Selecting Results From DataSet?

I have a DataGridView bound to a DataSet. I only want a selection of columns displayed on the DataGridView rather than all. I then have a text box which I want to display a value (Version_no column) from the column not showing in the DataGridView. Is this possible?
Would it be better to have a hidden column on the DataGridView and use this value for the text box?

I have two Datagrids, One grid has all the customers garments on it with style number and contact length. The other grid has the users who have garment issued to them. the style number is in both grids. I need to loop through the users grid and say if the contract number is 1 from the first grid then the contract date on the second grid will be todays date + 365 days (year contract) I have looked at using a stored procedure and also a for each command but I am just getting stuck with it all. I created a new query in the dataset designer. There are now 2 queries there. The original one and the new one.I also added named parameters in the Where clause of the 2nd query.This is the query in the new one:

I am using a Strongly Typed Dataset as DAL. I want to return a single column from my table for that i wrote the code as
SELECT DISTINCT Floor
FROM Room
WHERE (Building = @Building)
But when i previewed the data, it shows me all the columns of the table with Null Value and the column with primary key has -1 value. This condition raise an Exception when i link this query to a ComboBox ..

I've only dealt with firing a single SQL statement at a SQLServer table and returning a single result... easy....
however....
is there a way to fire a dual sql command and load the results into respective tables within a dataset?.. I'm thinking something along these lines (this code of course does not work)

I do however have a slight background with VBA particularly with MS Access, so I am not completely lost.I am recreating my Access database application in VB.net.I created a new project and added an Access database through the wizard, which automatically created a dataset for the database. On one of my forms I have, esentially, a search form. What I want to happen is have a text box, and as I start typing display a search result from my customers table in the list box under it. So for example, I type "A" and all customer names that start with "A" are displayed in the list box.I continue typing with a "p" (full string is now "Ap"), then all customer names that start with "Ap" are displayed and so on...
I did search on my own first before posting this and found a few tips but cant really get it to work the way I want. This is what I have... I know I would put this code in the keypress event of my test box, but just until I get it working I attached it to a button to search. (I basically got this online and not even sure its the correct usage.

The item in red is where i get an error. it sucessfully builds and i open the find form enter a last name that I know is in the customers table, but I get the error "Cannot find Column ["whatever name i typed inthe text box"].So first of all is this the correct way of going about what I want to achieve?If so how can I get it to work?BTW the next step for the user would be to double click the customer in the list box they are searching for to open the customer Details form for that customer, so I would need an ID or Index attached to that item to be able to open that record in another form.

I have a form with a Listview. I have not manually added columns through the gui so I need to do this too.I have a stored procedure which returns two sets of data. One is titled url and the other occurrences in he procedure.I have bound the results to a dataset. I am having problems taking that dataset and putting the results in the listview. Here is the code I have:

It is not creating the column headers. It is not putting both results in the view. It is only putting the first column "url" It is not putting the next row on the next line, but placing it in the next column where the occurrences should be going. It is also not resizing the columns to match the data , but keeping at the size assigned (I assume) in the columns.add section.

I currently have an excel spreadsheet that has a macro that displays information from my sql server. Everything works fine with it. Im trying to embed that into my vb project though. Anyone know what the best route to go would be to do this. Should I try to convert the vba macro and display the results to a dataset?Or should I try to recreate the connection through VB to display the results? or is that sort of the same thing? Heres my issue, I am retrieving data from xml and populating a DataSet with the results into multiple DataTables but i have an issue where an item is repeated in my input data and it is causing it to exception because of the constraints imposed between these tables. how can i determine if a row exists prior to adding the DataRow and thus not include it in my DataTable?

I have a question regarding the dataset usage in Reporting Services. I have a stored procedure which returns multiple select statements (result tables), and I created a Dataset in Reporting Services 2005 with this stored procedure. The problem is that I can not reference the second or third result table, and I can only use the first select statement fields. Is this the limitation on Reporting Services Dataset or is there a way to use multiple table results in one dataset?

I have a form that allows users to select file and then it reads the contents, parses the data and then executes a sql insert statement to add it to a database. What I am having issues with is showing real-time results. Currently, I have the import operation take place on the import form within the OnLoad event. The problem with this is it only shows the final results instead of the results real-time. Is there anyway to do this without creating a seperate thread and delegates?

I have code running in the Datatable.ColumnChanging event in my dataset. This dataset underlies a form and conventional drag/drop controls are in place for data entry.when the event triggers and runs, I am running code in the form that checks the dataset.HasChanges property. It is showing False. But this is immediately after the ColumnChanging event has been triggered.Okay, I see by others posts and MSDN that .HasChanges will only be true after moving off the row with the changed column. I have also noted lots of discussion about the advanced binding property of DataSourceUpdate Mode, but that does not address this issue.I guess I can do this by checking the state of the row for the binding source. Just seems odd that the event behind the dataset can be triggered and that does not change the dataset.HasChanges property.

I have tried everything I can to get beyond this error which shows below as <<<<< error here. It is trying to fill a dataset from a data adapter. If I change the SELECT statement to just SELECT * FROM xTable I get the correct number of records in each table. But anytime I try with a more complex statement I get the error message shown below which indicates System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet dataSet. I've completely erased all data and entered a new set of test data so I know there is no problem with relationships. Each table has primary key which is foreign key in other table. I have multiple datasets that I would like to combine into one. There is a common ID field that can be associated to each row. Calling Merge on the dataset will add additional rows to the dataset, but I would like to combine the additional columns. There are too many fields to do this in one query and therefore would make it unmanageable. Each individual query would be able to handle ordering to ensure the data is placed in the correct row.
For Example lets say I have two queries resulting in two datasets:
SELECT ID, colA, colB
SELECT colC, colD
The resulting dataset would look like
ID colA colB colC colD
1 a b c d
2 e f g h

ok, I've finally got my test database issues sorted out, however now I need to actually modify my existing report to add the two new fields from my test database. I have made a copy of the report so that I am not modifying the original. I have deleted the two old fields and now want to add my two new fields in there. In the Field explorer window, I see an object called "dataset1" and when I expand it, it is using a view that includes fields from the table that I added my two new fields to.
The problem I see here is that I have gone in and modified the view to include these two new fields in my test database - but again, they are not showing up as selectable fields here. I am just assuming that "dataset1" is somehow pointing to the live database again and that I need to change the datasource location.In my solution explorer, I see an object called "dataset1.xsd" but the properties of that do not tell me much about where it is actually pointing to...

I have some concern about designing Datasets. I was told that it would be good to have a dataset for each table for maintenance purpose. Because frequent change in database tables is expected, having one dataset including every tables would be pain to make the corresponding change in the application.
Q. is it good approach to have a dataset for each table ( I would end up having 30~40 datasets for each db table using Stored procedure) ?
I have a separate project for commonly used datasets. each project include "dataset project" as a reference, and use it by including needed dataset into Forms, classes, etc.
Q. Does this approach makes the whole system to be slower? If I have a set of datasets as a separate project, it would be beneficial, since It will be easier to make a change (I only need to make modification in one place)

I am having difficulties with Filling a dataset. It seems to be automatically assigning a datatype to the column based off of the first field of data it finds in that column. The column sometimes contains an integer, but it may also contain letters and numbers. If the first field is an integer, it says the fields in the column that contain a letter are DBNull. I'd like for the entire dataset to be formatted as a string/text type since I do not know what the values will be that I'm importing 100% of the time. How do I tell the dataset to expect a certain datatype for all columns and rows i'm going to import?

What is the impact of creating variables using:

ds = GetActualData()
where GetActualData() also creates a New DataSet and returns it? Does the original empty DataSet that was 'New'ed just get left in the Heap?
What if this kind of code was in many places? Would that affect the ASP.NET process and cause it to recycle sooner?
