I am pretty good with visual basic and visual studio, but the one problem I have is saving... I am currently creating a game, and it has a lot of variables, I want o be able to save all those variables to a text file and then re-open it later. When it is open, i want the variables to have the original value from the text document.
To sum it up: I need variables to be saved in a text file, and then be able to open the text file back and have the variables have the proper values from the text file.
I have been searching around google, and I found ideas, but I have no idea how to use them. Like using XML or saving a table with " TextFile.WriteFromTable" "TextFile.ReadToTable" but I don't exactly get how to use those (the posts weren't too clear)

Mar 25, 2010i have been hunting the web for a solution or example to my problem which is loading and xml file into DataGridView with combobox for the cells and then loading the comboxes with data that the user can choose from to change the cell value to and output an updated xml file. Below is my code with the column creation commented out for now, with this code the 7 columns are added with comboboxes to the datagrid but when I read in the xml file its adds the data to another 7 columns on the end and not into the columns I have created first.

Jun 11, 2010I am trying to write a vb2008 program that allows a user to select an airport from a combobox and then once the value has been selected it searches a comma separated text file once it has found the airport selected ( always the first column in the file) in the file it populates 8 other textboxes with the row data from the file. The idea is to select the airport and then it calls up the radio frequencies associated with the airport.I assume you have to call the data into an array and the search thorough the array until the combobox.selectedvalue = the value in the array, but i am unsure how to do this Ideally I would like to be able to the user to add data to the file thats why I used a combox, but I am having trouble trying to get the boxes to populate so first things first.

The first line is the song's title and group name. The second is the songs genre. The third line is the songs length, 4.25 is 4 minutes and 25 seconds.upon clicking a button, I need to display a playlist from this .txt file based on the number of minutes the band has to play, minutes entered into a TextBox, and the songs genre, selected from a ComboBox. The songs cannot repeat and must be random.I have already coded the program to read the .txt file but have not clue where to start with the rest.

Loading Text File Text Into Two Textboxes?
Feb 2, 2010I'm having a problem with loading two text boxes from a saved text file. I've built a log in form that saves the user-name and password on separate lines in a text file.I have a save button and a load button. My problem is that I'm new to Visual Basics and I can't figure out how to get the two lines from the file to load into their separate boxes on the form.The code that I have loads both lines from the text file into the User Name Box.Oh the username is on the first line in the text file, and the password is on the second line of the text file. Mar 12, 2009I am trying to create a program which reads data from a text file and insert the data in to a SQL 2005 table, but unfortunately it only reads the first line and insert correctly but not the rest of the lines on the text file
The text file looks like this

sort out this issue as I need read the entire text file which in reality will be about 5000-10000 lines and insert them in to the SQL DB line by line.

Loading Text File Into Listbox?
Feb 5, 2009So i have a text file that is created in the program which can be loaded back into the program(game save)
Whatever is in the text file "stats" should be listed in listbox1 in the same order it is in the text file. The same with "items" in listbox2. And then "quests" will be in listbox3.
The problem is when i load it instead of what is in the text file it says...
note that box3 is correct that it has nothing in it.

Loading Text File And Then Search For SubStrings
Dec 16, 2010Trying to write an app to load a Text file and then search for substrings that contains some specific characters to compose a list. Tried first loading the text file into a StreamReader then search line by line for my substrings. Had to write a lot of code to identify my strings, but it worked ok. Then tried loading the text file into a RichTextBox then use RichTextBox.Find(......) to look for my substrings. The " .Find" property makes the code really simple, but using RichTextBox the app was really slow.
Using Stream the loop was completed in about 2 minutes and using RichTextBox in about 30 minutes! I will need to make a lot of searches and using RichTextBox is lots easier, but is too slow. Is there any way to perform search operations using Streams instead making a loop and go looking line by line??? Or what else would be a good solution to search for strings in a text file??
Loading Text File To Sorted List
Jan 15, 2009I wrote the code and it works great but then i thought i'd have a little challenge and go above and beyond. i decided to make a highscore leader board system. i used the following variables and sub classes to make it but im having a slight issue...

The idea is that i wanted to make the system able to associate a name with a score, sort the score from greatest to lowest, save it to a text file, load it from the text file, repeat.
so heres a quick list of what i have working...
-Stores name and score
-Sorts by score then outputs
-occasional index of -1 issue
-saves score and name to a text file
-loads score and name when the form loads
-CANNOT add new data to the sorted list...
Thats my main issue. When i have data loaded from last time i try to add a new score to the list but then it gives me an error.
InvalidOperationException was unhandled Failed to compare two array elements
-pointing to the line...
In the details of the exception it continues to say...InnerException {"object must be of type String"}
i don't know which parameter its referring to tho, the variable name is already of type string and count is type integer.
