View 1 RepliesHow can I check through my application if computer is connected with internet or not (at the moment)I need a message if net is connected.
View 3 RepliesI have designed a website using ASP (Visual Basic) which our staff use both interally and externally (i.e. on and off our network). Browsing network folders is available to the user when using the site on the network. However, if the user has a laptop which has not synchronised with the server, network folders set for synchronisation appear empty when they are not.
I understand the reasons for this, however I would like to be able to present the users with a friendly warning if they have not synchronised their laptop. Is there some sort of system flag I can access which will tell me whether a given laptop client has synchronised with the network or not (the same trigger which makes the Synchronisation Manager icon appear on the task bar)?
I have done my application programming in VB. But now i am trying to do some application related to network programming. But i am unable to find the winsock control in Visual Studio 2010.
View 5 RepliesI have a server that the server OS is windows server 2003.
I want to share internet of server.
I want to make 2 program (server and client) that client program run on a personal computer and can connect to my program that running on server and get internet from server program.Like as VPN or CCProxy.
using vb.net and sql server i want to go to net work programming side. where i want to work on such applications where are network based, means to say that in a company, the application will be installed on main server and client will access them.

If you are writing a program that is used to monitor the status of your network, then this thread may not be of interest.
If you are an application programmer that uses network resources to accomplish your goal, i.e. you are using SMTP, FTP, HTTP, NNTP, NTP etc., and you think that you need to check for a connection first, then read on.Follow up to this. Before getting all geeky let's take a little detour...
Five days a week I get up, eat breakfast, check my email, forums, etc., take a shower, get dressed, and then drive to school. Many of you probably have a similar routine. What is interesting about that is not what we do, but what we dont do,because of our expectations and experience. Here is what I dont do.
I dont stick my finger in the electrical socket to see if there is electricity for the coffee maker and toaster.I dont fire up the command prompt and ping some host on the internet to see if I have connectivity.I dont check the battery, tires, water level, clutch fluid level, washer fluid level, etc.,before I drive off.
All of that is based on expectation and experience. So why would you write an application that pings the internet before it did something (SMTP, FTP, HTTP, NNTP, NTP etc)???? Is your experience or expectation that the network will be down?To illustrate and hopefully convince you that, like Oblio, it is pointless, create a new form with three buttons. In the following examples I use a WebRequest / WebResponse as my 'Something'.Here is what some think is a good approach, the classic ping-then-do, what I think you shouldn't do.[code]....What is wrong with this code is that all of the network IO is being done without a Try / Catch block.
ability to send words and numbers to another computer using internet. (I would prefer if a server computer wasn't needed.)
View 1 Replieshow to write code on network programming that is window based. most of the code i read are console application.
View 4 RepliesUsing the code below i will get all network interfaces wich are enabled and functional on the machine.
Private netIntrfc As NetworkInterface() = NetworkInterface.GetAllNetworkInterfaces()
For i As Integer = 0 To netIntrfc.Length - 1
If netIntrfc(i).OperationalStatus = OperationalStatus.Up Then
[code]....
But my problem is how to get the default one, the one(ethernet adapter) through wich user is connected to internet?I need to change some settings of default(through wich user is connected to internet) adapter. settings i change through registry so i could sample add same settings for each network interface but that could cause problems and makes no point then?
EDITED:for now i have done like code below, so if this can help someone other...
Dim u As UdpClient = New UdpClient(System.Net.Dns.GetHostName, 1)
Dim localAddr As IPAddress = CType(u.Client.LocalEndPoint, IPEndPoint).Address
Private netIntrfc As NetworkInterface() = NetworkInterface.GetAllNetworkInterfaces()

Developing an installer for an application, that runs based on parameters set in an XML file.
The initial install of the XML is in a template style (generic time for running app, generic settings), but via the Forms, I want to be able to have the user modify some of those parameters -say choosing time for the app to run- and then have the form write (Replace really) that data in the XML file.
Looking for some ideas as to how to approach this, as soon as I can catch on I will be able to do the rest on my own.
I have a basic confusion between serial port and network TCP communication to devices.
My colleague uses a vb struct as the nice easy to read way to create a packet to send out via a serial port. Like this basic code sample below of his vb.net serial call followed at bottom by my c# tcp beginsend network call.
Can I use a struct as well to call out for my TCP network beginsend? By looking at the signature of BeginSend(Byte[] as the beginning of the signature for that method call to send data to a connected socket, I don't see myself being able to use a struct.
Public Structure PacketRecord
Dim SourceAddress As Integer
Dim DestinationAddress As Integer
Dim Length As Integer

I've been working on my game for a while, in a non-online multi-player state it is complete. My goal is to add LAN or Internet Play support. My game is coded in Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express, It relies heavily on timers.Currently you play against the AI, and there is a Local multiplayer mode, using mice, controllers or the keyboard. At the moment, it is a two player, (Or 1 player against the AI) game, from my understanding the standard Client-to-Server option wouldn't very efficent, the best choice would be a peer-to-peer system. That being said, a lot of the stuff could be done client side, like for instance, the particle engine and Dynamic Rendering.[code]
View 1 RepliesI've got a DGV and a timer, I want to hide the DGV after 15 minutes of inactivity on my form. How can i do this? I've got a number of other controls (textboxes, buttons etc).
I thought somehow I could reset my timer every time a mouse moved on my form but would this create to much running on the mouse code when a user moved the mouse on my form?
As I've noted in another thread I'm trying to put together a secured kiosk app for access to our college library catalogue.I've managed to do most of the stuff with little fuss but, given that I'm not much of a programmer, I'm having a bit of trouble with certain features I'd like to incorporate. One of them is that I'd like the webbrowser control to return to the components designated homepage after 5 minutes of inactivity.
View 2 RepliesI'd like to find a tutorial that shows how to logout after a certain period of inactivity.By logging out, i mean writing a Row to my SQL database. The database table was designed with a column called user_status. When a user logs in, ASP writes a row called "logged in" into the database table. I want to find an automatic mechanism that writes a Row to the database after a certain pd of inactivity
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to setup sort of a LAN keep-alive proxy...Ex.: My Xbox 360 is connected strait to my computer via an ethernet cable. My computer is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi adapter. Everything works fine and I can access the internet on the Xbox and computer.
Issue: Every time I start my Xbox I have to set up a "Home or Small Office Network" via the control panel to access the internet. What I would like to do is implement a proxy that when I shutdown the Xbox the LAN doesn't give the "Network Cable Unplugged" notification. I wasn't sure if there was a way to make the connection stay open for so long after it should say unplugged. Such as if I need to restart the system and don't want to have to re-setup the network on the computer.
This is my code to retrieve the network info:
Imports System.Net
Imports System.Net.NetworkInformation
Module Module1

What does "inactivity" means related to SQL Server Connection Pooling (ADO.NET) Is it decided based on time ?If yes, then how to get the limit? and what happenes when the inactivity limit reached?

I am developing a parental control application containing a feature that logs a user off of the computer after an administratively set period of time. I do not however want the application to continue counting time against the time limit when the user is not active on the computer. EXAMPLE: Child logs on and is active for an hour then leaves computer for 45 minutes to get dinner. The session timer needs to ignore the 45 minutes of inactivity. I have thought of two ways to accomplish this.
1) Use a SystemEvents.SessionSwith event (to detect the Start Menu > Log Off > SwitchUser action), or
2) Use an event which would detect user inactivity in excess of a set time, e.g. 5 minutes (similar to a screensaver).
Either event would call a method which would simulate a pause feature (as StopWatch and Timer have no pause support that I know of). I believe the 2nd option would prove to be more universally affective as 1) some users do not have Fast User Switching enabled, and 2) users would be required to manually switch users in order to prevent their inactive time from counting against them. My problem arises when I attempt to implement one of these methods. According to the IntelliSense error checking engine, I have absolutely no clue how to do either of these tasks in spite of the research I have conducted on the topic. I would prefer to go with the system idle time approach.
I have a problem detecting whether one of the arrow keys is pressed, all the other keys seem to be detected apart from the arrow keys??? I have set key preview to True........ It detects the arrrow keys BUT ONLY if I have NO other controls on the form??? example..
Me.Text = e.keycode
It works, but then if I add a button for example, it stops.
Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:
[Code]...
I've been looking for a way to do this for like two days now, and no luck.
What I want to do is get into the temporary internet files, find a certain file....
(^^^ I can do that just fine (using specialfolders, etc) ^^^)
and get the internet address associated with it.
See the attachment if you don't get my meaning.
I have recently taken a liking to programming, and have programmed a few games in C#,my friend has asked me to program an application for him to use in his shop. But I have no idea of what language is best suitable?
View 8 Replieswe have our system running but our system needs to be modified because we did something wrong...we are doing an "Internet monitoring System" in our school library where the user can only access the internet 1hr a day, and he/she cannot use the internet within that day if he couldn't buy a time on a serve...every students should only have 20hrs time usage per semester...our problem is every day their 20hrs is being reduced in 1hr.. the rule is the time per semester which is 20hrs that is given to the students was reduced 1hr only if he uses the internet..but our system is reducing their 1hr every day.
View 1 RepliesI have a .NET 2.0 *.dll that calls My.Computer.Network.Ping(). The *.dll is then run out of an *.exe via AppDomain.CreateDomain() and Invoke(). The problem is that this works just fine under Windows XP but under Windows 7, I get an exception saying that no network connection is available. I tried the Ping() call out of a small console application under Windows 7 and it works just fine.

I am writing some code as part of a framework for opening a file. The file is of custom type and should not be opened by more than one instance of my application. To stop multiple file opening I use a filestream to create a lock file and then keep said filestream open. This seems to work in preventing another instance of my application from opening the file ( as it will fail in recreating the lock stream in the files open code ) but if the file is on a network share and the network drops then the original application also can not access the file any more. The code to get the lock stream is as follows:
Try
' We need to keep this stream alive to prevent other applications gaining access to the lock
mLockStream = New FileStream(mLockPath, FileMode.CreateNew, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None)[code]....
In this I create the lock stream the first time round and then if another application tries to create it, it throws an exception and stops them from getting any further. This is kind of how it needs to work, unfortunately as I said, if this is done across a network and then the network connection is dropped for some reason then I can not delete the lock stream as I get an IOException telling me a process cannot access the file as it is open in another process ( which shouldn't be happening I don't think).
I avidly create games in VB.net. Being a hobby programmer I give my games away for free. Since I'm a hobbiest without formal training I do try and educate myself on proper programming principles and follow them when programming such as OOP. There are however some things I have obviously missed being self-taught that perhaps I would know if I were formally educated. Once such issue that has really been my bane is how different classes (from now on referred to as objects) 'know' about each other WITHOUT programming specific interaction.
Okay imagine this, you have a space game and the following objects
[CODE]...............
Now each one of these objects has a Health, X,Y and Z private members and properties that are all inherited from clsSpaceEntity for argument sake. Now one way of programming collision between them would be to code out the following logic in the main game loop
[CODE].........................
Now this might seam okay if your talking about the simple example above but some of my games have tens or even HUNDREDS of objects that interact in this basic way. Is there a way in OOP to do the following... for each thing that inherits from clsSpaceEntity check against every other object that inherits this type (except itself) and if they collide then reduce health next? This sort of ability for a type of objects/class or whatever to be 'aware' of another and how they are the same/different and interact would save me tonnes and tonnes and TONNES of coding.
I have a problem I want to make a server and client where the server is password protected and will make the client display files/folders in a designated folder which will be in the server's current directory and the client will ask what IP and password to connect to and if the password is correct is allows the client to access the files/folders in that folder in C.D. of the server and the client can download any file within the folder by clicking a button, yet don't even know where to start.
