question is can you give me some code examples or theory help for program C, the implant/remove program.

VS 2010 Program Crashes As Published Executable, Not As Program Running In Studio Or Express?

Jun 6, 2012

I wrote this VB program to be able to throw a device we developed into programming mode where we use an ATMEL Flip installer to upload new firmware. I can program one device after another running the application off of Visual Studio Express 2010 or Visual Studio 2010, but when I go to publish this file and run it on another machine, it becomes unstable and crashes after each upload. On those same computers if I run the raw unpackaged program under Visual Studio Express, the system does not crash, and I can program devices repeatedly.

Deployment :: Can An Executable Program Create An Executable File

May 17, 2012

I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.

So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time. How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

If I already know the PID, then I can retrieve the CreationDate (I assume which I can use to check for restarts? or is this the actual process creation/installation date) for each specific process, however if a restart occurs the PID will change and my script needs to know what the new PID is without me telling it!

Windows Script Host Object Model's Interop.IWshRuntimeLibrary.dll Referencing Same Directory As Executable

May 10, 2011

I have an application that creates desktop shortcuts. To do this I have to reference the Windows Script Host Object Model. When I add it as a reference, it always creates the DLL, Interop.IWshRuntimeLibrary.dll, in the objx86Debug directory, then references itself to it, rather than looking at wshom.ocx. Even if I add reference wshom.ocx it reverts to saving the file in the objx86Debug directory. The problem is if I move my application to another computer without that DLL being present, the program fails to run.

System.file.io In Windows App Running On Windows 7?

Jan 25, 2010

Just placed out first Windows 7 PC in to a production environment and noticed that system.file.io gives errors about file not existing when using mapped drives to a network server. I can access the file through Explorer on the PC. When I chnaged the path to UNC using the IP and drive name instead of the mapped drive letter all works fine. Strange thing is for a few days during the testing period the application ran on Win 7 using the mapped drives in the file.io path. Not sure why it stopped working or how it worked in the first place. Question is on Windows 7 it seems like it doesn't like mapped drives in system.file namespace. Is tis true or are there more steps I need to do in addition to this This works as is, but when I change \172....vol1 to r: it bails, hence the thinking Win 7 is stopping the access to mapped drives.

Using VB5 On A PC Running Windows XP?

Mar 17, 2010

I am using VB5 on a PC running Windows XP. I've read that in the future, Programs written with VB5 will be 'unsupported' on PC's running Windows 8. Does unsupported mean that Programs created with VB5 won't run on Windows 8 or that they will run but Microsoft won't offer any support for any problems?

I'm thinking of downloading Visual Basic Express 2008 and converting my VB5 Programs to VB.NET. Can I run VB5 and VB8 Express on the same PC without affecting my VB5 projects?

Generate Executable From An Executable?

Jul 24, 2011

I Actually want to provide a new service which requires creating executables on the fly from executables generated in vb.net. For example lets say I have a form with a textbox and in that textbox we pass an argument which is for example the serial of the product, then we have a button which once clicked will generate an executable on the fly which has also a textbox requiring that serial to run? That was only an example but the main thing is how to generate that exe on the fly.
