I'm using VB 2010 and I'm trying to use combo boxes on a current project but I'm not familiar with the code. I would like to set values to certain options in the combo box.
For example, if inside the combo box I listed the options:
Dog
Cat
Bird
I want dog to be set to = 1
cat = 5
bird = 12
To go further into depth, the code probably looks something like:
If cat.selected then
pet = 1
I have 7 radioButton options that allows the user to select which "Group" of guitar tuning they want. For example "General" and Dropped" Tuning". When the user selects rbGeneral a comboboxTuning gets items.add ("Standard") and others added to it. The same goes for when the user selects "Dropped": the comboboxTuning gets filled withe different terms. The problem is....I cannot figure out how to clear out the combobox.items (text) when switching between "Group" radio buttons. So, the comboboxTuning just keeps filling up.
View 4 RepliesI want to maintain a list of potential ComboBox values over multiple executions of my program, and to use that list as the DataSource on multiple ComboBoxes. I also want changes made to the DataSource to propagate over all of the ComboBoxes already existing in the application.
Can someone recommend what type of object I should use as my DataSource, as My.Settings objects don't seem to support generic list objects.
Also, along with that recommendation, can I also ask for suggestions as to how to propagate the updates of the collection to all ComboBoxes? I would imagine I need a collection type which raises events when its contents change, but I can't think of any, and in any case do not know which are compatible with My.Settings.

server. Then after the user selects a database, I have another button that he/she click and I want to retrieve file groups from a specific table. At this point when he/she clicks on that button I get an error: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. The problem is that in the last Sub in the If sentence gives an error of: Null Reference Exception, because the compiler thinks that in that event the data are not loaded, although the data are loaded when loadcomboBoxes sub is executed.
I'm trying to assign some parameters for a stored procedure with some values that are stored in a data table. in the code, I can set the parameter values to the data table, and give a column header or index without issue, but when it tries to execute at runtime it bombs out.the error I get is a variation on "Failed to Convert Parameter Value from a DataColumn to a String" depending on exactly how I try to assign the value.the data types are all correct elsewhere in the code.

other things I've tried to get this to work are all variations on the .Value=dates bit, such as

I've also tried declaring variables, and setting their values to the values in the columns, but the code returns an error saying that "Value of type 'System.Data.DataColumn' cannot be converted to string".I should point out that i'm doing this for 3 tables at once in this sub, 2 of them will only have a single row of data, but the third has an indeterminate number of rows.I'm afraid I don't know what else to do. I'm lead to believe by my mate and my lecturer that this should work, and of course it will work, but the evidence says otherwise.

I have a form with 4 comboboxes and a button. The first combobox is enabled, but the rest of the controls are disabled. When the form is opened I fill the first combobox (cbxMethod) with a datatable. When the user selects something in cbxMethod the next combobox (cbxStudy) will be filled and so on. When the last combobox (cbxAnalyte) has a selected value I want to enable the button and give it focus so the user can move forward with the program. I basically want to force the user to move from one combobox to the other, until all are filled.I am currently using the SelectionValueChange event, but this event only fires when the user changes the value with their mouse or hits the Enter key, not when the user hits the Tab key.

I am in need of a form that shows various options, exactly like the Options in Visual Studio. Since there are so many options I too want them categorized, with a TreeView to the left taking care of showing the right category.The usual 'easy' approach here would be to just place a TreeView control on the form, add some nodes, and give those nodes a tag or key that corresponds to a panel or UserControl with the options for that category.Since there will be a lot of options however, this is not really feasible design-wise; the form would be cluttered with possibly 50 panels, all of which I would need to select and bring to front from time to time to add controls to them that represent the options.
So I decided to create a custom control that does exactly that. The control is very similar to my Wizard usercontrol, users can add OptionsPanels at design time, which inherit Panel and simply represent one panel of options. When they do, the panel is added to a container panel, and at the same time a TreeNode is added to a TreeView. The control uses a custom ControlDesigner to handle design-time clicks in the Treeview, selecting a different node would select and bring to front the corresponding panel, allowing the user to add the controls he wants.
Due to the design time support the problem of having 50 panels is no longer present, only one panel will be visible at a time and selecting the right panel is as simple as selecting the corresponding TreeNode, just as during run-time. Anyway, I got all this working, but only for a single 'level' of categories. As you can see in the Visual Studio options, there can be multiple levels of categories. For example, the Environment node has a bunch of children, where each child represents one 'options panel'. There can even be deeper nesting, see the Text Editor node for example.Let me begin by drawing out the basics of how my control works so far.
The main control is an OptionsView control, which contains a SplitContainer with a TreeView to the left and a OptionsPanelContainer to the right. The OptionsPanelContainer is merely a Panel to which only OptionsPanel controls can be added, and which raises events when this happens, as well as when OptionsPanels are removed from it. An OptionsPanel also inherits Panel, and these are the actual panels the users will see in the control, one for each option category.For now, each OptionsPanel has exactly one corresponding TreeNode (and vice versa). In the Visual Studio options, each 'parent' category usually has a 'General' node as the first child, and the parent and this General node show the same option panel, but I am ignoring that for the moment.
The OptionsView control has a property Panels that returns the ControlCollection (Controls property) of the OptionsPanelContainer (in other words: it returns a collection of OptionsPanels that are in this container panel).

So far so good, this all works fine. I can add Panels via the designer and when I do a new TreeNode appears in the TreeView. I can select this node and the panel becomes visible (comes to the front).Now, I am a little stuck. How do I implement child option panels? And more importantly: how do I let the user add child panels?The most logical choice I think is to let each OptionsPanel have a property (ChildPanels or something) that returns the child OptionsPanels for that panel. Once the user selects an OptionsPanel then, he can look in the property grid to find its ChildPanels property and add child panels to that.
There is a problem though: what would this property return? It must return a ControlCollection of some container (this is, I think, a requirement for the designer features to work, otherwise panels are not added to the Form.Designer.vb file). But there is no container. I cannot add them to the OptionsPanel itself, that would make no sense because the parent OptionsPanel has its own set of controls (the options itself...), there cannot be another (fully docked) Panel on top of those obviously.The container of the main OptionsView then? That is not an option either, its Controls collection holds ALL OptionsPanels, not just the children of the selected panel. I cannot 'select' only the right panels either, that would require me to return a new instance of ControlCollection, it would be impossible to return the actual ControlsCollection that holds merely a small selection of its controls.
I'm storing data using my.settings (e.g., to use as a incremental counter). When I run my application it increments the value but, I do not know where to reset this value despite looking at all of the project files for them.
Is there a file that contains this data?
Note: at times during testing I don't want to reset the value(s) back to zero.

To see what was being done, I changed the constructor values to "TEST", after the XML gets read in (I verified what the XML is), the class values are still stuck to "TEST". Any more Ideas? I am looking into data validation as I need a way of setting a textbox to only accept numeric values. I have had a search for this and it doesn't seem as straight forward as I had hoped.
I have found a couple of possible methods, although the sites which I found them where very unclear on how they actually work. I feel strongly that I should know how all of my own programs work >_>

I'm have an app that currently allows a user to select a color (from a Color Dialog) which updates an unbound Datagridview with the name of the selected color & also changes the background of the selected row to that color.
I need to do one of 2 things:
Either change the Color Dialog so that I can set the colors available
Or Allow the user to select colors from a context menu and have that update the Datagridview.
I have a DetailsView which has two fields - one that is visible, one that is not. The first the user fills out, the second I want to auto-populate. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a way to set the value in this second invisible field. I've tried adding code like this to the Page_Load:

Now I've traced my values being passed and everything is correct. Values loops through 1 to 12 but still I continue to receive an exception. Only way I can avoid this is by throwing a Try, Catch statement around where I'm passing over the value.

I have a button which reads a comma separated value file and loads it into a richtextbox. Each line contains comma separated chars.
Once the file is loaded in the richtextbox, i want to be able to select specific values from each line and store them into an array.
For example:
Line1: a,b,c,d,e
I want to be able to place only the values "b" and "c" into an array.
I was thinking something like creating a menu for the richtextbox which will be triggered on right click, then highlight the values I want, press right click and select 'place these values in an array'.
it doesn't have to be the way i proposed it, but it definitely must use a richtextbox.

I cannot seem to get it to work in one code routine. I end up having to have a separate button to set the date after the page has loaded. I have tried all the blog posts using isbusy, timer etc but it does not seem to work. The code breaks and the error prompt says that id_pickupdate does not exist.
