Using Settings To Load Different Configurations?

May 12, 2009

I currently use a Configuration.xml file to store the various preferences and settings of my application. I'd like to continue using this but allow my different users to "load" individual XML files...

To do this, I imagine I can the My.Settings to identify the location of the appropriate file. Reading the docs, it seems that I need to use the .Save method after making any changes to my settings but I'm observing that changes are persisting, regardless of not doing this... what am I doing "wrong"?

.net - Rename Visual Studio Solution Configurations?

Apr 2, 2012

I have a VB project which I'm trying to configure with three build configurations.I've successfully created the build configurations, but I decided the names I was using weren't descriptive enough so I went to Configuration Manager -> <Edit...> -> Rename and renamed them.

This renamed the configurations in the Configuration Manager.I then went to do some conditional compilation testing using #If CONFIG = but it failed.Checking deeper, it turns out that the values returned by CONFIG are the original names not the new names.Checking My Project -> Compile -> Configuration I can see that the names shown in that ComboBox are also the old names.

So, even though I have "renamed" my configurations in Configuration Manager, they're not being renamed on all levels.I can get around this by recreating these configurations with their intended names but that's about as bass ackwards a solution as I can think of. Is there some method of renaming configurations that actually works or is this just the way MS intended this to."work"?

ListBox Load Settings From String Collection?

Feb 26, 2009

I'm trying to create a favorite box in my web browser using this code in Favorites.vb

Public Class favorites
Private Sub btnAdd_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAdd.Click

[Code]....

Now I have it so when you click the add button it will put the URL in the string FavList, and place the URL in Listbox1 however I have no idea how to save it, and load it.

So the next time the user opens it, it will have the URL in the string and URL box, so when they click the URL in listbox1 it will redirect the WebBrowser. I think it works like that already I just need to know how to save it, and load it.

App Not Load User Scope Settings When In Starts By Registry Run Key?

Aug 17, 2010

Why does my app not load the saved user scope my.settings when it starts by way of the registry run key? This key starts programs after the user login, per microsoft. So why does it not load the saved user settings? The program does start up, but all the areas on the form where saved user scope settings should be, are the default values (mostly empty strings). (The user scope settings are there if I start my program by the desktop shortcut

I've looked, searched, posted to other forums, but can't seem to find an answer.

C# - Load The Settings The User Used The Last Time When The Program Starts

Jul 18, 2009

My typical application has a couple of textboxes, checkbuttons, radiobuttons, and so. I always want to load the settings the user used the last time when the program starts, and also want to save the settings as the users clicks "Save settings" or closes the application. When the user attempts to save the settings, I'll have to check each of the controls for input errors (sometimes they have to have a max length, other times only caps, other times other things, there isn't a rule for them all, everytime it'll be different), and only if everything OK i'll let him save the options. If there is something wrong, no option is saved and my error-control provider will pop up a description of the input type info that should be put in that control.

I've been designing this from scratch for all my projects, but it's being a pain to do it. So I'd thought maybe now was the time to do some library to help me. I thought initially that maybe it'd be a good idea to have all the controls on my form that are going to be part of this save/load process to have an attribute associated with them, something like this [Code]

Game Programming :: Getting A Highscore To Save And Load Using My.Settings

May 20, 2011

I've tried to implement this highscore saving feature, so that when my application closes, the highscore saves within the my.settings storage function, and when my program loads up again, the same highscore loads up from this file. atm, it works ONLY within the application (I can close forms and it's still there, but if i end the program it resets to 0 next time it's loaded).it's basically 2 lines of code..1 for saving and 1 for loading..is this the best way to save a highscore for a game? I was initially thinking of making a database and linking it to that, but apprantly it's easier with the My.settings. even thought of using stremawriter but it's more uneccessary work over my.settings.[code]

Get The "Solution Configurations List Box" Back?

Only it isn't on the standard toolbar anymore nor is it under the add remove buttons pulldown menu.

It was there when I installed VS 2005 Beta and I didn't remove it but it seems to have disappeared on it's own and I can't see where to get it back and under the projects property window it isn't available and no where in help does it say how to get the listbox back to selct Debug or Release?

My.Settings.Upgrade Stopped Preserving Settings After Visual Studio And Framework Were Upgraded?

Jan 13, 2011

The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings. However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:

ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb

where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object

Jan 14, 2009

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

VS 2008 Settings Are Read From App.config Instead Of Settings-file

Oct 30, 2009

I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.
