VS 2008 Manipulating A Control's Location Property?

Jun 27, 2009

This one has me stumped. I'm trying to change the location of an object's X position so that it has a marquee like effect. I'm doing this with buttons and text, etc..

PictureBox1.Location = New Point(PictureBox.Location.X - 10, PictureBox.Location.Y)With the intention of it moving 10px to the left. I would then use a timer, but it scrolls automatically for me,

VS 2008 Listening To Events Of Control As Property

Dec 24, 2009

I have another question about my customizable Menu/Tool/StatusStrip control.

I have three controls called CustomizableMenuStrip, CustomizableToolStrip and CustomizableStatusStrip. Each of those controls has a property called Appearance, which accepts an instance of a component called AppearanceControl.

The AppearanceControl component basically exposes all color properties for the customizable strips, so the user can edit them, and more importantly exposes a ToolStripProfessionalRenderer which the three strips have to use. This way the three strips are rendered with the colors the user chooses in the AppearanceControl.

Now, I'm wondering if I'm doing things the right way. When any of the color properties in the AppearanceControl has changed, all the strips that use that particular AppearanceControl should have their Renderer set again, and should be invalidated.

I figured the easiest way (and probably the only way?) to go about this was to have the AppearanceControl raise an event (AppearanceChanged), which the three strip controls listen for. When that event is raised, the strip controls can set their Renderer to the Renderer that the AppearanceControl exposes, and then invalidate themselves.

VS 2008 Round E.Location To Nearest Grid Square Location?

Nov 9, 2009

I was using this old method of creating a bunch of rectangles when I need to get the location of a certain point within a grid so I could draw images on the grid. The thing is, I don't want to use rectangles, I want to be able to just round the location as if I were using rectangles. I need it to be able to round the point (66,70) to (50,50) so if you can imagine a grid and the mouse position being within that square in the grid, I need to get the location of the upper left corner of that square.

VS 2008 - User Control With DataSource, DisplayMember And ValueMember Property

Nov 19, 2009

I need to create a user control which can be used in my all projects. I have created a user control with a TextBox Control and a ListBox Control. My goal is that as soon as any character is pressed in the textbox, Listbox's item which starts from that character should be selected. I have done all the coding needed for the functionality but my problem is that when I add this usercontrol to my form, I should be able to change the DataSource, displaymember and valuemember properties at designtime. But I cannot see these properties when I add the control on the form.

Setting Form Bounding Location Property To Entry

Feb 25, 2011

VS 2008, vb.net, Win7 development machine. I've developed a Windows application with several different forms, and am using the My.Settings feature. This is the first time that I have used this feature. For each form, I have set the form's property binding 'location' property to an entry in 'settings' of My Project settings page of the VS 2008 development environment. The settings are set to user scope.

1.) Do I need to add any code to my application to make the settings work, or is it sufficient that I have the "Save My.Settings on shutdown" set to true?
2.) When I create my setup to install the application, what settings file (app.config?) do I install to the user's machine, and what folder should it be installed to?

VS 2008 Manipulating WndProc Messages Causes Weird Behavior When Changing Me.ShowInTaskbar

Oct 8, 2009

I am capturing a few system command messages (namely minimize/maximize/restore). Inside the WndProc override I am trying to change the form's Me.ShowInTaskbar value but it is causing weird behavior in that minimization and restoration does not occur properly. Can anyone think of a reason why changing this property would interfere with this? The reason I don't really want to post code is because duplicating the effect takes a bit of code/setup. My initial thought was that changing the property's value is somehow sending another windows message and canceling the one I am currently manipulating. I realize this is a little vague but it's a shot in the dark.

VS 2008 Cross-thread Error, Change Control Property By (other) Class Event PropertyChanged?

Apr 1, 2010

I need some help to understand my options to get this working. I try to update a textbox control by a property-changed event from a class variable. I've digged around for a day and have a vague understanding that this can be solved in three ways:

1. Using some "if InvokeRequired", "Invoke" code in the handler method
2. By programming a special delegate class for this variable
3. By using a databinding directly linking the control (textbox) to the class event

Now.. Are these options correct? And would it be possible to get some help to show these three solutions in actual code (relevant to mine)? I can't seem to manage to sort all the information to a working code. Also, what are the pros and cons of the different solutions?

As my code stands now, it's obviously none of the above, as it gives a cross-thread error, as indicated.

Bind Control.Text Property To Control Position In FlowLayoutPanel?

Jun 6, 2012

Is there a way to bind the text property of a control to an expression? I have a user control that I add to a FlowLayoutPanel. You can see I have 4 controls in the FlowLayoutPanel below. The first control is a LinkLabel and the other three are my user controls which are numbered 1, 2, & 3. I'd like to bind the label that shows the 1, 2, or 3 to the user controls index within the FlowLayoutPanel.

If I happen to remove the 2nd user control I want the 3rd user control to now display 2. I could use the FlowLayoutPanel ControlAdded or ControlRemoved events, but wanted to see if I could do some binding first.

Bind Property Of User Control To One Of The Parent Control's Fields?

Dec 30, 2011

If I need access to the value of a user control's property BEFORE PreRender, would I need to base the custom control off of one of the preexisting data controls (repeater, listview, etc.)?One of my user controls features a gridview control that is configured based on the user control's properties on which it resides. Several of the key properties alter the SQL Statement for the underlying recordsource. I'm now in a situation where the property that sets the WHERE statement for the SQL Statement needs to tied to a value in the user control's parent FormView. Think of the formview as displaying a customer detail record. The user control takes the customer's account number and then displays data from a related table such as Customer Contact Names. Since the gridview is created before the control's prerender event, working within the prerender event doesn't seem efficient.

Coordinates - Control Relative To The FORM - "Control.Location DUH!!"

Nov 13, 2008

I have a control on a form - I need to know the coordinates of that control relative to the FORM.

Now before I get six replies saying, "Control.Location DUH!!" that only works when the control's parent IS the form. What if the control is nested inside one or more container controls?

Could I write a routine that crawls up all parent containers until I reach the form calculating each offset as I go? Sure! But this extremely crude operation seems clunky to me - What I'm looking for is something a little cleaner.

So far the closest I've been able to come is this:
Dim ClientPoint As Point = Ctrl.PointToScreen(Ctrl.Location)
Dim LocationLeft As Integer = (ClientPoint.X - Ctrl.ParentForm.Left) - Ctrl.Left
Dim LocationTop As Integer = (ClientPoint.Y - Ctrl.ParentForm.Top) - Ctrl.Top

The problem with the above code is: It does NOT take the Form's border or Titlebar into consideration... so this calculated location would be off slightly depending on what kind of border the form has.

Forms :: Control The Load Location Of An App?

Mar 19, 2009

I am developing a windows app in VS2008 to be used along side ESRIs ArcMap. Most ArcMap users will have dual monitors and I would like the user to be able to choose which monitor my app is loaded on to.

When I deploy the app using the standard install package, the app will load onto which ever monitor the user places the desktop shortcut. However, when using the ClickOnce method of deployment, the placement of the shortcut does not matter and the app always loads on the primary display monitor.

Is there a way to control where an app is loaded by code or any other method?

VS 2008 - Property Grid - Click On Item Show Its Property

Mar 18, 2009

I have a listbox with several list items added. I want that as user click on an item, I should be able to show its property. This should change for different items. For example (hypothetical) : Listbox has numbers 1 - 10. Now when I select 1 I should be able to set property - Name, Lastname, Colour, Age.

When I select 2 I should be able to set - Age, Hair Colour (clr shows), Weight, Date. When I select 3 then - City (combo box drop down), Country, Age only. This way value changes for diff items. One way is to put them in property grid and show them. Though this looks nice but adding/removing items in that is not easy. You need to have a class that refer that to prop grid. Do I have to code for each classes for all values in listbox or is there an easier way to manage items in property grid. If you think prop grid is not the right tool for such an activity then can you suggest something else.
