I am making a small application for a friend, to help her update her website. The website is a very simple one, using a menu (table of links) in one frame, and the content in the other frame. The content consists merely of pictures, with some information (text) below each picture. Because my friend has no clue how to change her website (let alone upload it and the images to the right FTP folders), I decided to make an application that does that for her.
I had decided on the following design, but now I'm having second thoughts whether or not it's a good idea:
1. I use a Database to store the information and path to each picture.
2. I generate the content HTML files completely from scratch every time an update is required, retrieving the image path + info from the database and generating the correct HTML code from it.
3. I save the HTML files and upload them + all the images they use to the FTP.
She can now add, remove and/or edit any items in her website, in each category, and it works fine at the moment. But there are a few problems:
1. When she decides to remove a picture (from the database), the actual image will stay on the FTP server. She only has a maximum of 100 MB capacity, so having 50 unused images on there is not very efficient. To remedy this, I simply remove all the images before uploading the new website, so there will only ever exist the current images.
2. When her site gets larger, the amount of images will increase, possibly to about 80 MB. I don't think she'll want to wait for 80 MB in pictures to upload when she only changed a typo in one of the picture's descriptions. In the past, the whole site is uploaded at once without considering which changes were made, so that wasn't very good. I decided to keep track of which categories were changed, and only upload the categories that have been changed. This reduces the amount of images to upload, but there still could be around 10 MB in a single category, which is acceptable but still not ideal.
3. The images she has chosen have to remain on her computer, because they are uploaded again every time she updates here site. If she removes them, they will not be found and cannot be uploaded. Now, the images would still be on the server, so there really isn't any need for her to keep the images. But, due to point 1, they get deleted, so I don't have them anymore.
I was wondering what people who have used VS Express editions think of them.My wife is thinking about taking a class in VB .NET so I thought maybe it's worthwhile to install VS Express at home for her to get a headstart.
I wish to develop an application in VB.NET to provide to following functionality and hope you can give me some pointers on which direction to take.I need some kind of "server" type component which sits in the background monitoring request from users and performing various task. (this component can be install locally or centrally) The users submit an instruction to the "server" to perform a certain task at a designated date and time. (or perform the task straight away)
The "server" would perform the task at the desired date and time and inform the user the result of the task.I have thought of using a central database to which the user writes the instructions. The "server" could read from the database to obtain the instructions, and write the result back to the database.
I want a fast reaction to the instructions, so the "server" must poll the database every few seconds; I fear this may be detrimental to performance. Also how do I get the server to perform the task at the desired time? Again checking all outstanding tasks against the current time is not very efficient, so I thought about utilising the Windows Scheduler, but I am not sure of the best way of integrating this functionality.
The main purpose of the my app that I need your help with is, to deliver an always (or close to) up to date a list of files for the user to choose from for a variety of common purposes. For instance, opening the selected file in its native client editor application so the user can make changes. Another purposes would be to print the file, and I have others.
If nothing else (meaning recommendations for a better design that still keep my desired in mind) I'd like ideas on how to update my complex DataSet (background processing options, what's the most efficeient/quickest way to update my DataSet) as the list of files changes while my app is running and my app is designed to never close due to the long amount of time it take to load it initially.
The list must be always kept up to date while my app is running because not only the intial loading of data takes a lot of time but updates (new/modified/deleted) could potentially take too long depending on not only how much data to update/add (new files) but how efficeient my code is in updating the list. To be perfectly clear: If a new file is created then it need to be somehow (automatically preferably or manually i.e. button code) add to the list. If a file is deleted then it needs to bet removed from the list. And if the file has changed, perhaps some of it metadata or thumbnail image have changes so update the file's data in the list. All of which (new/modified/deleted) need to be as real-time as possble without degrading the server too much and without the user waiting more than a handful of seconds.
Listing all the files as quick as possible whether that be with or without metadata initially is very important because most of the time the user is going to filter (or scroll the list by typing) for a partial file name. Once the user filters/scrolls to the desired file there's a very good chance that he/she isn't even interested in the metadata, most of the time the user wants my app to open the selected file in its native client editor application so he/she can view or modify the file. The initial load time of the data doesn't concern me as much as updates because the user can possibly do other things while it initially loads all the data as long as it not too long (more than a few minutes). From there the updates will either be automatic if possible (most desirable from a users standpoint) or the user initiated (e.g. button). Plus I'm thinking the updates might need to be done with a few different background processes (multiple threads) because I think I need one for periodic updates (e.g. every 15 minutes) and one background process for page updates meaning whatever the user has either scrolled to or filtered for, more accurately all files currently display to the user will be systematically update in the background so the user can still operate my app.
I'm currently using SqlDataAdapter.Fill to fill a DataSet object variable (which is bound [BindingSource] to a DataGridview control) to first populate the DataSet from the SQL query and then prorgammatically adds records (DataRow) for local files but please make recommendations. I don't mind big changes or starting over if necessary, I just want the best app possible based on the aforementioned criteria. I'm not sure if it complicates matters but I've also added custom columns in the DataSet for some special needs (thumbnail of files, booleans for tracking custom statuses). For the local files I'm currently populating the DataSet prorammatically (iterating a path/file string collect made by System.IO.Directory.GetFiles) since the list is first (and very quickly) populated with Vault files (which is always a far larger list than the local files) so . Again, I don't have to take this direction, make recommendations.
I simply want to create an application that can save each n every keystroke pressed from the keyboard and then user will be able to assign it a hotkey. And then whenever user presses that hotkey the data that is relevent/linked with that hotkey should be pasted into the active window e.g. notepad, ms word, email etc. I have developed it on my own everything is working fine but whenever I hit the assigned hotkey it wont stop sending data to the active window maybe because of timer.
Using visual studio 2008 environment, i would like to change a classic windows application design, so i'm wondering if there is an idea a bout this. i've find some skins like irriskins ( www.sunisoft.com ), but i'ts not what i'm looking for.
I simply leave the GUID text blank in Properties/ Application. Can someone give the advantages of using the GUID? I have done a few searches on Google and VBFORUMS but have not found a FAQ describing its true advantages in VB Application design.
I can articulate my question well enough to get some clear and usable feedback here. I have reports (like paper reports) in my .NET application that have data bound to them. Typically the reports are a combination of many data elements across several busniess entites that may not all relate through an Inheritance hierarcy, etc. This makes it difficult to get all the needed data placed together to bind to the report.
So what I have done before are make 'Report' classes with data elements specific to supporting the reports they are bound to, and on the back end might be tied to specially created Stored Procedures that bring this data back (maybe several joins across many tables to get the right data needed). So if I was to make an analogy to the database world, I am essentially 'denormailizing' the data structure to get all of this data into a single class to make it easy to bind to the report.
However on the hard line OOP concepts and architecture design, one could say that a report is just another 'thing' to bind data to, and its class should not be designed just to suit the needs of data binding. In this thought process, I would actually need to make my class design be able to create the relationships needed to get all of the data together properly to still be bound, but not create any special 'Report' classes. I find this difficult to do sometimes. It is much easier to create these relationships in the back end stored procedures and then just output the resultset to be almost immediately bound to the report.
So what is the right way to solve this? If I create these specialized report classes with really no behavior, am I introducing an anti-pattern like the Anemic Domain Model?I could use some feedback, and please speak up if my question and scenarios did not make sense.
i need to design an application in visual basic 2005 that will retrieve pictures on a form. PS: All pictures should be located in a combo box! And the number of pictures are 2000.I've started with cmb.Items.Add("pic1") but that really tiresome to write 2000 codes.
I'm trying to make an application for beta testers in my design group so that they can easily send their reports back to the developers. Designing the user interface is not the problem.it's the coding. What I want to do is let the user select a radio button for the project they are testing, then fill in some text fields, select options, etc regarding the project tests, then when they are done, click "submit" and it will either send the data to a specific email address (internally coded, not input by the user) or send the data in a text file to a directory on my server. (whichever method works/is easier) I'm not the best programmer, so don't yell at me if I'm slow to understand anything, LOL.
I am developing a new application for Students Training. how the database design should be? And could you provide a sample application similar to my requirement? Following is the requirement of the Application, The objectives of the program or application are:
Get Information about the total number of students trained in all company's department
Get Information about the total number of students who were either withdrew/ apologized /rejected
Anticipate of the future needs for student's work placement opportunities (numbers of students as well as the majors)
On light of the objectives mentioned above I consider the following data for the application preparation: Company's Department Needs Department Major Number of students for each major Supervisor Mobile Number
If it is possible when entering students details the program will automatically register him/her in the Department that has vacant place and already fit the requirements of the certain department-Internship Information.
I am designing a desktop application that will be driven by local data. I am trying to determine the best way to accomplish this. The database would contain about 10-12 tables if I use a database and I would imagine no more than 10000 records in any one table (but honestly 99% of users would not have more than 1000 records). I am thinking about using SQL Server Compact.
Is this a good solution? I can certainly include this in my installation, but I am just wondering if anyone knows of a better solution? If this is the best solution, how would you suggest that I create the tables upon deployment? Should I just run "queries" with create table statements in them from my vb application or include a database file or what?
Currently working on a web-service with Oracle10g as back-end. Here is my problem.
1. The table I need to populate has 100 columns. I have no control over the design of the table.
2. I wanted to use the "deriveparameters" method of OracleCommandBuilder, but found out that this is "costly" in terms of performance. What I initially planned to do was to derive the parameters from an open connection, close the connection, then maybe cache the parameters obtained but I don't know if this is possible.
I am unsure how big of a hit the performance will get if I continue using the "deriveparameters" method WITHOUT caching the parameters driven. The environment is as follows
-intranet -around 2000 users -users spread out in different parts of the country
I am not familiar where they will put the web pages of the application, the web service and the database. I don't know if they'll be putting it in different servers or on one server, but that's something we cannot control too, that's why I am looking for the best approach.
I just don't want to hard-code all that parameters and if, for instance, we need to change some properties/parameters, it will be a pain to maintain the code. It would be nice if someone here can point a way to automate the whole thing w/o the performance of the system taking a hit.
Dont understand where to start on visual basic iv been leaning alot about computers over the months and i would now like to design a program and to be honest its all new and i dont no where to start or what any of these woulds mean like string, data enadled application and refactoring.
I am encountering a very mysterious error which I have not encountered before. While trying to use VIEW DESIGN OPTION in VB.NET 2003 Solution Explorer to maintain the existing FORM the error message list below appears. Here is the error message that appear in the TASK BAR panel at the bottom of the Screen Property accessor 'IsMdiContainer' on object 'System.Windows.Forms.Design.FormDocumentDesigner' threw the following exception:'Specified cast is not valid.'
I have created my webpage in asp.net in 1024*768 resolution, my problem was that when i change my monitor resolution then the controls in my webpage will be displayed in unmanaged manner .
How to arrange items in my webpage which support multiple resolution ...
Whatever the resolution of my monitor the controls in my webpage will display as it is as managed in 1024*768 reolution !
I have a Console app that loops through a queue and processes each record in a datatable. Each process is long and time-consuming (connecting to a remote website, downloading files, reading them and adding them to the database). I'm trying to implement threading for speed's sake but am having cross-threading issues. (The job takes 8 hours or so to run and the cross-threading doesn't start happening until a couple hours into the run.)I'm trying to figure out how to make my code thread safe. I don't update or rely on any non-local variables, and I don't need to return anything. I've tried locking which works but defeats the purpose of the multiple threads. What other things should I be looking for?
I seem to have reached a limit on the size of the form. I cannot make the form longer and I need to add more fields. Is there a limit on how many fields can be included in a form?
I searched codeplex and google. I have found so many such as tustena but unfortunately they are not domain driven based and in these solutions I could not find a good modelling documents or references. i am a newbie in CRM but I am sensetive to design it with solid object-oriented fundamentals. Any reference or open source solution especifically for CRM design and implementaion in .NET? Cheers
How can I get back the design view mode in Visual Studio 2008? I closed the design view mode and I can't see any option to view my form in design mode.
I had saved a file in VB Express 2008, Windows 7, but when I opened it the next time, everything showed up, but Form.vb [design] wasn't there. I can't find it when I showed all files in the solution explorer, and there's no error in the code because the project can be debugged.
I have tried to see other solutions to this problem, but since I have tried those solutions as well without success, I made an account. Since I'm new to using VB, I think that I have accidentally pressed a wrong button, but I don't think there's a button that prevents your Form.vb [design] from showing up ;). I hope this is enough info and I have posted it into the right forum...
I have have to make and design a game in visual basic 2008 for college i also started colleage late... i dont kow how to start my game. the way the game is blackjack (21)
i have to get this off my chest.Forgive me... I'm a relative newbie stuck in the vb6 world because of my job.vb6 to vb .net is a huge change in the way one has to program (and to think). I never could figure out the big picture of things with .net.Everything is a class..? What's with all of this... Class this, Interface to a class, inheritance (of classes) here, casting? polymorphism.
As a newbie to vb.net (I use 2008)... I just wanted to say this out loud and see if i can even get my terms correct. Vb6 is a good language for beginners but not a real professional language and (vb6) is effectively a watered down, lazy man's (quick and dirty) way of creating programs to solve some particular task.
I'm very green with VB Express 2008 and am going through the tutorial. I'm skipping over a lot of the exercises as some of it is review for me - I've a fairly solid background in MS Access VBA and forms design there. But I have a simple question on VB Express forms design (I'm not worried about data handling or anything yet). How do I test a form? In my first form on my project, I just press F5 (Start debugging) and it opens just fine. However, I'm playing around with a second form in design mode and can't seem to get it to open to test some of the code (simple msgboxes associated with buttons).
In Access 2003 and earlier, there was a design mode and form view. The Access design mode was the equivalent of the design tab in the VB project, but I can't seem to find the equivalent of the Access form view in VB so that I can open that form. VB F5 only seems to open the first form.BTW, is VS 2008 the correct tag/prefix for this question on VB Express 2008? I see there's a separate tag list - is there an approved list of tags aside from the prefix before the title in the posting screen?
Just a quick questio with what I'm sure will recieve an incredibly simple answer.Problem: After saving and restarting Vb the project I am working on seems to lose design view. In the 'view' drop down menu where you would see 'code menu f7' 'design view shift + f7' I only see the code view and not the design view. The tab for my project which would normally say form1.vb (design) now only says form1.vb. The coresponding window for that tab does not show the GUI I had created just a blank white page.
I have a question regarding the manipulation of a form at runtime. Let's say I created a simple form in the form designer before runtime containing a couple of buttons, text boxes and labels. While the program is running, I would like to change properties of these controls, while having the ability to move them around, along with the addition of newer controls, say a listbox.
After the form is 're-designed', I would like to save the new settings of my form, in either a database or settings file. Whats the best way to implement this?
I need some info how to design/code a form, that only refreshs some parts of the content. Like a frame inside a webpage, that's loaded with AJAX, and the rest of the page maintains the same aspect.I know an application that acts exact the same way that i'm trying to do, but i don't know if i can refer the name.I want my form splitted in three, the top (unchanged), the middle that changes with the options of the user, and the bottom.
I often get this problem. I open a form in design mode and the form is not in view and scrollers can't get to it. Sometimes it's cut in half and the other half is outside the window but there's no way to move the form inside the design space to see the form in full. Sounds like a lame problem but I can't find a way to properly open the form
Design view shows an error message with projects that I open and with new projects. I can create or edit a project using code and properties. I just can't see anything but the error message in design. I can double click a label or text box and it will be added to the form, and I can edit it, just not see the form in design view.
