I've been looking around online, and havent quite found what im looking for.I have an unbound DataGridView on my form that has 1 columns ID and NAME, i did a loop to fill in all the ID columns. Then when i loop trough all the ID's, i want to update the NAME column with some data.
Using VS2005, VB.Net, Dot Net 2.0, SQL Server 2000. If have some Columns (varchar and numbers) in a DataRow that I want to set to DBNull in the database. The fields as defined as Nullable in SQL DB table.
I have some fields that are populated when loaded but I want to update to be null using the ADO.Net data objects. If I try and use Row("FieldName") = DBNull.Value a 0 gets written to number fields (not sure what gets written to varchar fields.) What code should be used to update fields to Null using ADO.Net dataobjects?
I am completly flummoxed!!! I have writen code for updating my table from a form but when I use the same code only changing the table names it wont work I get the following message: "Update requires a valid Update Command when passed DataRow collection with modified rows" My codes are as follows:
I have an issue with a data base updating it won't update for me in debgging mode it is stopping here on this bit of code which is highlighted in red. the error which comes up is .(update requires a valid update command when passed datarow collection with modified rows.)

Attempting to run an SQL statement to UPDATE a column in a table with new data. The column being updated is defined as varchar(40) and the new data is 41 bytes (varchar(41)). I get a generic 'data will be truncated' error message, but no detail on which column caused the problem. I've attached a sample VB program to illustrate the issue. In this scenario, Company is defined as varchar(40).
My question: Can I get a more detailed error message? i.e. can I get an error message that tells me the row and column that the truncation occurs in? Often times, I may be updating hundreds or thousands of rows and only one value in one column from the source file is too large for a database cell. As a related question, does each OLEDB provider create its own error messages. i.e. will the MS SQL Server OLEDB provider potentially give different text in the error message than say the MS Jet OLEDB provider?

VB.NET i have only one colum in back end database that is roll. .. Now i want to update a particular data .. the data types is integer.. i has a data like 12 and i ant to update it 13 how can i do..
I want to insert a value from loop in datarow so before entering value in datarow, i want to check that a perticular column NAME exist in table or not...please tell me how can i check it. (vb.net preferred).
I have a function in VS2008 VB.NET that creates a dataset and reads field values from that were loaded from a SQL Server 2008 database tables. The tables are from varied sources and in some cases particular column/field names are different. Some use a long name; others use a short name. I need to determine whether a short name or a long name is being used.Pseudo code:If row("ShortName") Exists then ReadDataFrom r("ShortName").ToStringElse ReadDataFrom r("LongName").ToStringEnd If
How would I determine if a particular column name exist in a dataset or datarow?
I have an OleDBDataAdapter which I am using to communicating with an Access database. I have generated a SELECT command with parameters, and used this to generate a DataSet.I have then used the OleDbCommandBuilder to generate the UPDATE and INSERT commands. I can use this successfully to fetch data and then update it.
Next I have created a I have a DataRow using DataSet.Tables.NewRow which I have populated.I have then used my DataAdapter to insert this record. This works just find. I would like to now update this DataRow.Can I refresh this DataRow so that it populates the fields such as the autonumber field and the automatically populated timestamp? I could select it again but I don't know the autonumber. Is there not some way that I can get the existing DataRow to synchronise with the new row?
I need to display a column called Full Name in the my datagridview, but the datasource (datatable) does not have a FullName column. It only has FirstName and LastName columns. I'm setting up my DataGridView like this:
I have a gridview loaded with data from my database and a gridview swapping function which after exchanging data between rows with a column call "Priority", I want to save these changes back to my database. Only the "Priority" column value will be change, how do I update only that Column of my dataset table to my SQL database?
I've made a dataset using the dataset designer, and I'm trying to add a column to reflect changes made to the database (added a column, nothing fancy). Is there a way to 'refresh' the dataset schema from the datasource without deleting my adapter (and all the methods and queries I've created)?
I'm going through a book which is teaching me some basic coding principles of the language. The current section is detailing how to set up a master child form using two tables linked with a foreign key. The master table is displayed as a number of text boxes, and below is a grid with the child table which shows related records to whatever master record you happen to be checking out. At the top of the screen are the default navigation controls that are added with the grid. The master table is named Person and the child table Book. They are linked using a foreign key and have cascade set up on them.
The book informed me of the code required under the save icon on the navigation control so that when it is clicked both tables will be updated as required. It is as follows: If Validate() Then 'Make sure editing has completed on both master and child tables Me.BookBindingSource.EndEdit() Me.PersonBindingSource.EndEdit() [Code] .....
I have double checked that the code matches that shown, so this should in theory work fine. But if I manually delete a record from the Book (child table) grid and then click the Save icon on the navigation bar it comes up with the error "Update Requires A Valid DeleteCommand when passed DataRow collection with deleted rows".
Why changes made are not permanently saved to the database? I gather that it's using a "copy" of the data in the database but how do I get the code/form to make changes to the actual underlying database records as well as just the copy? I find this system very unusual, if someone deletes a record in the application why would anyone want this to be just done temporarily?
I'm trying to save the edits I'm doing to a dataset by using the tableadapter.update command and get this error when I attempt to do so:
Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows.Whats the correct syntax for doing this? I have this as the update command in my
Private Sub SaveExceptionButton(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles saveexceptionsButton.Click Try Me.Validate() Me.Scratchpad3BindingSource.EndEdit()
I'm still pretty new at .Net and database coding, and am working on a small program that is generating an error and I'm not sure how to resolve it.[code]The following statement is giving me the error below: m_DA.Update(m_DataTable)"Update requires a valid InsertCommand when passed DataRow collection with new Rows".I know the answer is going to be very simple, but I'm at a loss. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could point out the flaw in my code and how to correct it. And yes, I have done fairly extensive searching on this error, but none of them give any idea how to fix it, they just hint around at what's wrong.
This was working on the last test, now it's throwing an InvalidOperationException saying Update requires a valid InsertCommand when passed DataRow collection with new rows. No change in this
Dim NewRowB as DataRow=dsBatch.Tables("Batch").NewRow dsBatch.Tables("Batch").Rows.Add(NewRowB daBatch.Update(dsBatch,"Batch")
What *has* changed is that I'm trying to fix the same error that's occurring on a different dataset in a different form. This should add a blank record to the dataset, then update the database. The blank fields allow nulls. The reason for this (and there may be another way to do this-I'm helping a novice fix up his code and, since this has been working, I haven't yet really looked at it) is to obtain the correct value for an identity field. We've found that when the row is added to the dataset, if it doesn't currently contain any rows, the identity value is set to zero-but when the database is updated, it gets a different value (because previously inserted rows have been deleted). So we update the database then retrieve the correct identity value before continuing. As I said, this was working fine-until I started working on the same problem occurring in a different dataset. So why would that affect this dataset?
I created VB.Net Win Form application in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 that connected to Microsoft SQL Server 2008.The DataGridView was used to connect the SQL Server 2008 and WinForms. When I delete or add records, run into error: Update requires a valid DeleteCommand when passed DataRow collection with deleted rows.
I have looked at multiple posts regarding this issue, but can't seem to find a solution. To keep it simple I have an Access database with a single table. It does have a field as a primary key. When I click the save icon on the Binding Navigator I get this error having to do with the following code:
I cannot set the Refresh the Data Table check box in Advanced Options of the TableAdapter Configuration Wizard as it is grayed out. Once again, I have a primary key.
The posts I have reviewed indicate that an UpdateCommand needs to be created, but I can't understand how it should be done. W
when the program is already save the data and when the process is on updating the dataset it give me error say's"Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows."The error occur at the line in bold letter in the codes below..
Dim classgroup As String classgroup = "" If Me.ClassComboBox.Text = "Key Project" Then
I've been trying to highlight a search result in DataTable. First, I loop through rows of DataTable and call a function to look for a matched keyword to highlight those words, then update DataTable row with a new string with highlighted keywords.I bind the DataTable dtResult to the DataList. It worked fine until I added this code block to SearchDemo function to highlight the keyword :
For i = 0 To dtResult.Rows.Count - 1 Step 1 Dim strTemp As String = dtResult.Rows(i).ToString strVerse = blHelper.Highlight(s, strTemp)
I have finally been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century and I'm learning VB.NET
[Code]....
I get a "Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement" on the da.update line. The bulk of the code is copied from a working section of the program, I have just added the "newrow" stuff. I am pretty confident I have the names of all the fields correct.
