VB 2010 And Access (Multiple Datasets And Adapters)

Nov 24, 2010

Im currently making a program. It loads data from database fields into an combo box. Everything works so far, It just seems to be a mess. Do i need to have all the datasets and data adapters? or can i get away with just using 1 of each. It seems like im doing it wrong, and although it works it seems like a difficult and messy way of doing it.

Also i would like to assign the firshermenID to a variable depending on the fisherman name that is selected in the combo box. When button is pressed: id = fishermanID of the current fisherman (cmbFisherman.text)

Table Adapters And Updating Multiple Tables?

Apr 21, 2011

Using; - vb2008 Express, data on ACCESS 2003, objective; - to update a separate table not on the original query. From what i have gathered i need to add a second table adapter to make the changes to a related field in another table. Since i already have the 1st table adapter the second does not appear as easy as the second (dragn the data set over).

So i suppose i need to create the second table adapters programmatically? [URL]..I see that because they are not nested they need to each be declared.. right? If so that is where my issue lies. I'm having a problem with how to declare them both now that there must be two.

Access Database - Setting All Bindings And Table Adapters

Feb 24, 2009

I have a project that I used the 'Connect to Database' tool to set all the bindings and table adapters, etc. Currently the database is housed in the same directory as the exe. I was asked if I could have the database location be a dynamic value. My question is when you set up a project to work with a database using the 'Connect to Database' tool, how can you change its location?

I found this setting:
ASRDBConnectionString
But its read only.
Within that setting is text that says: DataDirectory
So thought that might be a variable to change somewhere....but can't find it.

How To Code Multiple Datasets

Oct 16, 2009

I have a report where I need the same data, but for four separate date ranges. Currently this data is based on one month, so it's just one dataset. But now I am trying to do this with four separate datasets, where each one is filtered on each of the four date ranges. I setup my WHILE loop to loop thru all four dates. But I'm having trouble now with distinct naming these datasets. Is this the best way to do this? It looks like if I used multiple datatables for one dataset, I'd have to define each datatable column. Here is my current dataset commandstring

Addding Multiple Databases (datasets) Into One VB Project

Jun 28, 2011

I have a dilemma. The program I"m trying to complete is one VB project with three (3) forms. The first form will act as a menu dialog box. The other two forms will have a dataset (database) on each form. The first form will have a button when clicked it will pull up form 2 and the second button when clicked will bring up form 3. What I add the dataset to form 2 everything is fine. I can see my tableadapter, dataset and so on. Now, when I add the second dataset (database) to form 3, I loose my, dataset and so on. It doesn't appear on any of the two forms (in designer)tableadapter.

Multiple DataAdapters - Changing One Dataset On A Form Cause All Of The Datasets To Show Changes?

Jul 12, 2010

I have a form with multiple DataSets (filled by multiple Stored Procedures) and corresponding DataAdapters. Associated with the DataApters are commands for UPDATE, INSERT......... Before using the DA Update I am using 'If DSxyz.HasChanges(). It seems that when I make a change anywhere on the form affecting 1 dataset, all of the datasets show this to be true. Why should changing one dataset on a form cause all of the datasets to show changes?

I've been having a problem adding a record to an Access database using datasets and da.update etc. I'm trying to create a simple program that displays the records of a database table in a series of text boxes. I've managed to get my next and previous buttons working correctly and my update button works correctly too. The problem occurs when I try to add a new record. I keep getting a "Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement" whenever I click my add button.

VS 2008 - Application That Uses An Access Database To Fill Datasets

May 13, 2010

I have an application that uses an access database to fill datasets. My problem is that I have three related tables, when I add a new users to the customers table The parts table fills with data saved in the database with a cust_id of -1.

I discovered that this is caused by adding a part, not saving it and deleting the customer. I Can add code to stop the user from deleting a customer that has parts but I do not have access to the live database to delete the record that are incorrect.

Is there something I can do to delete the rows that have an id of -1 on the load statment?

VS 2010 - TaskFactory And Datasets

Aug 24, 2011

I have a taskfactory application that generates new tasks where a task is running a project exe file that involves a lot of classes. Part of the task process involves declaring a dataset and adding a single datatable to the dataset which is then populated with content from results of a sql query. This datatable is then used in the next class and involves iterating through the table and deleting the rows it has already used. When initiating a new task I assume that it will declare its own datatable and dataset but not sure if this will work.

VS 2010 Atomic Transactions With DataSets?

Apr 18, 2011

So I'm developing a program were, given some data by the user, the prorgam inserts some records into a database. To insert individual records in different tables I use either the standard INSERT method provided by the Table Data Adapter or a custom Insert Method when I want to insert something slightly differently.Sometimes the user would press a button and an operation where different records in different related tables are inserted. Since each Insert is handled individually for by the DataAdapters of each table, how can I manage to bring the whole thing to an atomic transaction way? I mean, let's say for example the User inserts a new Document in the system, the document has one or many Editions. How could i do something like: if the document was not created properly, then do not insert the editions.

VS 2010 Typed Datasets Vs Entity Framework

Aug 19, 2011

I just read this post url...Post #2 by jmc states indicates the use of Entity Framework instead of typed datasets.when jmc says something I usually pay attention. I have a large app that I've been converting from VB6 to .Net and I've used mainly typed datasets. It's a single user app that uses an Access database. I'm have no problems retrieving the data from a table or multiple tables and I'm very happy with its preformance. Is it worth scapping what I've done and learn how to use Entity Framework? I should add that I'm near the end of my programming career not the beginning.

VS 2010 Typed Datasets Are Created At Design Time Only And Not Dynamically

Jan 20, 2012

In a typical session with the program I'm writing, the user needs to be able to access the data in 1 to 500 (maybe) tables (but always only one table at a time). Up to now I've been creating these single table datasets dynamically, as and when required.I've now come across the distinction between typed and untyped datasets (where typed seems to be the recommended option). It seems, though, that typed datasets are created at design time only and not dynamically. Is this correct? Are all of my dynamically created datasets therefore untyped?

VS 2010 - Can't Access Multiple Panels - Make Labels Merged In Panels

May 8, 2012

I'm trying to make custom ListBox with some graphics. Base is ItemCollection - each item contains Panel, 2x label and 2x picturebox. What each panel have to do:

- Change backcolor on MouseEnter and set color back when MouseLeave occurs.
- On MouseDown(LMB) - Panel stays "selected" - different color.

Problem: I can't access multiple panels at a time(and I need to), just one via sender as in function. Of course, I can do it hacky way, but I want to do it effective and regular. Is ItemCollection the right solution or should I do it just like an array of panels? Also I want them in one "box", ItemCollection is good for it.

Second "problem": I need to make labels "merged" in panels, when i MouseEnter them(labels), background color on that panel sets to my default color. when i MouseClick them(labels), nothing happens (need to "select" parent panel). It can be again fixed with hacky way, just disable labels - but then the colors of labels are unchangeable.

Filling Dataset With Adapters?

Jun 23, 2010

ok normally when i fill data i do it this way adapter.Fill(dataset, "table1") However instead of using Strings, i prefer using enums so for example i have:

public enum Tables
T1
T2
end Enum

but since adapter.fill does not provide an "integer" argument when i add i had to convert it to a string as such adapter.Fill(dataset, cstr(Tables.T1)). i find this "dirty" and was wondering if there is a better fix

Enable/disable NIC (network Adapters) ?

Aug 9, 2011

I want to write a small program to just enable/disable two network adapters. I searched over google and I found a few C# codes but didn't understand anything. I heard something called WMI. It seems they are other ways like enabling registry (which sounds wierd for me) or using command lines.

I really don't know which way should be used althought I didn't find any code to those either. something that works in win xp & vista & seven.

Because user want two switch between two NIC by enable one and disabling another one, I think I should first get a list of network adapters, then let user specify. I know It can be done easily by going to the network settings directly and do it by right clicking. But they want to do it through a program with single click.

Edit: I was able to get a list of adapters using WMI, Here is the page If someone wanted to take a look.
