String Concatenation - Problems Caused By Space(s) Within Path/File Name?
Mar 29, 2011
I've got a small app which I use to start a 3rd party application. When run from a shortcut the VB app starts the 3rd party app to and when loaded it displays its own file/folder interface, the VB app the closes itself. However, if you open a file in explorer associated with the 3rd party app, the 3rd party application loads and opens the file itself and not the file/open interface.
Uh OK, so what's the problem??The issue is I have changed the file extension associated with the 3rd party app to now use my VB app. I can successfully open files with the app from explorer if there are no spaces in the file or folder path however if there are, the 3rd party app opens and displays a File not found error message and gives the path up to the point where the space then follows.The relevant snippets of code from the app relating to the issue is below, specifically Dim Arguments variable where I am not quite sure how my string cocantenation should be to deal with the value of the variable 'Filename' which may or may not contain spaces.

I'm developing an application in vb.net. You drag any type of file onto the exe, and a window pops up with some options for the file, then it saves the file to a different location, works some SQL magic, etc. It works great for the most part. The only issue I've found is that if the path of the file contains any spaces, the application will crash immediately with the error window:[URl]..I'm using: Private filename as String = Command$ This is located right inside my form's class declaration, not within a sub/function.Without this line, my program runs fine (although useless, without accessing the file).I've also tried (I think this was it, I don't have the code with me at the moment): Private filename as String = Environment.CommandLine So, in vb.net, is there a way to drag a file onto an exe and use that path name, even if there are spaces in the path name?

I've spent the last 3 hours trying to figure out why this string won't concatenate.
The function takes in a mapped drive letter and creates a UNC path and returns it.
Any thoughts welcome:

In VB.net, I tested concatenating 100k strings and found out one thread alone did it in 23 milliseconds. Two threads (each concatenating 50k) then joining the two at the end took 30 milliseconds. Performance wise, it didn't seem beneficial to utilize multiple threads when dealing with only 100k concatenations. Then I tried 3 million string concatenations and two threads each handling 1.5MM always demolished one thread handling all 3 million. I imagine at some point using 3 threads becomes beneficial, then 4, and so on. Is there a more efficient way to concatenate millions of strings in .NET?
fyi, this is the code I wrote:
Imports System.Text
Imports System.Threading
Imports System.IO

Possible Duplicate: The difference between + and & for joining strings in VB.Net.In VB.NET you can use either += or &= to concatenante a string (ignoring using a StringBuilder for this question -- this is directed at a very simple concatenation).

But when I comment those lines (which are uncommented in code above) its working fine.
I am taking value in filepath variable from file dialog's FileName property.
EDIT: I have also compared the values of variable stropt and strwithpara with "IF" condition and found those are same.

I'm trying to concatenate two properties into one string like so:
public class thing
public property word() as string()
public property count() as integer()
[Code]....
This is what I want, but it doesn't help that its in the debug output...I need to put it into a single string. I've tried using a_thing.count(i).tostring, but it doesnt work. If I look at the arrays individually, they have exactly the contents I want. But I can't concatenate them. Does it have something to do with suppressing the new line that debug.writeline usually creates?

So I ran into a problem when running a command whose Path contained a space.apparently anything after the space would be treated as a parameter to the command.In the code below, 'path' is the path to the command and par1 and par2 are arguments to that command. The code below works, but could someone tell me why it works?Initially I was creating a literal string by placing around it like so: """string""" , but I needed the fourth quote when passing a variable.How is the use of quotes functioning here? I get an "augmentexception was unhandled" error whenever I run this script. The string assigned to "location" is fine, in fact when I paste it to the clip board and replace the "location" string in the ReadAllText() it works fine. Any suggestions? I assume this is a super easy fix but I've been at it for quit a while with no luck.
Code:
Public Sub OpenQuestions(ByVal questionreturn As String)
Dim Qraw, location As String

The reason I ask is that I want to print, at run-time, a file in the application's resources, like this:
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim printProcess As New Process
printProcess.StartInfo.FileName = "C:UsersGeoffrey van WykDocumentsCountdown_Timer_Help.rtf"
' printProcess.StartInfo.FileName = My.Resources.Countdown_Timer_Help
printProcess.StartInfo.Verb = "Print"
printProcess.Start()
End Sub

Dim dbconn As OleDbConnection
Dim DBCommand As OleDbDataAdapter
Dim DS As New DataSet
dbconn = New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:COLORsitedataCUFORHDR.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE IV;")
[Code]...
I prefer SQL server but im afraid in this app I have no choice. I think the .DBF file is v III dBase according to a thrid party .dbf viewer. The code explodes on the DBCommand.Fill(DS) line, telling me I have provided and invalid file path. The path is good to go.
Should I be using a driver with a different provider? When I remove the Extended Properties parameter I get an error unrecognizable database format - hinting in this case the path is correct.

I've searched everywhere to find out why the heck my program is doing this, but couldn't find anything like it...? I'm making a flash card program. Part of my program takes images corresponding to other data from a certain area, chosen by the user, and moves them to another folder, for later use. I want to store the path for the image next to the other data, storing the path as a string. When no image is chosen, the variable for the path is simply "no image".

I would like to get the width of some text drawn by GDI+ in an Integer so that I can adjust the position of a cursor.
I used:
"lCursor = g.MeasureString(vInputText, Font)"
In which 'lCursor' is the offset for the original location of the cursor. But apparently the output of MeasureString is not integer and can't even parse it to integer.

I have a string that has three spaces in it.
In the following examples, underscores represent the spaces:
Quote:
_x-xx-xxxx_x.xx.xx_xx
I need to remove just the first space. Now, i tried just replacing the space with nothing, like so:
VB.NET
If s.Contains(" ") Thens = s.Replace(" ", "")End If
But, that removes every space. I also tried .StartsWith, but it still removed every space. I didn't actually expect that to work, but if I hadn't tried it, I wouldn't have actually know.
how to remove just that first space?
