Use Form Controls In Background Threads?
Jun 8, 2010
I've just recently figured out threading, and how to use it. I was even able to figure how to make a background thread modify the text property of any form control that has a text property.
I figured if you could specify the name of the control whose Text property you want to modify, it could be done easily, and I was right[code]...
Is there a way that you could do this, but eliminate the need to specify the control type as a parameter and maybe have the application determine what control you're trying to use by it's name?

I have multiple picturebox controls in my form. Both of them contain an image with a transparent background. I want them to be on top of each other. I've already set their BackColor property to Transparent, but when I place one on top of the other one, the following happens: [URL]. How can I make them transparent while they are on top of each other?

I have a form with transparent background (using png file).All controls placed over it becomes black at start then they change there color and comes to there original state on MouseHover. Its not the transparency keys problems since the transparency key color is different that controls back color. What can be the problem?

I'm using the following flavor of threading to create n number of worker threads. These threads all have a bit of latency as they interrogate devices that have strict temporal/physical limits.
[Code]...
I'm looking for a pattern that will let me start the worker threads then wait patiently for completion. Sounds simple ("Just raise an event!") but there seem to be timing landmines. Since the completion EventHandler is single threaded, collisions can occur that destroy the EventHandler data.
Is there a straight forward way for 1 of n threads to report an "I'm done" condition?I've literally got lists of these for c++ but vb.net/CLR is giving me brain freeze.

I can't remember exactly if this is possible or not but what I am attempting I would think should theoretically be possible. I know it is possible in WPF but the company I am working for doesn't want to make the transition just yet. Basically what I want is to use a background image on a form for the background and I have a docked control on the right and left. I have set the background on both of these docked controls to transparent however it is showing the back color rather than the background image. I tried, rather than setting the background image property, to override the onpaintbackground and onpaint events and use e.graphics.draw(picture, me.clientrectangle) but it still seems to just pick up the backcolor as the true transparent background so I'm wondering if it's possible to get it to show the background image through the control rather than the backcolor of the form?

I've created a news ticker control, which reads from RSS feeds and scrolls the text Horizontally. The plan is to have 3 of these on my Windows form, which will each display their own information.
The control is created as a label, which is populated with the text, and then scrolls right to left using a timer, once the label gets to the end of the text, and disappears of the left side, the rss is re-read, and then the cycle resumes. The problem is that with multiple copies of this controls on my form, once one gets to the end of it's run, all three freeze while the rss is reread, rather than just the control that needs to do it.
Is there a way to run each of these controls independently (threading?)? Or is there a glitch in my code causing this? (below - some elements not included, but it should be fairly obvious what is happening!)

I have made one game Tic tac toe. Where the use could place a X or a O i used a empty label with back colour "transparent" for them to click on.I have now come round to making a Connect 4 game in the exact same solution, once again i am using empty labels for the users to select which slots to place there counters. However when i select "transparent" as these labels back colour they still dont go transparent.Its now happening on all forms, all projects, is there another attribute that controls if a background can be transparent?

I just had a new, last-minute idea on to take on a task, so I am running to StackExchange for quick help.
What I want to do is execute a series of methods right in a row, each in their own threads. I want the application to wait until all of these threads are completed, after which the program will resume. It also has to use managed threading (thread pool).
What quick examples could you provide to help me along the way? If it's too complex, what things should I know about so that I can Google it on my own?

I have a main thread which is designed to be a batch processor - it spawns a series of 'child' threads from a loop (which can vary in terms of the no of items) - see below
[Code]...
However, each of the 'child' threads could take anywhere from milliseconds to about a minute to process - depending on the complexity of each calculation. There may also be a large number of child threads - e.g 100s. Creating large numbers of child threads is not efficient. I therefore want some way to effectively queue each child thread (and cancel if the process is taking too long to complete). Autoevents seems like one way of doing this, but the only examples I can find seem to assume there are two different processes on seperate threads, not one process being repeated.

i have developed a windows application whose interface has multiple picture boxes panels with background images for rich look and also a usercontrol which contains a gridview and WPF scrollbar in an element host. All these controls are placed in one panel (this is also having a background image) which is equal to the size of windows form. The reason for placing all these controls in the panel is that the window can be resized, if needed, allowing scrollbars.
Due to these large number of controls in which some of them have transparent backgrounds loaded in a large panel having background image, the window is flickering when moved or any other application's window is moved over it.

I am making an application which has a form that I have set a notify icon for, I load this form at startup and then hide it. Then I have another form that the user can load (from the notify icon) which loads and runs a sub on another thread using the following
Dim d As New MyDeligate(AddressOf ProcessReminders)
d.BeginInvoke(AddressOf RemindersComplete, Nothing)
When this is executed another notifyicon appears, and then when the form closes it stays. I also notice that the memory usage remains higher than when the form loads. How do I prevent this, I am not sure but I believe that by creating the new thread it recreates the initial form and then it is not destroyed.

Hi
I have a thread that it calling many processes.
While the processes are executed (spends some seconds or minutes in completing all the tasks) I show form "Please wait to complete all tasks".
But one of these processes I have to show a form because the user has to choose a few data. But the problem is that this form is showed minimized.
Already I have tried to show it maximized and to bring it to the front but it does not do it.
how I can show this form to front and maximized?
My actual code is:
f= New frmLPlantillas
f.WindowState = FormWindowState.Maximized
f.BringToFront()
If f.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then
value1= f.xxxx
value2= f.zzzzz
value3= f.aaaa
value4= f.bbbbbb
Else
Return False
Exit Function
End If
Thanks in advance.

When multithreading in VB, if you close the form while different threads are running, the process itself will not end. Is there a way I can force all threads to end, or end the process like in the Task Manager, when the form is closed?

I have a slight problem With an enumaration of child controls on a form. The following code will not get but about have the controls that are on the form. The controls show that the count is correct but when it goes through the loop it skips over some of the controls. If you run it through the enumeration two or three times it will get all the controls a few at a time. The solution uses two forms, one that has the controls and the other that labels are made and displayed on. The Tx is just a index to add a number to the label.name and rename the label. So each label is identified seperately. This works for all the the controls that are seen in the for each loop.

The problem I have is in the last few lines of code as I'm not really sure how to access the text boxes contained within the tab controls (of which there are many tabs and many text boxes).
This is the closest I've got but I am getting an "option strict on disallows late binding" error on the tabCtl in the following line.

Inside a form, I would like to display a pdf file which is already available in my resources (template file "untitled"). In this pdf file, I have some fields which get their values from some texboxes in another form. My aim is, when the user triggers the button to call this form, it should insert the values inside the pdf file and display the output pdf inside the form.I have written the code to an extend but could not finish it myself after my many trials... Now here are the two things I cannot manage:I can use a directory to read the template pdf "untitled1.pdf". But my aim is to use the file inside my resources. can save the output file in a directory but this is not I want to do. I want to display the output pdf.
