VS 2008 Manage / Start Two Threads Which Read Some Elements In An Array

I have a function which does some processing. Lets name that function DoWork. This function takes some inputs as structure and a string. Now I want to start two threads which would read some elements in an array and then call DoWork with some data and value of that element. DoWork would do processing and thats it. I want two threads to run side by sid.
So I tried to write code but kinda failed. I wrote a function which starts a thread and calls DoWork. Now DoWork accepts structure and string etc. But when we do say abcthread = new threadig.thread(addressof <sub name>). here we cant pass any-value except object. That was first problem.
Anyway, main problem is after the thread has finished processing DoWork, how do I find that out and tell that thread to take another element from array and start again. This has to be managed for both the threads. I need to find out which thread has finished first and tell it to start again with another value. I have usually used one thread but not two in this way.

I am considering a piece of code that will manage access to a collection object from multiple threads - add, update, remove, clear. OK ... so I have put a sync lock within each method, but what is not clear from the MS documentation is exactly how the sync lock is behaving. Is it locking the piece of code it wraps? Or is it locking the object? And if it is locking the object a private static object should lock out any code locked on the object within all instances of the object? i.e. if an add operation is underway, an update, delete or clear will wait for the lock to be released.
Finally, if I have multiple threads contending for the sync lock, how is the release managed? First come, first serve? random (from my p.o.v)? Is there a chance that two separate threads could blunder into 'locked' code simulataneously?

I'm writing a simple little program in VB.NET that has to play two sounds - at the same time.The problem is, that when I call SoundPlayer.Play() twice in immediate succesion, it seems that the latter call sorts of "takes over" the thread that is created by the first call, instead of creating a new one, like it says it should do in the docs.I'm using the following code:

I've come up with the following and it's partly working.
Public serial1, serial2, serial3, serial4, serial5 As SerialPort
Public serialports() As Object = New Object() {serial1, serial2, serial3, serial4, serial5}
dComPort = "COM4"[code]....
The above code works fine! But im having trouble trying to now retreive whats stored in the array.In the above example, an entry will be stored in serialports(4), all other array elements will be blank.If I do this it works.
MsgBox(serialports(4).PortName) ' this retuns the value COM4
But I'd like to loop though all array elements and print out ALL the PortNames, The below code doesnt work, I get an error Object variable or With block variable not set.
For i = 0 To serialports.Length - 1
MsgBox(serialports(i).portname)

Dataset's ReadXML() method would read an XML document. But how would we skip certain columns? [Code] So, if I use ReadXML(), it would read the whole document and the dataTable would have "id" column, "name" column and "price" column. But I want to have only "id" and "name" column. I have a application that use threadpool, and each thread stores data in the same textfile. I now want to have each thread store the data in the same array instead and use a timer to store all current data in the array into the text file after every couple of minutes.
So what I want to do is:
1. All threads store data in one array that they all have access to
2. After every couple of minutes the data in the array is stored into the text file.
I know number 2 can be done with a timer, but is the first one possible? If so how do I accomplish this task?

I am just starting VB at 60 years old and with no programming experience and nobody to ask for help...except here, of course. So needless to say I am hitting brickwalls. I am using "Murach's Visual Basic 2008" and it seems to be a good book. This is what I am up to I have to declare an array with 5 elements with an index. I think that part is OK. Then add code that adds each element to the next one every time a user clicks a button. I have had many tries but the best I can get is just the grand total of the elements. Now I'm VERY new at the reading in a text file and storing into arrays thing and tried for hours last night to figure this out, googling and every possible way of writing the code. In this case I'm trying to create a number analysis app. I'm required to declare an array and get the data for the array using ten text boxes. Why, because my instructor said so.
My problem is my event is returning zero. Therefore I believe my code is somehow flawed.
My approach is to create functions that calculate the required metrics. I have only tried to code one function to date. If I can get help making one function work, I will be able to do the others .

I have a class I am working on for a program I am writing while I am stuck at hospital 3x a week and was wondering. If my class has a Reset function that sets the count variable to 0, can I then say that the Data array is equal to "nothing" and wipe all the data that was in it?
