I am trying to develop an app that uses a .dll that was developed for 32 bit systems. I get no error in VB or the compile.
Under Debug section of Properties the Platform Drropdown only says "Active(Any CPU)" How do I add x86 to this dropdown?

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.
I've decided to go with a Windows Installer (Setup Project) in VS Prof, rather than ClickOnce,I've added this project to my main project, and have right clicked and selected 'View -> Launch Conditions', it requires the .netframework 3.5.21022...
But I've created the installer project for .NET 2.0 framework, is this going to stop someone from installing the project without .NET framework 3/3.5?EDIT: I've found under the properties of that installer project, that .NET framework 3.5 and Windows Installer 3.1 was selected as a prerequisite, unchecked those, and checked .NET Framework 2.0, however the version under the launch condition .NET Framework is still 3.5, it should be 2.0

I have a utility that is a simple exe that is not installed compiled with VS2005 and works well. But when I upgraded to VS2008 the utility can no longer locate files in the active system folder. I have UAC turned off and am logged in as the Administrator and it still can not locate a file that I can see in Windows Explorer. The file I am looking for is PakMgr.exe.

What it would do is take the serial number and send it to my server if the key was correct it would return a 0 if its wrong the return value would be a 1.The problem was that when the serial number was entered correctly my program would create a "fake file" for example vb.dll in the system.And on run time my program would check for that vb.dll if the file exist it would skip my trial program and run the app as a full version. Half year later i think creating a "fake file" and checking for it on start up is extremely wrong and that's not very good security.How can i check the difference between a full version and unregistered version?

View 2 RepliesI have a VS2010 solution (upgraded) that has two projects, an EXE and a DLL. In both the Target framework versions are 4.0. When one look at the references of the EXE project, one can see that the System.dll (and System.Core.dll and so for) references to the v4 version (the latest); however, in the DLL project the references points to the .Net Framework v2 version. Why is this happening? How can I make all my projects to point to the v4 libraries?

I've seen loads of programs that use an icon in the system tray to let you interact with a windows service that is running on your machine but I am curious as to how this works. As I understand it, unless a service marks itself as 'interactive' then it has no way to communicate with the user's desktop and doing so is discouraged by MS (and even causes an alternate desktop to appear temporarily in Server 2008 in some cases). So I want to try and avoid doing this but I cant think how else I would do it, and even if I marked my service as interactive I'm not too sure how I could actually get it to show a notification icon in the system tray.
I assume I would have to use Windows APIs, unless just using the windows forms NotifyIcon class would work. I considered just having the system tray icon in a totally separate application that just communicates with the service via named pipes or TCP etc but I'm pretty sure this isnt how other programs do it because with most of them if you just kill the process that the service is running in then the icon disappears so it must actually be directly running from the service.
I'm typing this up only to document it and possibly save others the three days of frustration and hell I had to go through. Because this unhanded exception was damned near untrappable (it happens on Form.Show(), but since my primary form was affected, I couldn't tell at the time), it's one I know I lost a lot of hair nailing down.
I have an office application. Standard fare utility program that grew to do lots of custom tricks for my place of business. Lots of database providers to pull data from various unconnected sources and crystal reports to make fancy reports from it all.
When I make a change or addition to it, it usually is only needed by one employee, so I only deploy the new version to one computer at a time. Recently, I had to reinstall the program to the whole company. Everything was going fine, until somebody who had a Windows XP machine tried to run it. It was giving a "clr20r3" "System.InvalidOperationException" on program boot. None of my Try-Catch blocks were catching it. Any Windows XP machine I installed it on was failing, and any Vista/Win7 machine had no issues at all.
I spent the next three days trying to catch what was causing it, pulling out references, reinstalling .NET. Searching for references to this error online was futile since System.InvalidOperationException is one of those ultra-generic errors that pop up for hundreds of oddball reasons.
Finally, by happenstance, I found the cause via a single, obscure post on TechArena by a poster with only that post to his name who decided to chime in with his two cents on someone else's System.InvalidOperationException problem.
About a month ago, I replaced the program icon with a new one. I made up a nice Icon, and compiled pre-sized versions of it into a proper .ICO file from 16x16 all the way up to 256x256. I replaced the program icon with it, the links to the shortcuts in the setup program, and the icon on the main form.
THAT was the bug. Because my .ICO file had sizes larger than 64x64, Windows XP couldn't handle it as a form icon! It works fine for the program icon and for the shortcuts, but the form icons MUST be 64x64 or smaller or the program will throw System.InvalidOperationException on Form.Show(). I didn't know this was the issue since this change was over a month old and I hadn't needed to upgrade a Windows XP machine in that time. Windows Vista and 7 can handle large icon files just fine!
Solution, I made a second, WinXP compliant icon just for the main form. Problem solved. My big icon is still used for my program and shortcuts, so they look great scaling to max size in Windows Vista/7 and XP no longer crashes with a cryptic error message.

We've tried, making a console app that opens the connection, connection runs fine, opens, displays a message and all is well there.Then we make a simple web form, put it in the directory of the program, just a button, opens the connection, try..catch, grabs error, same error.The console app was running under an Administrator, web site running under iwam.
