VS 2005 - Allow User To Resize Columns Of DataGridView
Oct 8, 2009
I'm trying to allow users to resize columns of my datagridview, but it's not working. I have this line:
DataGridView1.AllowUserToResizeColumns = True
I want users to be able to resize columns the same way they would if in excel.

VB6 had a feature for it's datagrid where the user could use the mouse to drag the row divider in a datagrid and when the user released the mouse button, all the rows in the datagrid would resize to match the one the user resized (Excel does the same thing if you have all rows highlighted).

Because I have been trying for ages, and each time it returns to default. Under the 'Properties' window, I have taken this image to show what I have done. I have also tried resizing it as it is running, but the next time it is opened it returns to default size.[URL]

How can I resize my Form and my dataGridView to fit my user screen?

Recently I was working on a project that included several DataGridView objects. With one, I dynamically create columns based on the types of data being displayed. I established a baseline size (so each column would initially display the same width), and a minimum size. AutoSizeMode was set to None. I knew that I wanted the new column to be resizable by the user, so I put in code to that effect:
Resizable = True
When I tested the code, the columns were not resizable. I traced the code, looking for anything that would reset the property Resizable to False. Nothing. I commented out the line with the
Resizable = True command;
The columns were resizable after this. At this point, I remembered that Resizable is defaulted to true. But I still did not understand why the columns were not resizable after setting the property to True.
I did some experiments. If you create a new DatagridViewTextBoxColumn, add it to the
DatagridView, and then set the Resizable property to True, the result (via Watch) is False {2}. If you do the same, but set the Resizable property to False, the result is True {1}.
This is disturbing (and confusing) on at least two levels. The fact that the exact opposite boolean value is passed in. The fact that {2} is False. It was always my understanding that VB treated
{0} as False, and
Any other value as True.

I have a datagridview that is bound to a datatable. When the form is displayed, the column headers have no sort glyphs and the columns will not sort.
I don't see a property on the form that controls column sorting - at least not one that's obvious. This is an area of the code that another developer wrote originally, so maybe there's something going on that I'm not aware of.

I have an unbound datagridview with a whole bunch of columns.I need to sort based on 4 columns, the first three are simple strings, the fouth is a date string (which in itself presents a problem, since it wants to sort lexically but I need them in date order).

When user clicks on a button on my form, it sends the datagridview on that form to another class that [basically] does a bunch of stuff and shows a dialog with a print preview. Everything works perfectly fine, except that if a user switches around columns it won't print them in that current order. For example, if user moves the LastName column before FirstName column, then it should print in that order, but it prints in the column order that the datagridview was originally loaded. The dgv1, is the datagridview that was originally loaded, not the current one. [Code]

All fields from my class objects are added to the columns collection of DataGridViews, when the forms or custom controls that contain them are viewed within the VS 2005 designer. I haven't been able to figure out how to stop the designer from auto-adding all of the fields found within the bindingsource object.

I have a datagridview that I'm populating from a SProc. The data coms back fine and is presenting in the DGV without any trouble, but I don't like the order the data is being returned in.A long solution might be to modify the SProc to return the data in a different order, but I prefer to handle this on the UI for simplicity. Also, I know the user can re-order but that presents a specific poblem in the way the columns are structured.Is there a way to programmatically change the order at runtime?Here's the ode I have on the UI. If you need to see the adapter class also, please let me know and I'll present it, too.
Code:
Private Sub UpcomingInspections()
AddHandler mAdapter.ErrorOccured, AddressOf HandleDataError
[code]....

I got a very simple question regarding resizing listview columns. I have a form with a listview anchored to it (top, bottom, left, right). The form is resizable and the user will be able to resize the listview columns manually. However, I need the listview to resize its columns automatically when the form is resized (especially when its maximized).
But, I don't want all the columns to resize, only the ones I choose. For example, the listview will have 6 columns in total (0-5). When the user resizes or maximizes the window, I need only columns 2 and 4 (or columns 3 and 5 or columns 1 and 5) to resize. Now, I have come up with two pieces of code as listed below.
Code Part A: The following code only resizes one column. When the form is maximized, only the column ID provided will resize and fill the rest of the control. It works perfectly but I need to be able to resize multiple columns (as explained above):
Public Sub lvResizeSingleCol(ByVal resizeColumn As Integer, ByVal listViewName As ListView)
Dim w As Integer = 0
For column As Integer = 0 To listViewName.Columns.Count - 1
If column <> resizeColumn Then
w += listViewName.Columns(column).Width
[Code] .....

I am trying to figure the best way to programmatically re-size table column headers in ReportViewer.Basically, my current resolution is the following: ColumnWidth = Header Caption_CharacterCount * 0.32...Where 0.32 is an estimated width of a typical character using my current font size.The issue is that the width leaves a lot of whitespace for longer captions.The more characters a caption has, the more whitespace I end up with.The issue with estimating this way is that not all characters are the same width. A good example would the the "I" character, which takes up less screen width than the rest of the alphabet.[code]

I've got code to allow the user to import an image to the document they have opened, however right now, the image displays at it's default size, and well, if it's a large image, the document stretches and looks like crap. I want the user to be able to select the image after they insert it, and have the handles show up on the corners so they can resize it, and would also like to have it allow them to move it around the document if possible. I am converting my company's VB6 program over to VB.net and I have hit another stupid little roadblock.
The old program had a ListView docked to the left side of the application screen. The user could place the cursor over the right portion of the ListView, the cursor would turn into the SizeWE arrows, then they could drag it, which would resize the ListView.
I am trying to recreate this. As far as I can tell there is no Property called "Resizable," or at least nothing is popping out to me. I do not believe that it is being done in the code.
Is there a property I am missing? If not, is there an easy way to do this within the code? (ie. is there a event that would make my life easier)
I am using Visual Studio 2008.
Edit: I see how how it was done in the previous program (you always seem to find it once you ask the question, don't you?). The old program had a invisible picture that was only a few pixels wide that when hovered over would change the cursor to SizeWE. You could then drag that invisible picture and that would hit an event that would then change the size of the ListView. This seems rather convoluted. My question still stands: Is there a better way to handle this dragging and resizing?

I'm trying to figure out how to resize a form on load to fit to the user's screen. Many of my users are on laptops, or split screens between laptop and monitor..I remember in VB6, it was something like form.height = screen.height (or something of the sort)... but I can't find this functionality in VB.NET 2008. I'm also trying to wrap everything (multiple screens/forms) into one app, so I wanted to know if anyone was aware of any tutorials on form parent/child relationships... I don't want to keep opening and hiding forms individually without having them packaged in one work area....

I have a Mdi form and I need to put a control on the form which the user can resize. Now I need a container can be dragged by user to increase it's size. The split container will not work in my case as I have childforms and stuff. I want a container whose size can be increased by dragging it on one side.

I want to write a vb program to allow user to draw rectangle. User can click on a point as starting position and drag on the screen. A rectangle is drawn with the current mouse position and the starting position. The user then release the mouse as end position. When the rectangle is drawn, user can resize the rectangle by drag the border of the rectangle.
