VS 2008 : SQL Local Database Attach (SQL Connection String Error)
Jul 2, 2009
I have attached Database to my vb.net application. Client has sql server 2008 express installed.I built my application and gave to him. he is encountering errors.
i am getting Cannot Open Database for requested Login. Login Failed. i am using SQL 2008 server Developer edition. And using Windows Authentication mode.
I have written a program which connects to MS sql express 2008 using the string below. This is OK on my computer but when I try to run this on a client computer I get the following message: "An attempt to attatch an auto-named database for file :(C:UsersBarry2010 vb programsadotrialadotrialResults 6.mdf) failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
Dim con As New OleDb.OleDbConnection Try con.ConnectionString = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source = D:\project\login.mdb" con.Open() str = "insert into table1 values(" & Text1.text & ",'" & Text2.text & "')" cmd = New OleDbCommand(str, con) cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() [Code] .....
If I insert integer value it will be updated in database every thing is ok but when I want to write some string in my textboxes and want to send them I get connection error.
I'm trying to a open a connection to a local database and no matter what I try it just won't work (I'm pretty new to SQL Server and VB for that matter) I tried using 'sqlconnection' with different connection strings but none of them worked or gave me any useful error messages so I tried using 'OleDBConnection' instead, this hasn't worked either and it gives me this error instead:"A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in MyProgram.exe"
Here is the code I am currently trying:
Private Sub MemDetailsSearch_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load ConnectionString = ("Provider = Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data Source = Database.sdf") DataConnect = New OleDbConnection(ConnectionString)
I tried attach .mdf file to server via vb.net code for deployment my application .I put .mdf and log in debug folder and I used this connection string.[code]
I've been looking over a bunch of code snippets and I'm just not understanding what is going on there.anding the connection, reading/manipulation, and closing pI keep reading all about these DataAdapters, Ole and Sql and Sqlce and I don't know which to use or whatever.I made a database in VB.NET 2010 that came out as database.sdf and I selected the Local Database option (I assume this is relevant?). I then populated the database with a row of data with column titles and a primary key. The table contains many different columns, but for test purposes, the following is relevant:
DB Name: db_test Table Name: Locations Primary Key Column Header: CITY
I know this topic has been addressed a million times but please help me out. I have read so many articles on HOW TO encrypt and decrypt the app.config file but I need to know WHEN and WHERE I should encrypt it.
The problem arose because we found an AppName.exe.config file on a users computer and the database username and password was clearly visible. I understand that the .config file gets created during the VB app install process and is used by the application. I then learned about the aspnet_regiis.exe tool and ran it on the app.config file inside my VB project. I am guessing that was the wrong thing to do.
When I now install the app on user desktops, it gives an error stating failed to decrypt the connection string. Also, when one of my other developers attempts to open the project in his copy of visual studio on his computer, he receives an error when trying to access the setting portion of the project properties. We store all of our projects on a file server and any developer can access the projects via a mapped drive on their computer.
So how am I supposed to encrypt the .config file. If I can't encrypt the App.config file in the development environment, then I'm guessing I have to perform the encryption on the users PC during the install process? How do I do that? Or is that what I am supposed to do?
Just for reference, here is the aspnet_regiis command I ran.
One last thing, maybe it's my misunderstanding of the issue but if this problem has existed since .Net 2.0, why has an option not been built into the development studio to encrypt connection strings?. This would seem to be a very common issue, even their own dataset wizard creates connection strings that are clearly readable.
Dim mysqlconn As New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=.ccsinventory.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True") Dim myinvdataadapt As New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM inventory", mysqlconn) Dim myinvcmdbld As New SqlCommandBuilder(myinvdataadapt)
[code]....
Why does this not work and why am I getting this error?I am under a deadline of less than 20 hours to get it working.
I am getting this error:{"An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file D:WORKDocStoreDocStoreDatabaseDocStore.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."}
I verified the file exists and is checked out for edit. This is in my app.config:
I am storing my connection string in my app.config file. I am using sql server express 2005. The connection string on my dev machine is different from the ones at the clients. so each time I update I open the config file and edit the connection string setting. This is quite a pain.also I have now published my app to an ftp folder so that the clients can get the updates each time I make changes. saves me the hassle of going to them each time i update. so now i need it to be so that I won't have to change the setting all the time.Would the best way be to store the connection string in a settings table in the database?
I am attempting to write a program that will disable the Local Area Connection while leaving the Wireless connection enabled. My company is using net-books in our stores to demo air-cards and we need to keep them off of the LAN. I'm new to VB and VB.net, and it's been a while since I did any type of programming. I've gathered some code that others have posted in forums and tutorials and I'm working through a tutorial book, but I finally believe that I am stuck.
I have a simple scraper. It works on some websites, but on some there is this Error:
Quote:
IOException was unhandled Unable to read data from the transport connection: The connection was closed
It is occuring at "Dim htmlresults As String = Urlcontents.ReadToEnd()".
'Create the HttpWebRequest object Dim req As HttpWebRequest = WebRequest.Create(URL) 'Set the timeout to 1 second (or 1,000 milliseconds) req.Timeout = 10000
i am using access database for my program. now i have connected to the database in MDI form of main exe, and ir also works, user can log in, it gets verified etc etc etc. now here is the problem, when i load a form from dll and try to use any sql query on that form, i get message, "database connection is not opened". so what i did was, i added the connect() (a function i designed to connect to database) in the load part of the dll's form, it made the trick, query's started to run, everything went fine, and when i reload the form i.e after closing the form, i load it again from MDI form, i get error, connection already open..
Microsoft Access is installed on the local machine and I created the database with Access 2007. Will read some of the similiar threads to see if my answer is there?
How do I assign a My.Settings.Item connection string to cmd.Connection connection string value?
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand() cmd.Connection = My.Settings.Item("csStaffHoursWorked") cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.CommandText = "spSaveDeltekImport"
This is what I'm getting when I try to connect my MS Access mdb database to my program. It keeps asking me to enter a connection string and when I do this is the error I'm getting."Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.
I am getting the error "The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine." in the connection string when opening a connection to an Access database.
My Ms-Access .mdb file is on my website. It is in the App_Data Folder
The current connection string is:
OleDbDataAdapter Da = new OleDbDataAdapter("Select * from SerialNo", new OleDbConnection(@"provider=microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0; data source=ftp://ftp.WebsiteName.com/App_Data/SerialNo.mdb"));
Where am I making a mistake in above connection string?
Note: CRs added in the code for better readability
Is it possible change the connection string to a different database when the user changes the database they are using .i have a working program atm but i want to be able to change the connection with out having to change the code. the databases contain information from different years but all have the same tables queries etc.
My query is not the straightforward connection to MS Access.I am using a third application that places all data in an Access database BUT recently they changed the database so that it doesn't end in '.mdb', instead in another suffix: '.accdb'.The database is still an Access database but I cannot connect to it using the connection strings:[code]Previously I was able to use the second connection when the database name ended in '.mdb' (Database Name.mdb).
I have an application that will be called by a database(this application is called from an access shell that uses SQL Server Tables), my question is do I need to provide a connection string to write to the database or since it is already open I can just pass the insert statement. If I am to provide a connection string do I use OLEDB JET 4.0 or ?
I have just written an application for myself and a few other users to use .rdp to connect to a number of servers, by clicking on the appropriate button. In the full version of the program I have two sets of connections one for when we are inside our vpn, which uses local ip addresses and DNS names; and the other which uses the external IP addresses and DNS names.This works quite well; if the user has stored credentials on their pc for the connection they connect straightaway; and if they don't the .rdp dialogue opens up with the server name/address filled in, ready for them to edit the rest of the required information.The problem for me is that this means I have to code 43 different Private Subs and then link the buttons; and I was hoping that instead of individually coding each connection, I could get the users to:Select by an option button whether the connection was internal or external
