How can I make multiple instances of System.IO.Ports.SerialPort and declare them on the fly? I need to monitor multiple RS232 ports based on the EU's selection. EU will select ports e.g. 1,2,6,9,11 and rename them as necessary. Selections will then be stored in a settings file.I would like to declare these at runtime e.g
Com1 is renamed LabelPrinter
Dim comLabelPrinter As New System.IO.Ports.SerialPort
With comLabelPrinter
[code]....
Or if not, make multiple instances based on the number of ports selected and renamed. The declaration based on the rename would just make it easier to work with but can be committed?

For whatever odd reason, we have a legacy data recorder device that runs at 9600 baud. Except when it needs to transfer its recorded data to a PC, in which case it switches to 57600 baud.
The old VB6 code worked, although it had its own set of problems of course.
The routine is this: Do several COMMAND/RESPONSE routines to populate a list of available records, listed by timestamp, at 9600 baud. Once a timestamp or several are selected, display a file save dialog. At the moment that dialog is closed, send a command to the device to tell it "hey we're going to warp", sleep for 100ms, then set the baud rate property of the persistent COM1 connection to 57600, before beginning to process XMODEM data and do the progress bar dance.
The problem I'm having is that it doesn't appear that the data received is ever really kosher as far as the byte marshaling is concerned. Which makes me wonder just how well SerialPort is at dynamically changing bauds on the fly. The VB6 version used MSComm.
I've even attempted to just use MSComm through the compatibility layer but "CTL_E is not supported" which makes it sound like it's incapable of doing XMODEM. (?)

I`m fairly new to coding (2 weeks) and having some trouble with a timer application to control a greenhouse misting system. The problem arose after resolving the 65 second interval limitation for tmrPause, it appears the tmrPulse line is never reached as lblCycleStatus.Text doesnt display "Pulse" where it did before. I may have bitten off more than i can chew for a first project but i`d appreciate any pointers as to where i went wrong so i can learn from it.[code]

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

Currently we are working on a desktop applicaiton for which we used ClickOnce deployment.Recently we have released a PROD version as BETA to few selected users. So they have the PROD version installed in their system. Now those users need to test the QA version as well as part of forthcoming releases. How they can have the both versions installed in a single system through ClickOnce? While preparing deployables, is there any configuration to achieve that?I was planning to specify the differenet target directories for different versions. But as per the following discussion it seems there's no way the target directory can be specified url...

I have a VS2010 solution (upgraded) that has two projects, an EXE and a DLL. In both the Target framework versions are 4.0. When one look at the references of the EXE project, one can see that the System.dll (and System.Core.dll and so for) references to the v4 version (the latest); however, in the DLL project the references points to the .Net Framework v2 version. Why is this happening? How can I make all my projects to point to the v4 libraries?

I have a web site that I developed on Vista using Vb.net9. It makes a connection to Oracle. for the connection I use System.Data.OracleClient. It works fine on my machine, and our test server, but it does not work on the production server. We installed the Oracle Client 11 on the server. The error is System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7
We've tried, making a console app that opens the connection, connection runs fine, opens, displays a message and all is well there. Then we make a simple web form, put it in the directory of the program, just a button, opens the connection, try..catch, grabs error, same error. The console app was running under an Administrator, web site running under iwam. Is it possible that iwam has a different path?

I have an desktop application that references several dlls. All are targeted for .Net 3.5, x86. The applicaiton has been deployed for several years and was upgraded from visual studion 2008 to 2010 last year. I have made several changes to the app since then (as recently as last Thursday) with out any issues. Now, everything builds, but when I run the application, I get a type initialiazer error when one of the projects is loaded by the main application.
The error messsage is {"Could not load file or assembly 'System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.":"System.Drawing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"}.
There were no changes to this project since the last successfuly deployment last week, but today I am getting this error.

i was under the impression that using the System.Data.OracleClient namespace will allow me to deploy my application without having the client machine install any OracleClient software besides the .Net Framework 2.0 which if i'm not mistaken, contains the System.Data.OracleClient.dll.
but after creating a WinForm application and then publishing it thru ClickOnce , i found myself getting this error when running the application on the client machine. is this a normal behavior or did i do something wrong in the process?

I am using Microsoft Script Control, Version 1 on the application and it works fine on 32-Bit OS, but when i upgrade to 64-Bit OS it stops working and the only workaround is to build the application as x86 and the application will work fine on x64 OS but will run under 32 Bit process.
Now I am looking for alternative ActiveX or method to get my application work on native 64 Bit OS.
Is there a quick way of getting this fixed with minimum code change?

I've written a really simple launcher app for my team at work to use. However I wrote it in VB.net Express 2010 so its using .NET 4. I need it to be compatible with older machines that are using .NET 2 or maybe 2.5. I don't want to force upgrading to a higher .net if its not needed. And in some cases we work on old machines that can't be upgraded. My app is really simple and I'll post the code if needed. I am still a noob, my coding is ugly, and this is a quick and dirty tool.

I'm self-taught in VB.net, having been a VB6 developer for years. I'm now out of the field but I'm making a forms app that I need for my new business. I am using VB2008 Express, and I'll upgrade to later versions when necessary. Because I am self-taught I mostly work from examples and there's a lot about .NET I don't understand.
SITUATION:I've built a Usercontrol. (A custom datetimepicker which I call "datebox"). Then in my application project, I add it to the toolox, then plunk it on a form. It works great so I use it many times in my project, each time with a various properties. No problem so far.

Since my VB6 days I've longed for this feature. Every time you build a version it increments by one. On VS2005/2008 I've seen a few 3rd party programs or tips and tricks to get something similiar. I mean who wants to see a version no. like 1.0.1234.5678789 I used to use autobuildversion but can't seem to get it working on 2010. Has anyone managed to get the auto increment to work in any shape or form. I can't find the AssemblyInfo.vb file to edit so my program is stuck on 1.0.0.1 unless I manually increment it? I mean is it so hard to implement a built in auto increment function, or am I missing something?

I'm a novice who does not need installers yet and does not collaborate and I was hoping someone might be able to point me to a simple guide for incrementing versions and backing up the source files so that if I ever needed to I could get back to the previous versions. I just don't want to get into Visual Source Safe, Team Builder, or other big hairy version management software. Also my VB Express book only talks about using the ClickOnce solution which doesn't seem like it's a fit for my needs. I'm thinking I should be able to do a build manually incrementing the version and manually archiving files or folders to a certain location.

I need to know when I should change each point...Should my revision increment increase by one every sing time, even if i updated the build? The Minor? Major? Please Help-I want my application to be as professional as possible.
