View 1 RepliesI'm working on a query where I only want to use the 8 first characters entered in to the textbox. Is there some attribute to textbox that allows me to do this?
View 4 RepliesI am building a form and i want to prevent certain characters from being typed in a textbox? I want to disable the " and ' characters in some of my textboxes
View 4 RepliesI have a text box where users will enter 4 digits that are ONLY numbers 0-9. I have blocked all letters and less than 4 or greater than 4 digits. But, for example if I enter 10.0, it will throw an exception, due to incorrect math used later in the prog. So how can I block the use of a (.) or any special character for that matter! I am using specific msgboxes to let the user know what isn't allowed, and would like to do the same for special characters.
What I have so far:
If Val(txtEntered.Text) < 0 Or
(IsNumeric(txtEntered.Text) = False) Then
MsgBox("Sorry, but letters are not allowed!")

View 4 RepliesI often face the following problem : when I have a form with lots of controls on it (100 , 200 etc) and I change the name of a control , the IDE goes slow for a few seconds . This is very annoying when I have to change the name to a lot of controls . I believe this is happening because the IDE checks the forms , the code etc to see if there any problem after (re)naming the controls . Of course this is welcome because it prevents a lot of problems , but at the same time it creates some serious problems as well . Thus , I wonder , is there any way I could prevent the IDE from checking all those things in order not to reduce it's speed ? Of course I am talking temporarily . I believe that what I gain by letting it check after every name-changing , I also gain it if I only let it check once (at the end of the name-changing process) .
View 14 RepliesI'm trying to prevent resizing of the "headers" (columns) in my ListView control. I currently have the following:
vb
Private Sub savedColors_ColumnWidthChanging(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.ColumnWidthChangingEventArgs) Handles
[Code].....
This results in a System.StackOverflowException. How can I fix this or is there a more appropriate way to prevent resizing of the columns?
Im making a maze game where you try to prevent from touching the sides but when you right click you can go through the walls...
View 3 RepliesI have a TreeView that I am using for display purposes only. I don't want the user to be able to select any of the nodes. Setting the enabled property of the form to False doesn't suffice since it changes the entire look of the nodes.
I tried canceling the select action in the BeforeExpand event. It kind of works. It selects, then de-selects the item. I'm going to play around with other events to see
I am creating a Calender application using the monthly calender control.I am trying to implement a search for the calendar so a date can be entered into a text box which intern moves the calender to show the date entered. I have been try to figure this out with no luck, is it even possible to do?
View 2 RepliesI wonder if it's possible to do some action, when user've entered specified text in specified cell of DGV and he skips to another cell ?
What event should i use then ?;/ I can see some classes fot cellendedit and so on, but how to specified it to a single cell, not al of theme?
My boss wants a time stamp on items as they are entered, so far I can pull the current DateTime from the system. Problem is when it does this it has a # at either end for instance:
Dim dtNow As System.DateTime = System.DateTime.Now
When I put a break on this dtNow is #7/13/2009 10:48:46 PM#
Our back end is SQL and I have added a column of TimeStarted and I want this data to be input here, issue is SQL does not like the # symbols, how do i Trim these things off so that it will take the DateTime. I put the code in the form load event
Dim dtNow As System.DateTime = System.DateTime.Now
GetDataTable("Update AuditProducts Set TimeStart = '" & dtnow & "' where ID = '" & txtID.ToString & "'")
txtID is a hidden textbox used to pull the ID of the specific item that was just created. I went directly to the SQL server and placed this query without the # on the date time and it went in no probs.
An user is allowed to enter as well a value in the numericupdown box manually.. How to capture what he has entered? So far I have:
Private Sub NumericUpDown1_ValueChanged(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles NumAmount.ValueChanged
btnAdd_Click.ForeColor = Color.DimGray
If NumAmount.Value > 0 Then
[code]....
The above works also if I add a value manually and press enter... But according to the exercise it should directly notice a manually entered value without pressing enter. How to do that?
how do you restrict letters from being entered into a textbox?I know it invloves textbox_TextChanged but i don't know who to do so.
Edit: I figured out that Letters(25) = (a b c etc...) can be used but how to not enter the letter? Uhm.. Like, the user enters "a" and the program recognizes it using an IF statement. How will it NOT enter the letter into the textbox?
Is richtextbox can save a text within its control? What control in vb.net that could save the text being entered within its control paticularly, if any? I need somebody that could give me an idea on what control to use to save the text within the control. I'm not trying to save the text anywhere. I want to save it within the control. I don't have to save it with a filename and a path location. Just like this forum, which everytime you post and reply to a thread, you will have to enter your message in a certain workspace and after you submit, it will save within the control so everytime you open your thread you will see the messages. What control do I need to use in vb.net to do that? info especially the codes to save the text string within a certain control?
View 11 RepliesI'm making a hangman game (yes everyones starting point) and got the basics running. I've added so extras to it, such as reading in random words from a text file, only allowing capitals to be entered, an option of guesses the phrase etc. All very simple but a nice way to learn.
Anyway, I want it to show the letters that have all ready been entered between each guess. I want to do this by using an array and making sure the same letter cannot be entered more than once into this array.
So far i have the following:
Sub Main()
Dim GuessLetter As Char
Dim LettersGuessedArray(26)
[Code]....
and i do not know why. I want it to output the letter entered from the array "LettersStoredArray".
i want to know the code for an average of numbers from 1 to a number entered?
View 31 RepliesI have a Form1 with TextBox1 and Button1.
Here is what I'm trying to do: When Button1 is clicked, I want an Excel file created and saved into a default folder (the user does not choose the folder...code for Button1_Click will choose the folder), and the file name will be the text that the user enters into TextBox1.
I am trying to get valid data entered in a Windows Form.I simply used bunch of IF and ElseIF statements to set the conditions.
1. Because the field can only accept letters, I need to filter out characters. Eg: !@#$, stuff like that.
2. I need to apply a loop so that the user is prompted to re-enter the data or to have the error message repeat. Right now the error message display once and that's it.I understand the Do Until Loop but my book shows example only on numbers.
Public Class validDataForm
Private Sub validDataForm_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
End Sub
[code]....
The problem is this: I have two forms. One form and the other form do mathematical calculations. I want to save the values that the user inputs, so when the user quits the program and then starts it up again the values are still there. But when I open up the program, start typing in values, then calculate them, hit quit. Try to open up the program again, its giving me a message that the input file is invalid. When I click ok, the program doesn't crash, continues. But the values are not there at all. The other form I put exactly the same code, just changed the variables and it doesn't want to save the values at all! I wrote this code for saving and loading the values:

I am working in VB 2008 and I have a textbox on a form that is used to enter a parcel number. I can enter the number in a 15 character string such as 12345678...... and it works just fine. The parcel number in real life contains dashes to make it easier to read, decipher, etc. so it looks like 12-3-45-67....... Under the textchanged subroutine for the textbox I have a case statement set up that checks the length of the parcel number as it is entered and inserts the dash accordingly.
[Code]...
The code performs correctly when the input is an integer, but when I enter a character, the result is as though I've entered an integer. Can you tell me what's wrong with my TryParse statement?
Private Sub btnCompare_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCompare.Click
' Declare Local Variables

Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.
[Code]...
i have been trying to remove special characters. i am not able to remove many crlf in middile of the string.
View 3 RepliesI need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.
Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.
I have this code
UPDATE OPENQUERY (db,'SELECT * FROM table WHERE ref = ''"+ Ref +"'' AND bookno = ''"+ Session("number") +"'' ')
How would I prevent SQL Injections on this?
[code].....
Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days. So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I have two textboxes. I type in one of them and the text gets copied in real time into another textbox. There is one catch. I need to replace specific character with something else.
If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.
I started with something like the below code, but obviously this does not work (tried different stuff - this is for demonstration only). In the example below 'a' represents " , and 'b' represents "
Private Sub TextBox1_KeyUp(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox1.KeyUp
TextBox2.Text = TextBox1.Text

With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.
1) Does anyone know of anything in VB.Net that can translate such shapes into a System. Drawing.Region or know of a project elsewhere that achieves this please?
2) While I'm on the subject, how would you SCALE UP / DOWN a System.Drawing.Region please? How would you work out the Transform Matrix required please?
