Ok i'm trying to declare a global list of type T (or is it <anonymous type>) i declare it in a module with something like Friend query As New List(of {whatever type i try}) the app takes some xml and parses it into a list but i need this list available to other classes and methods within the app, everything i have tried fails resulting in an error like Value of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of <anonymous type>)' cannot be converted to 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of {whatever type i try})'.
What would be the correct way to declare a list of this type? is there another way i could do this?

View 12 RepliesBasically what happens is each time it loops through it adds a number to the end of the string, and by the end I should end up with an array full of string in a format like "111 222 333 444 555 666" but I end up getting strings like this "111 111 222 222 333 333". The weird thing is, if I add a message box in every loop it works fine, but obviously I don't want a message box pooping up every time it loops through. What is causing this and how might I fix it

When you use List(Of ) you can add different data types to that list, and a while back I remember JM told me to make a new type to list or something and I was wondering how to do that. I want to be able to make a list that has a large amount of text and each item is named so I can gain easy access to that item.

View 24 RepliesI am quite new to the VB scene, and am still quite confused by the variety of options presented as far as choosing the correct project type.I have been coding for roughly 4 years now and consider myself still to be a beginner. My past experiences include, hmtl, C++, vba, assembly, and a few others which I'm sure currently escape me.However, VB is a whole new boat and I'm just not sure where to get started with what I want to do.I've Googled the internet, went through the MSDN, and even did some tutorials.My current dilemma is I wish to make a program that will do a the following: Allow a User to download a set of data from an embedded web page.Open an excel file Download more data from a different web page.Open another excel document..I'm sure this is probably quite simple to do (read: I hope...). However I'm just not sure where to begin as far as choosing a project type. Additionally I'd like to have it set up with buttons, where button1 reads something along the lines of "Step 1: Click Here to Go and Download Data", "Step 2: Click Here to browse to excel file", etc etc.What type of project do I chose to get the stuff done on my list?

how to determine whether the property in question is a generic List(Of T)? If it is I need to loop the list itself.
I've experimented with GetType and TypeOf but have not managed to get anything working.
To clarify, I want to keep this generic. I do not want to specify the type of T, I need to loop the list items and call the ToString method on each item. T could be one of a number of different types (application specific reference types). Is it possible to do this without specifying types?

I'm about to start translating my vb.net application, and I don't want to use the default methods provided by Visual Studio to do so. I need my application to be very light, and it nearly doubles it size to use the resources option.Therefore, I'm planning to use some thing like a class, of which I would have one instance per language. Since I don't want to distribute language files as separate files (I'd rather have them hard-coded), I would like to find an easy way to check if every field of the class is initialized. I was thinking of something like an Interface, where I would do something like this:

It's obviously not the right way to do it (although I could use properties instead of vars), but I was wondering whether the was a way to have the compiler check that everything is translated and warn about it if not.
I found out that you cannot set the array size for a structure when you are making it, i.e

I have to fix this by making a variable with type made by Structure bullet and then redimming it, i.e

This means for every variable with the bullet type i create i have to redim. Is there a way i can set the size of .mesh with .capacity for every single variable created with the bullet type automatically?

I want our other developers to not worry about having to convert a class to a structure or some stuff like that when they call this function. I just want them to be able to put a standard type in the (Of T) and have it work. I don't mind writing in extra calculations to achieve that. The other problem is I also need the function to be able to return an actual null value, so I kind of need the queryStringObject as Nullable(Of T). Which means I have to have T as Structure otherwise it tells me that won't work. So looks like if I change what T is I need to run some calculation to delcare the var as nullable or not.
I tried overloading this method so that one returns T and one returns Nullable(Of T) like so:
