VS 2005 Outlook Type Control
Jun 23, 2009
I need to develop an inbox/outbox/sent items type interface and I believe that copying the outlook view would make it much easier for my users.I just can't seem to find any control for VB.NET that copies the feel of Outlook.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 on Windows XP.When I drop a new DataGridView into my Windows Forms, and try to make 1 of the columns a checkBox, VS2005 gives me TWO of each columnType choice:
TextBox
TextBox
CheckBox
CheckBox
[code]....
Is that normal? Should I use "CheckBox type 1" or "type 2"?Also,When I make 1 of my columns a "checkBox", and then try to use it, the checkBox seems keep turning itself back ON.I turn it ON, and then click on a different column or row, and the checkbox stays ON, like it should.But if I turn the checkBox OFF, and then click on a different column or row, the checkbox magically turns itself back ON. I can't find anything in my code that says "turn it back on". And I've never connected it directly to any data source.

When writing some Outlook code in VS2005, I came across a situation that, to me, does not make any sense. For reference, the version of Outlook running on this machine is Outlook 2003.The program I'm writing is designed to iterate through the emails in the inbox, to identify certain types of emails based on their subjects and bodies, and then to generate new emails based on the existing ones. However, the problem that I'm having is with simply iterating through the collection of items that comes from the Inbox folder. Specifically, what happens is that this line consistently fails on items that should be processed:
Current_Item = CType(The_Items.Item(Counter), Outlook.MailItem)

I am using Access 2007 as an automation server for a custom form in Outlook 2007. I am trying to use the records in an Access table as a rowsource for a Outlook combobox. I have been debugging it quite a bit; I can tell that I successfully grab a recordset and can tell that they are the correct values. The only problem is when I try to add an item to my combobox (cboCategory).I checked the properties of the additem function and it expects a variant, so that's what I give it. However at runtime, it gives me a type mismatch error.

I'm having trouble coding some new items into a program of mine. The program loops through you Inbox looking for emails that are UNREAD and have a certain subject line. The subject line in this case, is going to search for: "FAX TO: ###########" (actually, it just searches for FAX TO). Next step, I need the selected email to be FORWARDED to the fax number in the subject line - including attachments. In my code - I've already got the message selected - but I can't figure out how to programmatically forward it? I need explicit code help with the following:
1) Check to make sure there are 10 digits in the original subject line. If not - bail out and ignore that message.
2) Trim the subject line and save the phone number to a string
3) Forward the message (plus attachments) to the [URL]
I'm assuming I'll need to create a new Outlook.MailItem, but I'm not sure if I need to. Is there just some code I'm missing so I don't have to COPY the contents of the current MailItem to a new one.

I need to enumerate all the items in an email inbox. However, this code fails
For Each MI As Outlook.MailItem In folderToProcess.Items
'Console.WriteLine("Subject:" + vbTab + MI.Subject)
Console.WriteLine(MI.Subject)
Next
It fails whenever it comes across an item that ISN'T an email (e.g. a meeting request). I've spent the last hour or so trying to find a way of enumerating every item no matter its type. So far all I've come up with is to use the base Object type and then work from there but that's Late Binding and I'd prefer to avoid it if possible.
Has anyone come across this problem before? How can I determine what type of Outlook item it is during enumeration?

I would like to automatically create an Outlook rule (move email containing something in subject to folder xyz) but dont know how to achieve this. Of course I can create the rule and export it to a .rwz file. This file can be imported manually, but how can I import it automatically?
Can I import a rule through my VSTO 2005 Outlook (2003) Addin? Or can I create the rule from within this addin?

I'm getting an "Unhandled exception of type'System.MissingMemberException' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll" error in this line of
oAppt = oApp.CreateItem(Outlook.OlItemType.olAppointmentItem)
The error message has additional info of:
Public member 'CreateItem' on type 'MailItem' not found.
Code in trouble is:
Private Sub Startup()
Dim oApp As Outlook.Application = New Outlook.Application()
Dim oNS As Outlook.NameSpace = oApp.GetNamespace("MAPI")
SubTwo(oNS, oApp)
End Sub
[CODE]...
The last line of pasted code is where the problem occurs. It was working previously but I'm trying to "modularize" my application by breaking the program into more manageable sub routines... this is a stripped down version of the code I have.

I believe that this is in the correct forum due to it being about creating an interface item, but if I am wrong then let me know and I'll try and bring this thread to the attention of the mods to be moved to a more appropriate forum. I am currently trying to create a generic navigation control with a similar style to the outlook navigation bar. I have figured out how I would be able to dynamically create the bottom part where you select the menu option, but I'm struggling to figure out how I would be able to create the top part, which can contain any user control that the developer would want.
So basically what I'm trying to figure out is, is there a way to allow for a developer to add controls to a specific area of your user control?If there is a way of achieving that then if anyone knows how to do this;In ASP.Net you have the login controls and with one of them, you are able to have different views depending on whether the user who is viewing the web page is logged in or not. Is there a way of achieving this in VB.Net for a user control that could be set up so that I could have the developer able to switch the view in the designer to show them the view for when a specific navigation option has been selected.
The one thing that I have thought of that could possibly cause a problem is having the capability of knowing when one of the user controls has been clicked, while I haven't figured this out exactly, I believe I should be able to achieve this by having an event for the navigation user control that provides the developer a reference to the control.
While I would hope that I have explained what I'm thinking well, its before my first coffee of the morning so I might have missed out some detail which would help someone to help me if I have then please let me know and I'll provide any details required.Also if what I'm envisioning is Pie in the sky, then let me know and I'll just have to make a base which I would just have to make a more bespoke system.

I have a program in VB.Net that receives mails from Outlook, extracts attachments and inserts the attachments into a table through a query. I would like to put the query/queries in a Try/Catch block, but cannot do so as Outlook exceptions cannot be caught, and it gives me an error, and unless I put a very specific exception, I cannot catch it. Is there a workaround?
Edit:
Try
Catch ex As Exception
End Try
Exception is underlined and when I hover on it, it says: "Catch cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not in 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'". This is affecting all my other code which I'd like to put into a Try/Catch block.

I work for a somewhat large company.There are about 160 Windows XP Pro users. We are still using Microsoft Office 2000 for the most part.We have upgraded some users to Office 2003. We are not using Microsoft Exchange.I have to export every users' Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2003 Contacts into an Excel or CSV file every 6 months as a way of backing the Outlook Address Contacts.Currently I am doing this by physically going to every pc and manually exporting the contacts.This is a large pain.I am trying to find out if I can use or create a Visual Basic 2008 Express program or script that will export the contacts from Outlook and save it as an Excel or CSV file.The name of the file should be the same as the computers net name.It should be saved in the same location, on the network, each time.I am new to programming and new to VB 2008 Express.I do not know or have any code to start with.

I'm working on an application that takes certain outlook email messages, saved as text files, and loads data from them into a database. It would be better if I could read the messages from the inbox directly into my app without the user having to save them as text files. I've searched the web and every example I find is from 2003 or earlier and is using VB6. I'd like to read both Outlook and Outlook Express Inboxes. Can someone either provide me with the code to do this or a good "recent" link with a tutorial?
