VS 2010 Simple Version Control Guide?
Apr 10, 2012
I'm a novice who does not need installers yet and does not collaborate and I was hoping someone might be able to point me to a simple guide for incrementing versions and backing up the source files so that if I ever needed to I could get back to the previous versions. I just don't want to get into Visual Source Safe, Team Builder, or other big hairy version management software. Also my VB Express book only talks about using the ClickOnce solution which doesn't seem like it's a fit for my needs. I'm thinking I should be able to do a build manually incrementing the version and manually archiving files or folders to a certain location.

Since my VB6 days I've longed for this feature. Every time you build a version it increments by one. On VS2005/2008 I've seen a few 3rd party programs or tips and tricks to get something similiar. I mean who wants to see a version no. like 1.0.1234.5678789 I used to use autobuildversion but can't seem to get it working on 2010. Has anyone managed to get the auto increment to work in any shape or form. I can't find the AssemblyInfo.vb file to edit so my program is stuck on 1.0.0.1 unless I manually increment it? I mean is it so hard to implement a built in auto increment function, or am I missing something?

How they relate and differ from each? What are the best practices for version control? Is there a primer about publish online? Or a good book?
And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?
BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

I am using Microsoft Script Control, Version 1 on the application and it works fine on 32-Bit OS, but when i upgrade to 64-Bit OS it stops working and the only workaround is to build the application as x86 and the application will work fine on x64 OS but will run under 32 Bit process.
Now I am looking for alternative ActiveX or method to get my application work on native 64 Bit OS.
Is there a quick way of getting this fixed with minimum code change?

Does anyone have or has anyone come across an in depth guide to the .net app.config? I'm having significant issues trying to find a definitive guide to this area of .net.I can already handle custom configuration sections, from basic key/value pair settings right through to complete custom configuration handlers which I struggled to find information on, but I cannot find any documentation regarding basic native .NET functionality of the configuration file...for instance, with regards to BCL configuration. I've gone through the machine.config.comments and the config.xsd files and it has provided a little insight but not enough to fully grasp the full potential of the config file. I've also trawled through everything I can find on Safari and only managed to come up with a couple of useful tidbits that I wasn't previously aware of but it seems this area of .NET is extremely poorly documented and unless you have a very specific purpose in mind, it's useless trying to find information on it.

I'm attempting to make a program that will simply draw a guide (consisting of two perpendicular lines) on another program's window. I tried using a form with a transparency key and TopMost set to true, but then whenever the user inadvertently clicked the guide, it would un-focus the application. The only lead I could find was a suggestion to "Draw directly on the other application's window". I can't find anything that tells me how to do this, or if its even possible...
So I need to know one of three things:
1) Is it possible?
2) How do you do it? or
3) is there some way to make a form completely un-focusable?
The effect I'm trying to get is so that it looks like someone physically drew the line on the monitor itself.

I have a reference to MSXML6.0 so I can handle DOM in my VBA coding (Office 2007) but I need a helpfile. If I open the Object Browser for MSXML2, select the Class IXMLDOMElement and try to open help on the member nodeType nothing happens. Can anyone assist in how I can access help on the MSXML2 Library. Many people refers to the DOM Developer's Guide for help - unfortunately the is no DOM Developer's Guide, at least I can't find it, neither on MSDN nor on W3.

I'm self-taught in VB.net, having been a VB6 developer for years. I'm now out of the field but I'm making a forms app that I need for my new business. I am using VB2008 Express, and I'll upgrade to later versions when necessary. Because I am self-taught I mostly work from examples and there's a lot about .NET I don't understand.
SITUATION:I've built a Usercontrol. (A custom datetimepicker which I call "datebox"). Then in my application project, I add it to the toolox, then plunk it on a form. It works great so I use it many times in my project, each time with a various properties. No problem so far.

I'm looking for Version Control software that works with VS 2008 & allows multiple check-outs of a file, merging the changes as each version is checked back in. Obviously this would require manual resolution when two programmers changed the same procedure, but that rarely happens here-what usually happens is we have two (or more) programmers working on different parts of the program that happen to occur in the same file so only one of them can actually do their work at a time. Highly inefficient.
We're currently using Visual Source Safe, by the way. I 'inherited' this so I'm not *absolutely* certain it can't be configured for this, but if so none of the older programmers (in terms of time in this office) know about it. I think they used a home-grown program. Besides, I haven't been able to remember who I heard about it from so remembering that really isn't a help-at least not yet.

This is my code :
Dim Xml As New XmlDocument
Xml.Load("url")
Dim NoXml As XmlNodeList = Xml.SelectNodes("/rss/channel/item/title")
For i = 0 To NoXml.Count - 1
DataGridViewX1.Rows.Add(NoXml.Item(i).ChildNodes(0).InnerText)
Next
I want it to add more things then only the 'Title' in the DataGridView.

vb
Me.dgvSalvageListing.EndEdit()
and it will update as expected. So, how would I do something similar to my Simple Controls?

I want to create a calendar control to display employees vacation schedules for the year. It could be either monthly or scrolling weekly. It will draw its data from Access. I'm just looking for some general input on how some others might accomplish this. I know there are some paid options but my boss said I am on a $0 budget. A couple of ideas I had are:
1. Make a monthly view comprised of labels and textboxes for the actual dates. Populate the texboxes with a series of sql statements
2. Use a datagridview bound to a crosstab query, but I don't know how to have the datagridview show one week after the other.

Have experience with web scripting languages and SQL but am still getting used to VB.Currently using VS2008 to create a simple app in VB 2008 that uses a WebBrowser control. The user navigates to a web page, hits a button, and then every minute the web browser automatically refreshes, gets the page length, and alerts if the page length has changed by more than 100 chars.Unfortunately, I am noticing that VB uses the cached version of the page when it refreshes (I am using WebBrowser.Refresh, but have also tried using WebBrowser.Navigate(same page as before)). Is there any way that I can delete just that page in the cache without clearing the whole thing from my application before it reloads and calculates the new page length?

I've created a user control with a simple text box and a corresponding label and added a few custom control properties. When added to a form, I'm trying to loop through all control of this type and evaluate the custom property. In the below, the cntl.MyCustomProperty is not recognized. I can evaluate the property when I check each user control on the form by name, but not by using the loop below. I would much rather use the loop as it is much cleaner.
For Each cntl As Control In Me.Controls
If (TypeOf cntl Is MyUserControl) And cntl.MyCustomProperty = "ABC" Then
''Do some stuff
End If
Next

I am using Visual Basic.net 2010 to try to develop a simple VB application to control a data projector using RS232.So far, I have programmed the 'power on' button to open the serial port and send the power on command. The port opens successfully, but the projector does not receive the command properly, so it never powers on the projector. The RS232 command for power on is: BE EF 03 06 00 BA D2 01 00 00 60 01 00
My code for sending the command is: Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

What's the best way to store that the app is beta? You can't enter letters in the assembly info version (a "b" would be great). So is a setting who is set to Beta = True the best? I don't want to hardcode it, I want it to be at one place in the program.
