Use Window Form App To Manage Windows Service Apps My.settings?
Aug 26, 2009
I have a solution with two applications in it. One is a windows form application that I want to use to set and manage a windows SERVICE application app settings.
For example. The form has the database connection string on it, when updated. The windows service application settings are updated.. I can get it to work for the windows application, but I need to jump boundries to the other application( Windows Service) and update the app settings there.
I am working on a .NET Windows Service where I am trying to store settings that will be used when the service is started and while it is running. I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. However, Google and SO are silent when it pertains to storing these settings with a windows service.
I have a VB.NET solution built in Visual Studio 2010. It consists of a class project, a service, and a setup project. I have successfully created a setup, and run the setup from the "Release" directory of the setup project (outside of Visual Studio). It installed the service (on the same machine as where the project is), and the service seems to be running fine. The service executable is installed in a directory under c:program files (x86) along with some DLL's it is dependent of. The service (actually the class project I mentioned above) uses some settings from My.Settings. As far as I know these settings are stored in a app.config file in the project directory, as well as in a settings.settings file in the My Project directory under the project directory.
Neither of these files are installed by the installer. But the service can only run if it can read the settings. So where does my service get these settings from? To check if it still reads the settings from the VS project directory, I have temporarily renamed that directory, but that didn't affect the correct operation of the service.
If you edit a service in Windows 7 and go to the Log On Tab, there is an option to "Allow service to interact with desktop". I'm trying to ensure that it is set for a certain service using VB.NET.
Note: Doing this during the install of a program is not an option. It has to be done at run time.
I've written a windows service in VB.NET 2.0 and the service needs to know a few file paths and other settings when it starts in order to be able to do what its supposed to do. These are settings that users of my service need to be able to configure themselves so I cant hard code them in.At the moment I just have the service look for a file named Config.INI in the same directory that it is being run from and if this file exists it attempts to read the settings in from there... this works perfectly, but it just feels a bit clunky and old. If it was a normal windows app I would store the settings in an XML file in the user's application data folder or something but as this is a Service then thats not possible as it is not run by any one user (well technically it is, the Local System account). I then thought about using the registry but I seem to recall people saying that you should avoid storing settings in the registry if you can really, especially with the new security in Vista and Server 2008.
It is possible to create windows service using windows form control in vb.net. give me the url or links. The windows forms control such as, Timer control, list-box, notify-icon control etc.
I have to admit that I was sceptical it would work... but below is the code. I had to make a minor change to the code you suggested. Whenever I tried IPC$ it would return a 53 result code, even though I'm sure the share exists. So at the suggestion of another website I removed the share and just the computer name and this worked.
I get the error mentioned when printing to a network printer. The error does not occur when run under XP/Win2003, in a WinForm app or when a local printer is used. The error does only occur when run as a Windows Service under Vista/Win7/Win2008 and printing to a network printer. The Windows service runs under a network user that has access to the network printer. Before I print I check if the printername (including network path) is ok by looping through the available printers.

Is there a way in which I could invoke a windows form from a particular windows service....??
Have created a windows service, installed it and everything is working fine... Now I want to design another windows form that I would call from the service while running it I know that with the help of ServiceController class we could interact with windows service from a windows application but am not sure of the other way round implementation....
I'm trying to findout a way to manage another program windows programaticly. Such as enable/disable minimize/maximize buttons and whole border frame itself. Also i'm trying to prevent or disable showing that program on taskbar.
I'm trying to write a program wich culd run several other and grind them on screen without border frames or/and without buttons.
How to build the n'tier application. I have read some book tell about this, like "Building Client/Server Applications With VB.NET" by Jeff Levinson, beth massi video tutorial "building simple n-tier applications", and other else.
In my practice, i create 3 projects to handle each layer progress. That are DAL (Data Access Layer), BLL(Business Logic Layer) and UIL (User Interface Layer).
My problem is i don't want to use web service like beth massi do, and i don't want to use remote object like Jeff L do. So i decide to create it by my rules. Here above something that i do.
In DAL Section, I put all datasource like Beth Massi do over here. I also create a manager class like massi do to handle datasource over here. Also in this class, i create the UML structure of this datasource.
I'm Jojo and i'm developing a program to help ppl in WoW.There's just 1 function which I can't manage to figure out, the program has to switch to the WoW window when I click a button.
I am devloping a custom designer (like the form designer), which can be used to design custom controls at designtime (see spoiler for screenshot). The problem is that i want to show the propertyes of the currently selected object in the propertygrid window in VS, and i can not figure out how to do that.
i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a generic class and is not marked as [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit interface as the default interface to COM using the ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.
ive seen some programming languages which are java based or use jav which allow you to program applications which can then be embedded or executed within a webpage. so for example you could make a small app which showed an animal which followed the mouse cursor and made a sound when you press mouse button. So is this possible with vb.net? (or is that what asp is for?
what WPF based apps are?Is it an application that runs under Silverlight? If so, how?I know; Windows Forms based apps, console apps,DLL _ Class Library Projectsand I've had an introduction to ASP.Net.What I mostly want to know is, if WPF apps are for Silverlight then do they also run in a server based fashion like anASP.NET website would when you create ASP.Net webpages? Is it a way of creating what looks like a FORMS BASED application but it runs in a browser instead or what? Please enlighten me a bit further as I have no idea what WPF is all about.
I am working on a Windows service application and have followed few tutorials online and am able to install/uninstall start/stop service fine. I need to show a windows form to the user when service starts and am not sure how to show a form at OnStart() event. The form1.vb is added to the main project. ServiceProcessInstaller1 account is set to localSystem and nothing else is changed. [code]
I have searched google and then this forum too, there are a few threads about this but nothing gives a detailed info on how to do this.Is there anybody who has done this kind of project? Getting Weather info from some website using some web services and displaying them onto your windows form?
I am making a server program, it works, cool.Made it display the info coming in via a textbox, the number of users connected, etc.I based it off of one of the members heres examples (jmcilhinney). However, I am kind of in a rock and a hard place.Do I try and convert it to a windows service so its on all the time? Or do I leave it in a exe format?I have never touched windows services before, but they look promising. However, this will be residing on a collocated server running Windows Server 2003.The problem with that is, if I run it. Person B, C, D, E, whoever.. can not see it due to the virtualized desk tops of RDC (even under the same username).I am kinda curious if I should make it a windows service, then make my 'display' program that just.. remotely taps into it to control it, and view stats and such. The 'server' will take info sent from the client, and add it into a database, then pass back some commands and such.
one of the apps that I wrote a couple months ago is getting to be rolled out to my production floor; one issue tho - It works great as a standard executable (you double-click, it starts and waits for data), however, I cannot get it to start as a system service.
I've already done a little bit of research for how to create a system service, but most of the information that I've come across is point to VC# or Visual Studio 2010 - I'm not finding much for VB 2010. Additionally, I'm only using VB 2010 Express and I'm pretty sure that I don't have the Windows Service application template's on my PC.
My application does have a "UI", but there isn't any user interaction; it starts and just sits minimized in the system tray polling a directory for the existence of a file - i.e. the windows form is not required.
I have downloaded and installed VB 2010 Express. I have used "Manage Help Settings" to download and install content to disk. My computer seems to know that has happened as I navigate through the various "Manage Help Settings" menus. As a former VB 6 programmer
I am used to getting context sensitive help at the click of a mouse. I spite of the steps above, when I click "Help' on the menu I get transferred to the Visual Studio website without any oportunity to access the local help I suspect must be there somewhere.
Within VB.NET, trying to find an easy way to in a sense check the check-box "Use Windows to configure my Wireless Network Settings". This is an option that forces windows to use your wireless over third-party programs that may try to steal control. I am aware this requires to have WZC enabled within services and that's something that can be easily accomplished one way or another.
I doubt or rather cannot find a proper registry value or API call to check or initiate such a task.
I have used webbrowser control to automate the login issues(entering username/password)).ie programattically i can enter username & password for websites that requires it.But the problem is, for certain website ,credentials are asked in a POPUP window, not in the windows form. So how to enter the username/password in popup windows.
In my project i have one parent window form with one menu bar and one status bar. that is what i want is:when i show the child form to see in the status ber an icon relative to the child window. How i can do that? And if that can't be how i can see an icon in a task bar?
I have a form program that runs long, and for kicks I was wondering if I could out put some data to a "real console" -not the Console useing the Output debugger.
VB Windows form Application.. I am developing an application of which part of the program is around configuration settings allowing the user to enter configuration items. When the menubar item for configuration menu is clicked on the main form the menu opens. This is fine but the mainform should not become active again until the configuration menu has closed. This does not happen right now and the mainform simply comes to the foreground and the configuration form goes to the background... I realize that coding an event on the Child form to handle this would not work because the child window loses control and the main form gains control.. I thought of coding a function as follows on the main form but it does not seem logical because i would have to add to it for everyform and do checking to make sure the child is actually open before trying to close it..
Private Sub Form1_GotFocus(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.GotFocus MailSettingsWindow.Close() RentalSettingsWindow.Close()
[code]....
I did away with the above sub routine and used the below code as per the recomendation of using showdialog which works just as i was looking for.
Private Sub MailingAndEmailSettingsToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MailingAndEmailSettingsToolStripMenuItem.Click Dim MailConfig As New MailSettingsWindow() MailSettingsWindow.Showdialog() End Sub
I am trying to communicate with a Windows service on a remote machine on the network but i keep getting an exception saying the following: "System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot open Service Control Manager on computer 'machine001'. This operation might require other priviledges. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Access is denied.
