Simple Way To Trim A File?
Oct 3, 2011
I have a large file (typically more than 1GB) with following format[code]...
My question: Is there a simple way to trim the header information without have to read the content part and save to disk again? I mean I just need to modifying the existing file and delete the header part.

I'm writing a simple application in vb.net and need to output some information to a log file for diagnostic purposes.In order to ensure that the log file doesn't get too big, I need to trim it to a certain number of lines (say 5000). For performance reasons, the trimming doesn't have to occur each time a log entry is written out nor is it critical that trimming occurs (for example, if the application crashes prematurely).
However I'm not really sure the best way to trim it. Loading the entire log into memory and then re-writing only the last 5000 lines back out would work, but I'm sure there is a cleaner and better way to do this.

I am trying to trim the path from a filename. With the following code, it returns "My Documents" where I should be getting "Test.txt". if I change the 1 to a 4 I get what I'm looking for, but that's not going to work if I'm working with a file deeper into subdirectories.I need it to display the name of the file regardless of location or file type. Any ideas?
Private Sub trimname()
Dim filelabel
split = current.Split("\")

I have a text file that has multiple blank lines and Im trying to return all the lines between two of them specifically
so if I have a file that looks like this:
[Code].....
I would like to grab lines 8-13. Unfortunately, it might not always be 8-13 as it could be 9-20 or 7-8, but it will however always be between the 2nd and 3rd line break.
I know how to trim characters and pull out singular lines, but I have no idea how to trim entire sections.

I want to know if there is a way to trim and audio.For example, I load in a song that is 3mins in length. I only want 1min 10s part to 2min 30s portion of the song and then save it as, let's say a WAV file.
Is there any API that I could look into to do this?

What I want to know is this: How do I make a simple name and address tracker file that I can enter data and save it as a file. The book does not cover this proceedure but It is what I want to do.
IE: Start VB2005 start new windows app. Name (whatever) drag 2 label's and 2 textbox's and one button for saving data entry. I want this program to enter name in textbox1 (press enter) then enter address in textbox2 (press enter) then save file (whatever name) when you click the button.

I'm looking to take a small snippet out of a wave file which I can do by reading in the headers, calculating time in to samples and selecting that data back to another file with the headers appropriate for the new smaller chunk.
My question though is does anyone use a nice small free library that does something like this. With the numerous different versions of wave files and headers not matching I'm trying not to re-invent the wheel and if someone has done it already and can handle these discrepencies that would be amazing. If not I'll fire up the kettle and get the coffee on.

I have a dbase.txt file with some data in it. i.e -
Institution Course StudentID
XZY ABC 2010-1111111 "the spaces between columns is one tab space"
XYZ ABC 2010-1222222
XYZ ABC 2010-1333333
I want to perform simple SQL like operation - i.e -
SELECT * FROM dbase.txt or
SELECT Institution FROM dbase.txt WHERE StudentID=2010-1111111 and an insert operation like -
INSERT dbase.txt VALUES (XYZ ABC 2010-1444444)
I have written some code which is not even closer to what I mentioned above. My program can read only the whole text file. There is a menu, but not functioning well, as well as my write function which is not working at all.
Below is my code -
Imports System.IO
Module Module1
Sub Main()
Dim intInput As Integer
Console.WriteLine("Main Menu")

I have a program with various settings, all stored in the app.config file. Often, I have a need to edit the connection string setting. I cannot do so using the My.Settings.myConnectionStringVariable method, as this is read-only. What I would like to do is have a big text box, and simply load the entire app.config file into it. The user could modify whatever they wanted, click save, and the program would save the new edits to the app.config file, and restart the program. I don't have a huge need to only pull out the connection string, as getting the text for the entire config file would suffice. However, if it is easier to pull out just the connection string from the config file, that would work too.

I have a simple text file containing a list of names that I wish to sort. I was hoping for something simple like:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("MyFile.txt")
System.IO.File.Sort("MyFile.txt")
System.IO.File.WriteAllText("MyFile.txt")
or something like that. Didn't want to actually write a bubblesort/quicksort routine myself.
I would imagine the routine would just rewrite the final file or would I have to make a new file and copy the contents back to the original?

I'm trying to use an XmlTextReader to read simple XML data from a file I wrote using the XmlTextWriter class. I've very little experience with XML and reading/writing from it, so it's been a little struggle. The writing part went OK though, but I can't really figure out how to do the reading. All examples I found using google handled it all slightly differently, and none made it really clear what they were trying to read...I am storing the position, size and a filepath of MDI windows using this format:
xml
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<MDIForms>
<Form X="208" Y="95" W="424" H="277">C:UsersNickDesktopabc.plm</Form>
[code].....
obviously I cannot do what I want with this. I need to get the attributes in each element too, and I need to read multiple elements and do something for each element...

I am using Microsoft OpenXml SDK 2.0 to create Office 2007, 2010 files, specifically a very simple excel file. It has a simple header which is merged with 6 cells to center. Bold font size 16. There are 6 columns and each has a header. Bold font size 14. There are rows of data related to each 6 columns. I am looking for decent examples of OpenXml SDK 2.0 to get started.

Each year I have to create 1099s from a legacy system. So in the past I had Foxpro code that ran out of a directory near where the Foxpro dataware house was. In 2009 we moved to SQL so I have to convert the code to VB and SQL
But I need to still store the text files and the report and I wanted to save settings in this "working directory"
[Code]....
Does this seem like the propery way to do this?
Finding documentation on XML is really difficult, because there is so much yet all of the examples seem to do it a different way.
