I am trying to use the settings page to save user changeable options and when I try to read in anything from the settings I get the following error.
Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference.
Example: Me.textbox.text = My.Settings.Servername
I have created a bunch of user settings using my.settings.*** and only save these upon form_closing for the time being.I wanted to save the settings every 30 or so seconds, so I created a timer with 30 second tick intervals. Inside the tick event of that timer I included the code that I had in the form_closing event.While it works to save the settings, it also 'freezes' or 'skips' the main program for about a second or 2 while it's saving. The code to save settings includes looping through at least 2 arrays and adding them to the settings specialcollection object one item at a time.Is there a better way to accomplish this, without 'locking' up the main form for a second or so? Is it feasible to loop through all the settings in a different thread (can you access settings cross-thread)?

We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..

The application was previously using GlobalMemoryStatus() and MEMORYSTATUS structure to retrieve memory information. But since, the Physical memory of the hardware in which the application runs is more than 2GB, the code was changed to use GlobalMemoryStatusEx() and MEMORYSTATUSEX structure. View 1 RepliesI have 1 process that acts as a server (TcpListener) and one or more processes that act as clients (TcpClient). The clients are sending Tcp requests to the server every 1-2 seconds to which the server responds with a result message.
In normal conditions the server will use TcpListener.Stop when it closes, but sometimes the server will crash (for whatever reason) and then this is not done. If I then try to restart then I get the following error:
"Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted"
I only get this error when there are clients running who keep trying to connect despite the TcpListener is not there anymore (crashed).I don't get this error when I first manually close/kill all clients before restarting the server/TcpListener.I'm looking for an automatic recovery procedure that deals with this error/problem. I have added a settings file to a project but whenever I reference one of the setting variables I get the following error:

I had to manually add this in a merge conflict and the settings code worked fine in the originating branch. The generated code also seems to be identical from what I can see.
I am accessing the settings using My.Settings.{VarName}
edit: Just tried deleting the settings files. This still happens once the file has been re-generated from the app.config values.

If I'm not mistaken, the code will not continue in the Try block if the first part fails and then move on to the catch statement, correct? I'm adding and deleting a bunch of different entries in the registry and the computers I've tried my app on so far, have not failed. So I'm not able to test if this method will work for error catching. If there's a better method, I'd appreciate the info.
In an app I am writing I need to be able to display the current settings of the following:- Windows "automatically restart on error" setting from advanced, startup and recovery section Paging file size and whether it is custom size or set to system managed Is this at all possible? perhaps VB has a function to do so I cannot find, or perhaps I can do by querying a registry value?

During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

my old vb6 program used to store to ini files now with .net I rekon I need to do something new.. was thinking XML but then in searching around I stumbled apon this my.settings stuff.. so I followed the instructions but something strange is going one..
1. whats the difference between the standard my.settings and adding a new class that is of settings ? anything ?
2. I made 10 new settings in the setting manager but when I try to change then it gives me the old squiggle line saying no go.
I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing with this. It's a new setting I just added and it's empty, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Anyone know what's going on and what needs to be done to get it to accept a value and not want to be "initialized"?
I get the error mentioned when printing to a network printer.The error does not occur when run under XP/Win2003, in a WinForm app or when a local printer is used.The error does only occur when run as a Windows Service under Vista/Win7/Win2008 and printing to a network printer.The Windows service runs under a network user that has access to the network printer. Before I print I check if the printername (including network path) is ok by looping through the available printers.

View 7 RepliesI can double click on the Setting.settings and the projects Settings grid appears in design. I change the value of a user scope setting yet when I run the application in debug it picks up a value I set initially instead of the current value of the setting.
