VS 2008 Managing/theming Other Apps (developing A Shell)?

Jan 12, 2010

I'm developing a shell (think LiteStep or SharpE) for Windows using Visual Basic .NET, and I have reached the point where I will need to get into theming other windows that doesn't run inside the shell itself.Modifications I will need to do is to change their title bars - probably using some kind of API call - to match the design I've integrated into the shell itself, if that is even possible. Having Aero on windows running in a shell that doesn't even look like Aero at all isn't very pretty.) Is there a chance I might be able to do this, or will I have to use a 3rd party application and/or develop my own little programming language for shell-specific applications (which would be a pain)?

VS 2008 Make A Shell Replacement For The Windows Default Shell

Aug 1, 2009

I'm going to attempt to make a shell replacement for the Windows default shell: explorer.exe. I'm not sure if its possible using Vb.Net, but I can't seem why not. My end goal is to use a custom made shell for a Windows Preinstallation Environment instead of the default command prompt. I plan to use a 3rd party program to compile the program with the .NET Framework. Otherwise, it wouldn't work because Windows PE does not support the .NET Framework.

ASP.NET Theming Programmatically Image Paths

Mar 14, 2011

We have a multilingual site, or culture-sensitive, and some of the static content now needs to be targeted; for this I'm using themes as it seems the easiest way to achieve what I want, but I can't for the life of me get the images to pick up.I'm setting the theme in code-behind, and thought at first that maybe this was the issue, but on checking up it looks like I'm doing the right thing (setting on Pre-Init).I expect to be able to reference images using relative paths where App_Themes/ThemeName/ is automatically resolved, such as:[code]In the above code, CurrentSite. Culture Name would be a language culture name (for example, en-gb, or nn-no) that does have an existing corresponding theme folder containing all required resources.Pages do have EnableTheming set to True. Also, I have tried removing the theme-setting code and applying the theme in the page using Theme="en-gb" to no avail. Is there anything immediately evident as to why the URLs aren't resolved?

VS 2008 Managing The Users Application Settings?

Oct 28, 2009

I have a simple application with a main form and an options dialogue. The options dialogue has various TextBox's and drop downs where the user can make changes and OK/Cancel buttons for when they're done.On the FormClosing event of the main form, I save these settings to an XML file. When the program is first run, the settings are loaded back into the options dialogue. The application reads settings directly from the controls in the options dialogue during run time.

VS 2008 Creating Storing And Managing Forms Dynamically?

Jan 20, 2011

I'm making a LAN instant messenger and I'm trying to achieve something similar to how MSN will open a new chatting window when you double click on a friend. My main form has a list of friends, and I want to create a new chat window when they double click on one of those friends. I've created a "template" chat form which I want to generate dynamically, and I've run into some problems I need help with. Lets look at the code I already have.

[Code]...

Now, call me a newb if you will, but I really don't know much about threading and all that hocus pocus. Some guidance in the right direction would be great.

EDIT: ClientWind is the chat form.EDIT: That's weird. It doesn't occur with the actual builds.

VS 2008 VB Apps Talk To Each Other?

Aug 22, 2009

What I want to produce is a form with about 20 text box's on it that are linked to a timer. That is easy, what isn't easy for me is how to get the data in a loaded form from access to another VB app. (timer form will be limited to one instance)

I have an access database which copies a string to clipboard and then opens a vb app. I have a button on that app which captures the clipboard text and moves it to an empty field starting a timer (lots of fields, keeps searching till it finds an empty field). What I want to know is: can access talk to a vb form that is already loaded and start a function?ORIf access can't talk directly to a vb app, can vb apps talk to each other and swap data (not just keystroke macros eithre)?

I can get access to copy text to the clipboard, launch a VB program that grabs the text in the clipboard and starts a timer, but can I get that VB app to talk to a second application?EDIT: I should add that VB doesn't need to talk to any tables in access, just what is in the clipboard.

EDIT: Tried to make 2 instances of the same app talk to each other using my.settings but it didn't work.
Could I make them talk to each other through a file other than my.settings file OR make the my.settings file absolute regardless of how many instances?

how to develop unicode application in vb.net and sql server 2008 ?how to start develop and what are the things i have to consider to develop effective unicode application ?. this application should support japanees and english language based on user selection.i took steps but i don't know it is correct.

1. i created tables in sql server with fields, for strings - NVARCHAR, for integer INT, for datetime DATETIME,for numeric NUMERIC.

2. i created another setting-table to have all screens name, label names ( for labels and grid column headers ) and corresponding japanees display names and another column for english display text.

VS 2008 Language - Developing An Application That Uses A Sql Server Database

Apr 13, 2009

i 'm develloping an application that uses a sql server database, in my computer where i'm programming i installed the sql server in the same language of the OS, in the tests of the application everything worked fine. Biut after migrating the db to the main server, the values went crazy.. After some research and tests, i saw that the language of the sql server was in english and that was the problem.

My language settings says that the decimal separator is "," and the agrupment digit it's ".", and the sql server works in the other way "." is the decimal separator and the "," it's the agrupment digit. In my code i was using the CDEC to pass the values to the DB, to solve this i removed the cdec and send the parameter as a string (So if i send 2,33 to DB with CDEC i get 233 if i send the 2,33 string i get 2.33). This works for now, but i don't know if in the future i'll have problems...

I was thinking in creating DLLs for each one, and after putting the DLLs in one folder inside my Main Application instalation, it recognizes all the DLLs in that folder and create the appropriated menu for the DLL with the options defined inside. Kind off add-in, this may help me in the future if i need/want to add other apps/DLLs.I already seen something like this in the web, but i don't remember where or what should i write in the google to get what i want...

VS 2008 Developing A Custom Component (single Signed Dll File)

Nov 26, 2011

Im currently developing a custom logging component, that we will deploy with all our applications, windows services, webapps, windows apps etc. I have a few questions of various nature. The component is a single signed dll file:

1) Which is the "safest" way to get the current directory? For example, in the config file, in the config section I have a property "logpath". The application will read this and write a log file depending in what they write:

c:myapplog (it will write a log here, create whatever folders it need) /Log (directly under the installed app directory, like c:program filesmyappLog) Log (same as above) I need something that work with both windows and web apps, for webapps it will log under the virtual directory of the aspnet app.

2) For exception handling, if nothing special is happening, like in the DAL, I get a sql server exception, is there any point in using

Programming Login - Developing A Windows Application Using Visual Basic 2008 With A SQL Server Database

Feb 26, 2011

Iam developing a Windows application using Visual Basic 2008 with a SQL Server database. Throughout the program I give the user as many options as possible and have no problem with either the database or the windows forms. The program does not initially require a Login and I want toprovide the User with the opportunity to add a Login to the system. The default Login form is perfectly satisfactory.

The problem is that I can't figure out how to program the change sothat the Login from isopens the program rather then th form designated as the StartUp form. this forum I am able to prgrammatically change the form but I can't figure out how to make the requirement a permanent factor. I tried using a Constant, but if the User wants to change, you can't change the constant. Its an apparantly simple yes/no situation but if I set a varable to yes and then change it to no the next time the program runs, the change will be lost.
