Using Array With Unknown Number Of Items?

Apr 7, 2011

I'm trying switch from using arraylist to arrays. Seams like arrays are not as easy to use when you don't know the size of the array.

Is it possible to use an array without having to specify the size of the array like in this example?

Changing Unknown Number Of Label Captions Using Unknown Length Array

Oct 22, 2009

Using Access 2003 and VB code, I have created a form with a number of labels. The labels will display an employee's names. I have named the labels name1, name2, name3...etc. Using an ADO data set and DCount I have determined the number of names in an Access table (the number of names can vary). What I want to do is for each record in succession to pick the first name and surname from the data set , combine them into a full name (this part has been successful), and then set the full name into the label caption in succession. Example: full name 1 into name1, full name 2 into name2, full name 3 into name3... until all names appear as labels on the form.

I created a counter to and a variable to increment the label number but when I address the caption property of the variable containing the new label (e.g. name1, name2..etc.) it throws an errer at runtime. Here is the code:

VS 2010 - How To Add Unknown Number Of Items To ListView

Mar 14, 2010

I'm gonna add x number of items to a listbox in form #2 form form #1. When I click the button it opens Form #2 and then I tried this code (which makes the form freeze):
Dim qwe As Integer = 1
Do Until qwe = regKey.GetValue("Count") + 1
PrMaker.ListView1.Items.Add(regKey.GetValue(qwe))
qwe = qwe + 1
Loop
The regKey.GetValue("Count") is a registry key which contains a integer (unknown). What is wrong, or is there another, better way, of doing this?

Get The Size Of The Array And Not The Number Of Items In It?

Nov 3, 2009

When you use array.length you get the size of the array and not the number of items in it.

For example:

Dim MyArray(10) as String
MyArray(0) = "Potato's"
MyArray(1) = "with"
MyArray(2) = "salt!"
MyArray.Length will return 11

How do I get the number 3? I am creating a class library so it's kinda hard to keep testing all kinds of methods until I get the right one .

VS 2010 - How To Get Number Of Items In Each Column In 2 Dim Array

Mar 14, 2011

When you have a single dim array, you get number of items in with simple Ubound(array). What is the most efficient way, to get number of items in each "column" in 2 dimensional array? My code (part):
.NET
Public Shared LoopStock()() As LoopStockDef
Public Structure LoopStockDef
Dim EntID As Int32
Dim LoopNo As Int16
Dim LoopType As String
Dim loopStPtX As Int32
[Code] .....

You can't Ubound multidimensional array as you can do with single dimensional array, as the second dimension can have different number of items in each column (DimX in the following table)

DimX | (1) | (2) | (3) | (4) | (5) |
-----------------------------------------------
DimY | | | | | |
(1) | 45 | 41 | 15 | 48 | 49 |
(2) | 35 | 26 | 98 | 15 | 31 |
(3) | 12 | 23 | 36 | 69 | |
(4) | 88 | | 26 | 28 | |
(5) | 74 | | 89 | | |
(6) | 36 | | 25 | | |

If you do
.NET
UBound(LoopStock, 2)

You get size of 2nd dimension, not number of items in the table for particular column. The best solution which comes to my mind is to define another array, a multidimensional counter, like
.NET
LoopStockDims() As Int16
And count every added item for each column. Is this the best way?

Enum ToString Returns An Unknown Number?

Jul 16, 2009

I built a simple vb.net winforms project that pings IP addresses and logs the results. It works fine on most machines I've tried it on. I log the status result of the ping System.Net.NetworkInformation.IPStatus) by using the IPStatus.tostring method.

Normally this returns a text result such as "Success" or "TimedOut"Yesterday, on one machine it returned "65" ...which is not one of the enum values. I have a feeling it might be a combination of values. I ran some test code:

Dim status As System.Net.NetworkInformation.IPStatus
status = Net.NetworkInformation.IPStatus.Success
MsgBox(status.ToString)
Which returns "Success"And this: status = Net.NetworkInformation.IPStatus.BadDestination Or Net.NetworkInformation.IPStatus.BadHeader MsgBox(status.ToString)

Which returns "11050" I suspect the "65" I saw was the result of some combination of enum values. Is there any way I can change the code in my second example to show the text names of both values? That is... any way I can see ALL values in this variable?

Sql - LINQ Or DataTable When Number Of Fields Unknown

Feb 25, 2010

I have a dynamic query which returns a DataTable. This DataTable will contain a varying number of columns depending on the selection used in the query. I want an efficient way of filtering the records in the DataTable.

For Example The DataTable contains columns : A, B, C and D

I need to query this data at serveral points in my program. At some point I may need records where A=10 and C>40. At another point I may need records where A<10 and D=90 etc.etc. The selects are dymanmic, I do not now what Columns or values are needed until the code is executing.

I could simply use a DataTable Filter and build the selection string dynamically. I have no problem with this. However I was wondering if using LINQ would be more applicable. I am completely new to LINQ and would like to use it but don't know its capabilities.

(At present I am using a DataTable but in future this may change to a collection of Objects)

Storing Data With Unknown Length In Array

Jan 15, 2010

I have a piece of code written in Visual Basic:

Dim n As Double, i As Integer
n = 4
Dim Ramp_length(1 To 4) As Double
For i = 1 To n
Ramp_length(i) = Cells(13 + i, 5)
'Cells(65 + i, 7) = Ramp_length(i)'
Next i

Is there a way I can reproduce the result without declaring the array with a "fixed" length? I eventually want the code to read off a column of data with unknown length and store it in an array of equal or smaller length so it can be altered.

Get The Number Of Items Or Size Of Items In The Recycle Bin?

Dec 14, 2011

I've got some old code of mine that I'm going back to and updating a little bit. On one part of it I need to check if there are any items in the recycle bin or not.

This is the code I was using to accomplish this:

vbcode

Private Declare Function SHQueryRecycleBin Lib "shell32.dll" Alias "SHQueryRecycleBinA" (ByVal pszRootPath As String, ByRef pSHQueryRBInfo As SHQUERYRBINFO) As Long
Private Structure ULARGE_INTEGER

[Code]....

The msgbox and end is just in there for debugging purposes. This always returns all 0s, even when I know that there is something in the recycle bin.

Check Number Of Items In Listbox?

Jan 17, 2009

I have a listbox, textbox, and a button. every time I push the button, an item from the listbox is put into the textbox. when the button is pushed again, it grabs the next item in order and puts it into the textbox. so on and so on until it gets to the last item. once I get to the last item it keeps repeating the last item over and over again. SO what I was wondering is how do I get a messagebox or some sort of checker to tell me when it has moved the last item from my listbox to the textbox?? PS textbox2.text=0 and every time the button is pushed another number is added to the value of textbox2.text. so basically if I could figure out how to grab the value of lines at any given time in listbox I could call a msgbox up!! here is the code I am currently using[code]...

Array Dimensions - Error Message 'ReDim' Cannot Change The Number Of Dimensions Of An Array?

Oct 20, 2011

I'm upgrading my VB6 project to VB.NET and I found one of the problem below relating to dimensional array.Here's my VB6 coding :

Private Function ConvertMatrixToBase0(ByVal MyMat() As Double) As Double()
Dim i, j As Long
Dim ConvMat() As Double[code.]...

When i port it over to VB.NET, i encountered error message 'ReDim' cannot change the number of dimensions of an array. for the line highlighted in red. And I suspect that VB.NET need to always define the exact dimension of the array during the declaration. But for the function above, for the array of 'MyMat()', I do not know what is the exact dimension every time it runs, and that is why i need to check the dimension of the array.My question is do we have any solution in dealing unknown dimension array in VB.NET? As in VB6, we can just define Array() instead of Array (,) in VB.NET.

.net - Implement A List(Of) With A Maximum Number Of Items?

I'm trying to figure out a good way of implementing a List(Of) that holds a maximum number of records.

I have a List(Of Int32) - it's being populated every 2 seconds with a new Int32 item.

I want to store only the most current 2000 items.How can I make the list hold a maximum of 2000 items, then when the 2001'th item is attempted to be added, the List drops the 2000'th item (resulting in the current total being 1999).

Thing is, I need to make sure I'm dropping only the oldest item and adding a new item into the List.
