VS 2005 Running External Program "out Of Process"
Jul 15, 2010
I'm trying to run the "Shell" command in a VB.NET project, to execute an external file. For example: Shell("c: empmyfile.txt").
For some reason this throwing a "file not found" exception, yet the file is there. Now I've looked around and found that others recommend using the "System.Diagnostics.Process" method, which does work, however I don't want the file to run in-process, which is what that does.
I want to run the file out of process, so that when my program ends, the executed program keeps running independently. Hence my attempt to use Shell() but it refuses to work.
Is there another way besides Shell() to run a file out of process?

What I'm wanting to do is gonna sound pretty strange. I play a game called Wonderland Online. Usually while playing, I will have between 3-4 instances of the game going at the same time, each instance running a different character. Also, I will have open another program that I wrote that helps me figure out what I need to manufacture a certain item in the game. The running game is an 800x600 window, and I have all 5 of these windows open at once, where I am constantly moving things around, minimizing and maximizing.I want to create a app that would basically be a frame for the game. Creating the frame would not be hard, but this is the first time I have tried to get an external EXE to basically run inside of my program. Is this even possible? And if so, I would imagine I could run multiple EXEs and flip between them inside my frame. I could integrate my manufacturing program into the frame, as well as control which instance of the game is visible inside the frame.

I am trying to write a Windows Script that will allow me to monitor the following: That 2 x seperate but specific processes within Component Services "Running Processes" list are currently running and have not reset within the past hour. If I already know the PID, then I can retrieve the CreationDate (I assume which I can use to check for restarts? or is this the actual process creation/installation date) for each specific process, however if a restart occurs the PID will change and my script needs to know what the new PID is without me telling it!

I'm not asking how to exit the program( dispose() ) instead I have a program that checks if a certain process is running and if so it displays a message box, stops the process and (Should) exit the program. If the process is not detected then the program loads normally and opens an external program. My problem is that it stops the process and still runs the program. How can I fully stop the code and exit my program?

I know how to check for the version information from inside a VB2005 application:
Dim version as String= String.Format("Version {0}", My.Application.Info.Version.ToString)
That works fine. But let's say I have two applications, A and B. App A wants to find out what app B's version is. Is there a way to do that?

I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

I am using the Process.Start function to open a program based off a registry value. It works, sort of. Here is the snip of the
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Console
Imports System.Configuration
[Code]....
The program opens with the correct registry value, but the program itself does not run quite right. This program feeds into Intergraph and brings up the selected drawing, but there is a feature of intergraph that doesn't work. If I manually start ( double click ) pdsicon.exe the program works just fine. It only when I call the process that it doesn't work quite right.

i am creating a visual basic program, which acts as a very simple GUI for another program. I have built the whole Visual Basic project, but i am unable to do one part, the most important part you could say.I have a button(button1) on a form, when the button is clicked, i want it to run a program, named 'mover.exe' which is located in the SAME FOLDER that my visual basic program will run from. The directory of this folder will change. So, there are two problems..i have:
1 - to make the program run the .exe program when button1 is clicked (it also must be run with administrative privelages).
2 - to make the program always look for 'mover.exe' in the folder in which it is started from.

There are tons of examples of how to access the process environment block (PEB) from C++ code but I'm wanting to do it from VB.NET and am seriously struggling.I call NtQueryInformationProcess and get a Process_Basic_Information structure back from that which has a member named PebBaseAddress and this holds a pointer to the PEB (I have verified that this member does hold a valid pointer at runtime). The problem is that when I try to read data from the address that this pointer references I just get nothing. One important thing to mention is that it works fine if I try to use it on my own process, its just when I try and read the PEB for an external process that it gives me no data. I've enabled the SeDebugPrivilege (and confirmed it is enabled for my process in Process Explorer) but this made no difference. I've also tested it on Windows XP x86 as I'm currently testing on Windows 7 x64 but XP had the exact same issue, only sometimes the XP one would just crash completely with a memory access violation and thats the other thing, I am getting fairly inconsistent results - even on the Windows 7 machine sometimes I end up with no data but other times I get memory access violation errors, and other times I get the data for my process even when I have passed in the handle of a different process..

I am almost sure this isn't possible but it's worth an ask... We have a .NET DLL that is being called from our VB6 application. The VB6 app runs in a 32 bit process so the DLL runs in the same process (it's compiled as any cpu) Therefore when I do my ODBC Database access in the DLL is will only use a 32 bit driver, as this is what it thinks it needs (for the record the DB is Pervasive PSQL)
My problem arises when the application runs on a 64 bit machine (when only the 64 bit ODBC driver is installed) as it can't find a suitable driver to use. So is there a way to force the .NET DLL to run in a 64 bit process (compiling as x64 doesn't work because register for COM Interop is not allowed) This isn't necessarily an issue at this point in time because I can install the 32 bit driver, but at some point in the future I can imagine that 32 bit driver may not be available so I will be up the proverbial creek.

We use a 3rd party engineering application that does not expose an automation model. We can 'automate' it after a fashion by using low level Win32 API calls. I can get the Process by iterating the GetProcesses method. Is there a way to attach to the app by using the NativeWindow class?

So i want to start an application with my vb.net app and it should start as a hidden process, meaning no window and nothing in the task bar, only in the task manager ofcourse.
This is what i do
Dim fov As New Process
If CheckBox2.Checked = True Then
RichTextBox1.Text = RichTextBox1.Text & vbCrLf & "* - Launching"
fov.StartInfo.FileName = ("test.exe")
[Code]...
This does not work.. I have also tried the "fov.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = True" command which does not work either. I can live with a solution that would start the window minimized instead of totally hidden.

I am currently working in a very large solution (120+ projects). Very often, we need to find a particular form in a large desktop application, consisting of hundreds of forms. For example, we might have a requirement to edit some controls on a certain form.We don't know the form name, but we know how to navigate to the form when running the application.
In order to identify a form, we currently try to find some unique text on the form, and then search all the source files for this string. That's not very cool.Instead, I'd like to make a little tool that can identify the source file for a form, or at least the name property of the form object. We can't add code to the solution itself, so we will have to make an external exe.

I have an issue using Process.MainWindowTitle,Process.MainWindowHandle on some older VB6 applications. After Process.Start I use Process.MainWindowTitle to display in a listbox. The MainWindowTitle returned is not the Window Title but in fact the Project name of the VB6 exe.? I also store the MainWindowHandle to use the ShowWindow and SetForeGroundWindow API's. It would appear that the ShowWindow API does not work, but the SetForegroundWindow does. ie: if the VB6 app is minimized, showwindow does not restore, if it is NOT minimized setforewgroundwindow sets it to the foreground. The exact same code does work correctly for any other .net exe or notepad, only on these vb6 programs I am having a problem.

I have a program that starts another program after setting the regkeys basically the program continually syncs the calandar of outlook and another application.I set the regkeys than launch the c:sync.exe app. I have tried a simple process.start and launching the process as a thread and they both do the same thing: The other process starts and works as it should but my main program goes "White screen" or "not responding" until the process.start has exited.
I want the process.start to run in the background so if users click in my main app it responds and truly that they can access the context menu of my main app from the taskbar while the process.start is running.
