I have an application that monitors a set of opc boolean tags. When a tag changes from false to true (triggered), the application is supposed to query the database for data recording during a specific time period.I had the app done or so i thought until i realized that the background worker that i dimension to do the query is not firing the runworker completed event.at the start of the app, I create a new class for each trigger config in an xml file. Each trigger class has its own opc monitor and handle specific for that one boolean tag.If a tag changes to true a NEW instance of the query class is created.A new background worker instance is dimensioned to do the actual work.(this because there is a pre trigger query and a post trigger query which could be up to 24 hrs after the event has been "triggered" to true and the bg worker will wait until the required amount of time has completed before doing the post query). When the bg worker has completed, it should dispose of itself and all its managed resources.
The very first tag that changes to true will function as expected but when it is complete the RunWorkerCompleted will not fire. Everyone there after will operate as expected but not the very first one.I couldnt figure out why so I started commenting out some code.If I remove the line to create a new oracle connection, it works. I'm trying to connect to my MySQL database I have online at (mywebsite.com), however it just hangs for about 30 seconds and says and does nothing.
Dim sConnection As String = "Server=mywebsite.com;Database=mydatabase;Uid=myusername;Pwd=mypassword;"
Dim scConnection As New SqlConnection(sConnection)
Dim scCommand As New SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE user = @user AND password = @pass", scConnection)
[Code]...
I'm guessing the connection string is wrong, I'm going to try the server as localhost, but in the mean time hopefully someone might see what I might be doing wrong.I'd also like to look into doing it asynchronously, so the UI doesn't freeze,

1.Establishing a connection to a database(preferably one that is inherit within the project and can travel with it)
2. Setting the correct references to the database ( I tried connecting via JET with windows 7 and I get an error that I cannot use JET)
3. Query the database (Access) with SQL, and return those results to a recordset.
4. Loop through the recordset.
5. close the database connection
6. Open recordset and write data to table.

I know this topic has been addressed a million times but please help me out. I have read so many articles on HOW TO encrypt and decrypt the app.config file but I need to know WHEN and WHERE I should encrypt it.
The problem arose because we found an AppName.exe.config file on a users computer and the database username and password was clearly visible. I understand that the .config file gets created during the VB app install process and is used
by the application. I then learned about the aspnet_regiis.exe tool and ran it on the app.config file inside my VB project. I am guessing that was the wrong thing to do.
When I now install the app on user desktops, it gives an error stating failed to decrypt the connection string. Also, when one of my other developers attempts to open the project in his copy of visual studio on his computer, he receives an error when trying to access the setting portion of the project properties. We store all of our projects on a file server and any developer can access the projects via a mapped drive on their computer.
So how am I supposed to encrypt the .config file. If I can't encrypt the App.config file in the development environment, then I'm guessing I have to perform the encryption on the users PC during the install process? How do I do that? Or is that what I am supposed to do?
Just for reference, here is the aspnet_regiis command I ran.
aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "connectionStrings" S:ProjectsDevelopmentVB.netPTPUSourceCodePTPU -prov "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"
One last thing, maybe it's my misunderstanding of the issue but if this problem has existed since .Net 2.0, why has an option not been built into the development studio to encrypt connection strings?. This would seem to be a very common issue, even their own dataset wizard creates connection strings that are clearly readable.

I have some software that grabs information from a mysql server. However, users minimize it to the system tray, and leave it idle for hours until using it again. If a user leaves the program idling for about 15 minutes, then goes into the program again to perform a query, it throws a Fatal Error in the mysql, and says 'connection must be valid and open'
The reason is simply because the mysql connection has timed out..I was wondering what the code would be to re-connect to the server IF it has timed out.

I am storing my connection string in my app.config file. I am using sql server express 2005. The connection string on my dev machine is different from the ones at the clients. so each time I update I open the config file and edit the connection string setting. This is quite a pain.also I have now published my app to an ftp folder so that the clients can get the updates each time I make changes. saves me the hassle of going to them each time i update. so now i need it to be so that I won't have to change the setting all the time.Would the best way be to store the connection string in a settings table in the database?
