C# - Error "Settings To Access Printer 'printername' Are Not Valid" When Printing From Windows Service?
Apr 27, 2010
I get the error mentioned when printing to a network printer. The error does not occur when run under XP/Win2003, in a WinForm app or when a local printer is used. The error does only occur when run as a Windows Service under Vista/Win7/Win2008 and printing to a network printer. The Windows service runs under a network user that has access to the network printer. Before I print I check if the printername (including network path) is ok by looping through the available printers.

I am working on a .NET Windows Service where I am trying to store settings that will be used when the service is started and while it is running. I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. However, Google and SO are silent when it pertains to storing these settings with a windows service.

I have a VB.NET solution built in Visual Studio 2010. It consists of a class project, a service, and a setup project. I have successfully created a setup, and run the setup from the "Release" directory of the setup project (outside of Visual Studio). It installed the service (on the same machine as where the project is), and the service seems to be running fine. The service executable is installed in a directory under c:program files (x86) along with some DLL's it is dependent of. The service (actually the class project I mentioned above) uses some settings from My.Settings. As far as I know these settings are stored in a app.config file in the project directory, as well as in a settings.settings file in the My Project directory under the project directory.
Neither of these files are installed by the installer. But the service can only run if it can read the settings. So where does my service get these settings from? To check if it still reads the settings from the VS project directory, I have temporarily renamed that directory, but that didn't affect the correct operation of the service.

I am using VB 2008 & Access Databases for creating WinForm Applications. Also i am using Crystal Reports for Report solution. my question is How do i created reports such a way that they can be printed in faster Ascii Format on any DotMatrix printer. The default true type fonts make printing very slower.
I tried to use "Draft 10 cpi" font which come to available me after i installed a correct driver for my Epson printer. which also helped me overcome this problem. however it wont be the scenario with all my clients i.e. they might have different printers having different Make with different drivers installed. i have tried to open such project on there PC but the printing wont come in Draft instead the fonts get expanded too much & the print wont come right.

If you edit a service in Windows 7 and go to the Log On Tab, there is an option to "Allow service to interact with desktop". I'm trying to ensure that it is set for a certain service using VB.NET.
Note: Doing this during the install of a program is not an option. It has to be done at run time.

I've written a windows service in VB.NET 2.0 and the service needs to know a few file paths and other settings when it starts in order to be able to do what its supposed to do. These are settings that users of my service need to be able to configure themselves so I cant hard code them in.At the moment I just have the service look for a file named Config.INI in the same directory that it is being run from and if this file exists it attempts to read the settings in from there... this works perfectly, but it just feels a bit clunky and old. If it was a normal windows app I would store the settings in an XML file in the user's application data folder or something but as this is a Service then thats not possible as it is not run by any one user (well technically it is, the Local System account). I then thought about using the registry but I seem to recall people saying that you should avoid storing settings in the registry if you can really, especially with the new security in Vista and Server 2008.

I am trying to work on a service where I need to export a report into a folder under the service project and email it to the user. The delete the report when complete. The issue I am having is I need to know how to access a folder under the project. I know you can use System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory to get into the bin where the excuting file is but I want to get to a folder is this possible? If not is there a way of creating the folder under the bin directory and accessing it. I can manually create a folder under the bin but didnt really want to do that.

I've been developing in .NET (VB, C++, C#) for a number of years, but I am finally creating my first service application (in VB). I need to read/write to a file contained within a user's documents. As a service is not associated with a particular user, would a service have access to a user's documents? ...regardless if that user is signed on or not?

I'm new to write windows services and I was searching around collecting necessery info and howtos. What I'm missing is the interaction between my webapp and the service. The servicecontroller sending messages to the service and gives me the main status of the service. Is there a way to get custom messages, set custom properties and get properties? If there are not, should I use a file for both the service and the web app where both can read and write on, like a settings file in xml or are there better methods? Is there a way to get the messages in the corresponding eventlog, how do I access them?

I have a very simple VB.net Windows Service written using VS.net 2008. The program after doing several other functions writes a log in one of the network folders. The code is as shown below: If I change the path from "Y:Activity_Log" to "C:Activity_Log" it is working like a charm. What is the problem if I use Y drive which is a valid one and I am able to access it from other VB.net desktop apps. Please help.
Dim strFile As String = "Y:Activity_Log" & DateTime.Today.ToString("dd-MMM-yyyy") & ".txt"
Dim fs As FileStream = Nothing
Dim activityfolder As String = "Y:Activity_Log"
Dim di As System.IO.DirectoryInfo

I'm trying to do a simple select query from a MS access database from my service. Has anyone managed to do this in the past using their Jet eninge?
I had originally debugged and tested the code in a windows form and it worked fine. Once I moved the code into a windows service and installed it, it bombs out and doesn't generate any errors.
Thing is, I just found a .mdb file on the net so not entirely sure of the database version. I'm running office 2007 and read that if you used the .accdb version on a machine that didn't have access 2007 installed (which is going to be 99% likely), you had to install some drivers etc. in order for it to work. That is not an option unfortunately which is why I went with the old .mdb that could use Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 without any drivers to be installed.
Do I need to import something into this project to get this to work? I've attached the code below. I've added a comment after the problematic line.
Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection
Dim dbProvider As String
Dim dbSource As String
[Code]....

Try
Dim rptt As String = "The receipt is mine"
Dim ss As System.IO.StreamWriter
[Code].....
The text, The reciept is mine, is written to a file called Receipt.txt as required. and a command is given to the printer but the printer does not print characters on the paper as the paper rolls out of the printer during printing process.

I want to know if there is function to know whether the printer you are printing on is a dot matrix?
Our official receipt is printed in a dot matrix and must not be printed on any other kind of printer.

I am trying to develop a program that will open, print and then close the selected files from the listview. The file could be of any type, but I am particularly interested in autocad drawing files - .dwg format. The printing needs to be done at the printer. There is a multibox which allows the user to select the printer .
Currently, I can open the files and select the printer but I am really getting stuck at printing.

printing a displayed form to a printer. This is my current code. (I am using the PrintForm visual basic PowerPack.)
Private Sub btnPrint_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnPrint.Click
cPrintForm.PrintAction = Printing.PrintAction.PrintToPreview
cPrintForm.Print()
End Sub
This prints the form fine, but the problem is that the page printed is portrait, and my whole form doesn't fit on it, so I was wondering how to set it to landscape?

I have a RTB. I want to print the contents to a printer. KB 811401 does most of what I want. I want the on screen RTB to change size based on the settings of the selected printer. That way the user really gets WYSIWYG between the screen adn the printer. This application prints to labels so it is very important that what the user sees on the screen comes out exactly the same on the printer. Last night I think I found an example that linked the RTB to the printer, but it was an old version of VB that does not work with 2008 .NET and I can't find it today anyway.
