VS 2008 : XML Settings And Data?
Aug 29, 2010In your opinion what's the best way to write and read to a XML file if you want to insert random data to the file, like settings, and later on change, add or delete some of that data?

View 3 RepliesWhere exactly does a program save your My.Settings to?I took my program to work to do testing since I use it there mostly (but I create the program at home)I have a problem with my code that has locked my program from doing what it is supposed to do because of the settings.
View 10 RepliesI am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.
View 4 RepliesI saw that you can also use a "Settings File" (Add new Item)to add your settings instead of the application settings. But I can't seem to write any values to the file. Someone with experience with the "Settings1.settings"?
View 2 RepliesI set up some application settings for checkboxes on an app and then decided to remove them. When I set the Application Settings to (none) in the designer and restarted the app, the checkbox constantly checks and unchecks itself. I completely remade the app and removed the file that is used to store my.settings in the Local folder of the user's appdata profile. I also made sure to uncheck the "save my.settings" on shutdown.
View 6 RepliesModifying data with the ListView's EditItemTemplate by programmatically settings its DataSource property and calling its DataBind method. I don't have option to use data source control for ListView. All ListViews are bound with data from code-behind. So, I have to handle the Edit/Update mode of ListView manually. [Code]
View 2 RepliesWell basicly I have been trying trial and error, and im sure this is a very simple fix, but how would I populate a ComboBox with information from My.Settings using VB.Net.
View 6 Replies(using VB.Net 2008) I have been using the Settings feature of vb.net to store user/application settings of my program. For small stuff it's great, but quickly starts to feel limited as the data gets more complex. Now I need to group certain settings together and organize them in a hierarchical (or relational) fashion. But from looking at the Settings tab inside of .Net, everything appears to be stored completely flat. So what's the best option for me? Some ideas I have are:
1. Use a small local database (such as an .mdb or .sdf) to store user settings. I think this could become a pain if I ever needed to update/create more settings while avoiding losing previous user data - not very flexible to change.
2. Use datasets and convert the tables to XML files.
To save data to your program using My.Settings. To do this go to your program's properties and to Settings. Create your variables there and to access them, here's an example:

im making this simple app and i want to know
Let the user add collums?
let the user remove collums?
let the user delete rows?
how to change the the varchar of a row?
how to save the data of the varchar in the settings?
You know how using My.Settings.something to store persistent data is done only for user settings and not application settings. This information is stored in the registry on the local user section. My problem here is that even if it is in the same machine, when a user changes some setting it is not reflected on other users. This is desirable for some of them but there are a few I would like to keep for all users. Is there a way to do it with the settings? Do I need to write to the registry in the machine section? or do you just recomend I create a configuration file?

View 3 RepliesI have a project where I have data in the my.settings part of the project. When I compile the project and run it on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and a Windows 7 beta machine, the data is not getting updated. In fact I can't even find the .config file that should be created when my application runs. The code I am using to update the data is this:my.settings.properties. item ("Agent").defaultValue = "Andy"my.settings.save()my.settings.reload()What do I need to do to get the changes to be saved?

View 4 RepliesI will need to store 3 tables of data. Instead of implementing an entire database backend, I just want to store the record for these tables in application.settings.I don't care about security. Is it advisable to do it with application settings? how else would you do it? Perhaps storing a matrix in application.settings would be OK?
View 4 RepliesI've always used this approach while implementing data layer DLL for web application:
1) put datasets into the dll project
2) use a helper class with a method like this:
public shared sub settCnnStr(strconnhere as string)
My.Settings.Item("connectionString") = strconnhere
end sub
3) when I need to use the dll I call a method like this (usually into global.asax):
xxxxxxx.helper.setCnnStr("yyyyyyyyyyyyyy")
This method always worked for me nicely but I'd like to know if this method could have serious drawback or if there's a better solution.
The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings. However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.
View 3 RepliesIs there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.
View 3 RepliesI'm working with Crystal Reports in VB.NET in Visual Studio 2005.I have a List(Of Stuff) that I've sorted according to one of the object's members.I've verified in the debugger that the list is sorted correctly. When I define my list as the data source, as in
rptDetails.Subreports.Item("rptSubReport").SetDataSource(theListOfStuff)
and view the report, the list is reversed. So, looking for a workaround, I said, "OK, I'll sort the list backwards before binding it."The list still appeared backwards in the report. So something's happening, and I think it's within the report definition, because I don't know where else the sort order could be changed
i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.
View 2 Replies1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...

I'm working with an Treeview and i'm new at it and i have 2 questions.
1. How can i save the treeview items, to settings (my.settings.history)
2. How can i save the treeview items as an TXT or XML file or another exception.
my old vb6 program used to store to ini files now with .net I rekon I need to do something new.. was thinking XML but then in searching around I stumbled apon this my.settings stuff.. so I followed the instructions but something strange is going one..
1. whats the difference between the standard my.settings and adding a new class that is of settings ? anything ?
2. I made 10 new settings in the setting manager but when I try to change then it gives me the old squiggle line saying no go.
Normaly it's the other way round, right?Just going "My.settings([name of setting])"But the thing is that I can't call my setting what I want.If u can understand the question, please awnser it.
