I am using Visual Studio 2008 and when I am presented with a list of properties after a dot I can only use tab to select one property. If I use enter the property is selected but the cursor is placed in another line. Can I use enter just for selection?

I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. In the designer, I need for the collection to be set prior to the index. I tried to do this manually, but when the file is saved, the Designer goes back and writes over my change. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.

View 2 RepliesI have a custom control that as a custom property. The property has several preset values to chose from a drop down. The control can be added to a form. The property can be viewed and set in the properties box in the IDE. It all works fine.
Here's the problem: I can create new versions and recompile the control and/or the application without the properties preset value being lost as long as I do it in Debug mode. However, once I try to recompile in Release mode the custom property values predefined setting is lost. I first thought it was something with going from debug mode to release mode. But it seems to be ANY time I recompile in Release mode the custom property values are lost. Is this a quirk in VS that needs a configuration setting, etc. to get around it?
I have an MDI form on which I have placed a ToolStripContainer. I have set the BackColor of the toolstripcontainer.contentpanel to an ApplicationsSettings property binding for BackColor. At design time the background colour of the contentpanel reflects the colour in the saved Applications Settings. However at run-time the background colour of the content panel is not the colour that has been saved in the applications settings (in this case DarkSeaGreen). View 2 RepliesI set up some application settings for checkboxes on an app and then decided to remove them. When I set the Application Settings to (none) in the designer and restarted the app, the checkbox constantly checks and unchecks itself. I completely remade the app and removed the file that is used to store my.settings in the Local folder of the user's appdata profile. I also made sure to uncheck the "save my.settings" on shutdown.
View 6 RepliesWhile modifying my form, I was suddenly unable to place any of the controls onto the page - i kept getting an error:
"Components cannot be added in localization mode. Select Default in the Language property."
So I set my language to Default...thinking that perhaps it had somehow gotten set to another setting. That seemed to fix it...I could now add controls to the form. Suddenly however, when I run the form, I notice that my new changes aren't there. If I re-set the language property to what it was before setting it to default, I see the form I see when i run it...it's like there's 2 forms.

View 2 RepliesI am working on a Windows forms project that connects to a Microsoft Access database, reads the the file, does some math and then provides some basic statistics back.I am teaching myself VB and I know the code below could be more efficient.However, right now I am just trying to make it functional.The program filters the data it needs via sql, and there are several sql statements.I separated the code for each of the sql statements and into a subroutine so that I could call each one when the form loads and also when the user clicks a button to update.The program works fine on the form load, however, when you click the update button you get the following error on the 'odaCalls.Fill' in subroutine Count(): "The select command property has not been initialized before calling 'Fill'.[code]
View 1 RepliesI have a listbox with several list items added. I want that as user click on an item, I should be able to show its property. This should change for different items. For example (hypothetical) : Listbox has numbers 1 - 10. Now when I select 1 I should be able to set property - Name, Lastname, Colour, Age.
When I select 2 I should be able to set - Age, Hair Colour (clr shows), Weight, Date. When I select 3 then - City (combo box drop down), Country, Age only. This way value changes for diff items. One way is to put them in property grid and show them. Though this looks nice but adding/removing items in that is not easy. You need to have a class that refer that to prop grid. Do I have to code for each classes for all values in listbox or is there an easier way to manage items in property grid. If you think prop grid is not the right tool for such an activity then can you suggest something else.
Modifying data with the ListView's EditItemTemplate by programmatically settings its DataSource property and calling its DataBind method. I don't have option to use data source control for ListView. All ListViews are bound with data from code-behind. So, I have to handle the Edit/Update mode of ListView manually. [Code]

I have tried using Application Settings but it appears as though I need to reference an application setting manually each time I add the control to a form. This is a Windows Form question.

The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

1. How can i save the treeview items, to settings (my.settings.history)
2. How can i save the treeview items as an TXT or XML file or another exception.
my old vb6 program used to store to ini files now with .net I rekon I need to do something new.. was thinking XML but then in searching around I stumbled apon this my.settings stuff.. so I followed the instructions but something strange is going one..
1. whats the difference between the standard my.settings and adding a new class that is of settings ? anything ?
2. I made 10 new settings in the setting manager but when I try to change then it gives me the old squiggle line saying no go.
