using vb.net and sql server i want to go to net work programming side. where i want to work on such applications where are network based, means to say that in a company, the application will be installed on main server and client will access them.
View 3 RepliesI have a client-side app which I am working on. As I start to enhance the app, I am starting to wonder whether or not I should be building a network side app instead. My app in its current form sits on the client side and generates some text and XML files which are stored locally on the client side. The user reads/write to these files. However, I want to start working with SQL AND the processing time of my app is starting to consume resources (i.e. time and CPU) on the client side.
Can someone provide me with some highl level feedback on what one would do to make their client-side app a network app that multiple users would have access to. I realize more detail would need to be provided in order to provide thorough answer. However at this point, I really just want to understand how a network app would differ from a client app from a programminga and deployment perspective.This is not necessarily a VB question. Howevever since I am working in VB I though I would start in this forum. Feel free to move to the appropriate forum if need be.
I have done my application programming in VB. But now i am trying to do some application related to network programming. But i am unable to find the winsock control in Visual Studio 2010.

View 4 RepliesI have a basic confusion between serial port and network TCP communication to devices.
My colleague uses a vb struct as the nice easy to read way to create a packet to send out via a serial port. Like this basic code sample below of his vb.net serial call followed at bottom by my c# tcp beginsend network call.
Can I use a struct as well to call out for my TCP network beginsend? By looking at the signature of BeginSend(Byte[] as the beginning of the signature for that method call to send data to a connected socket, I don't see myself being able to use a struct.

installed in a another system. For some quite time, the client system is sync with my system. I have updated its database, i also updated the clients executable files. I have never tough any references in the system.My question is, an error occurs occasionally which is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". I am building an internal web page which retrieves binary data from a SQL database, converts the binary to an image file, then opens the file on the clients PC.In debug mode, this works fine, because the program downloads the file successfully into a temporary directory, converts it to the image then uses System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() to launch the image file in the associated image viewing program.However, as soon as I upload it to the server, two undesired things happen:
a. The file gets saved on the servers temporary directory, instead of the client temporary directory (I kind of expected this to happen, so this wasnt much of a suprise)
b. System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() does not launch the file successfully. Nothing actually happens when it gets to this part of code, however I suspect that it is trying to launch the process on the server end, instead of the client end.
how I can get System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() to launch on the client end OR how I could get the image to just appear in the clients web browser instead?

What I would love to do is build my own custom progress indicator on the client showing how far a server side code has progressed. I figure if I could only get a JavaScript to fire and render a value of some control at pre-defined intervals while the server is working I could make it happen - but alas I'm beginning to believe that this is impossible. I need to send back the id, the old value from _1 and the new value from _0 back to the server. What is the best way to format this data so I can easily extract the data from the server side so I can easily email someone for example to let them know which textboxes have changed, what the old values were, and what the new values are
At the serverside level, I am using .NET-3.5 (VB). I know how to send the data bacl. and how to email the data, I just wanted to know how to best format the data at clientside before sending it back. I could have upto 50 sets of id, old, and new values to send back. Sorry for not making that clear earlier.

I currently have a parent Listview and its child Listview displaying in the centre column of an HTML page that consists of three columns left, centre and right. And all looks very good. However I would like to display the child list view in the right column beside the parent list view.
To do this it seems I must somehow generate from the code behind page a new row in the table every time the parent Listview displays a record of its data and then some column HTML so the first child list view will appear in the right hand column.
I'm trying to, from a client-side piece, call off to a server-side piece. I need to do this synchronously. On my server-side code, though, I'm calling off to another piece of code, which I want to have a maximum of, say, 10 seconds to return a value. If I don't have a response within 10 seconds, I want to force my own server piece to set my result equal to 0, and return to the client.
Here's what I have on my server-side code so far:

I realize this code is not functional. The problem is that I'm unsure how I would go about getting back into GetWebResult to set the appropriate return values before it is sent back to the client.
I am struckup with a problem from last two days. I am creating a web application using VB.NET, Ajax & RAD Controls. Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

I add an option to a select with jQuery. When I save with an asp button, I don't see the changes on the server side in the click event.
And the HTML is all correct after I add the option.
Is it a coding problem or I don't understand something?

I have an application which have multiple tab pages. On of these pages I have a group box with many controls that do something.Now the problem is I want to add exactly the same group box by the current one that can have different paparemeters.This is exactly the way that i want to add comparison capability between to set of parameters.I have more than 500 lines of code that responde to changes of these parameters and does something.Is there any way to replicate the the whole gropbox and use the same code for both and and being able to difrentiate between gropboxes.I think there was an array control in vb 6 but I am not sure if this the best way to do this in vb.net.What is the best way to do this for the least amount of changing the code and wasting time.

After seaching far and wide, I have come across a wiki that I think may be what I am looking for, but the examples are written in C, which is absolutely not my thing.I would like to use the functions SetupDiGetClassDevs, SetupDiEnumDevice Interfaces and SetupDiGetDeviceInterfaceDetail included in setupapi.dll to retrieve the devicename of the printer so I can then call CreateFile() from kernel32.dll to get a handle on the printer I would like to use. I'm not sure if the steps I've mentioned are the right way to retrieve the device name (hardcoding in a device name doesn't seem to work, so I'm assuming this is the only thing I can do). The main problem I am having with those functions is that I do not know how to call them. As I mentioned, I referenced a wiki, which can be found here, but I do not understand the parameters and structures etc.. that I need to pass in order for this to work. Can someone please explain the parameters (namely where to get the first parameter for SetupDiGetClass Devs), how to define the structures etc...If it matters, this is all the code I have for this task

View 3 RepliesI'm not real sure how to even ask this question... but here goes.I'm using VB2005 and DirectX 9, D3D. It is 2D isometric display.Here is what I CAN do. Create a map grid. Draw each tile out and present the map on the screen. (ISO) I can even scroll around using the arrows and mouse at the edge of the screen.
- I can click on the map and get the X,Y coords of the tile I am on.... look up the grid to see what is supposed to be on this tile.The only game coding experience I have is using windows forms controls... I've done a few dozen of them. Dice games, card games..

View 3 RepliesBasicly I have a program that retrieves data and parses it, which is fine, so it starts from:11:981.8 which equals to November 981.8 now what I have done is split the "November" and the "981.8" into 2 different arrays, with other similar data, now what I need to be able to do, is sort the array in either Ascending or Descending order, however keeping in tact, the November and 981.8 side by side in a list box.
