VS 2008 Replacing API Calls With .NET Framework Classes?

Aug 18, 2009

Do we have nay .NET framework classes to replace the following API calls?

CreateWindowEx
GetWindowText
ShowWindow
SendMessage
GetWindowRect

Basically we have migrated our application from VB6 to .NET and used same API calls in .NET as well.

Now the time has come to replace all API calls to .NET framework classes.

We used those API calls to validate textboxes by popping up a temporary error message box next to textbox object. After few seconds, the error message box disappears by itself or on loosing the focus of textbox.

If we can use the similar functionality of .NET, then there will be less code changes

Replacing DbTransaction Calls With Calls To TransactionScope?

Mar 4, 2010

I have been using DBTransaction for my current projects that access a single database. However, I read some documentation on TransactionScope and was wondering in which scenario would using TransactionScope be better? Or should I be replacing DbTransaction calls with calls to TransactionScope?

VS 2008 Add One Of Own Classes To An Existing Framework Namespace

Sep 23, 2009

When you develop a class library that will be used by others, are there any guidelines on how you decide what namespace to put it under? I often find third party classes just use the company name as the root namespace but I was also wondering if it is frowned upon (or even possible) to add one of your own classes to an existing framework namespace.

3 Classes - A Form That Has A Button Push That Calls Another Class (Runit)

Aug 5, 2010

I have 3 classes: A form that has a button push that calls another class (Runit) to do work. The "Runit" class. It bulids a collection of process classes (see below) and launches them as threads A process class that increments a variable. This is used to build the object that is "collected" in the Runit class.

Here's the code for each. Note that I misnamed ProcessClass. It would be better named ThreadClass, as it contains the Sub that is to be the target of a threaded execution:

Public Class NT_Test

Public Const NUM_THREADS = 3
Public RC As New RunClass
Public Processes As New Collection

[code]...

The way this code looks to me is that when I trace into bDone (it used to be a boolean), I should see "1" on each pass (NUM_THREADS = 3; the size of the collection). What I'm seeing that mystifies me is "3" in all 3 members of the collection. Because of the initial loop, I might expect 1, 2, 3 respectively if either the thread did not update or I was passing through the same block in as opposed to distinct members of a collection. I can upload the project if that would be helpful. I didn't do so only because I edited a bunch of commented code out of this version that I've used for other experiments.

DB/Reporting :: Wrap Entity Framework-generated Classes?

Nov 19, 2008

I'm using a 3rd party tool to generate my model including code classes for the MS Entity framework. What I wanna do is etablish a real layer application. I'm speaking of the layers:

Presentation
Business
Data

If I'm not wrong the generated classes represent the data layer. My question is if I should wrap this classes up for my business layer or not. In some way these generated classes already represents the logic of my application as it was derived from my database. But is this enough?

I definitely wanna use LINQ as well which works pretty good with the generated classes alone.

I'm looking forward to any comments.BTW: It's going to be a ASP.NET web application. I have used the projetc type "class library" for the data layer. The web application will use this DLL.

Visual Studio :: How Does The .net Framework Nest Forms In Classes

Sep 11, 2009

If I look at some classes in the framework, using reflector, I can see that forms and user controls are made private and nested into a parent class. For instance, I have a control which makes use of pop-up form that is specific to that control. At the moment, I make the pop-up form friend accessible. If I wanted to do it the framework way, I'd make it private and nest it into the control class. If I do this, however, I can no longer use the ide to design the form and I get errors when I try to compile.

Fitler With MSDN DExplorer Or Any Other Tools Classes Supported Only In .NET Framework

Mar 8, 2010

1. Is it possible to fitler with MSDN DExplorer or any other tools the Classes supported only in .NET Framework 1.0, or 1.1 or 2.0? I know with MSDN DExplorer when you click on any class there's an info tab with supported .NET Framework versions. But I want to filter all classes supported in .NET Framework 1.1. for example.

2. Is it correct to say that .NET Framework versions are only upgradable (addition) with new Classes and functions but and all Classes for example supported in 1.1. are also supported in 2.0 and also supported in 3.5. For example are there any obsolete (removed) classes or functions supported in previous but not in later version of .NET Framework?

I read some statements of Microsoft in their msdn site articles that everything supported in previous framework is supported in the next, like there are backward and also forward compatabilities. This is not quite my question, my 2nd question is do you know exactly which classes / functions are changed or deleted, if there are such? I know there are new, but are there changed or deleted?

What the Win32 API is? I have looked around but no where really outlines what it is. Is it basically a set of procedures, outlined by Microsoft for programmers in order to get services from the operating system? In essence is it the equivalent to making system calls abd and library calls in UNIX? And yes I now Windows makes library calls too.

VS 2008 Capture .NET Remoting Calls?

Sep 22, 2010

We have a client server application that 650 users are using everyday. Lately they have started complaining about over all slow responses and slowdowns in normal application usage like searching, reporting etc.We are using .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Remoting is the technology we have used for client connection to the server side. We can't remove that and use something else due to legacy application maintenance. We are using SQL 2008 R2 x64 on a very good server. We have gone though the basic steps of making sure that all the SQL side is ok everything is well tuned but we need to convenience the client that it is not the application but the database that needs to be regularly maintained by a DBA in order for it to run smooth due to the nature of the application making tons of changes and inserts in the database everyday.

Anyways I need to write some sort of module that can plugin into the .NET Remoting calls so it can log the normal usage of different methods on the server like;* How many times a remoting method is called* What params a remoting method is called with* How much time it takes to execute each remoting callIs there anything available in .NET Framework that can help me? I read something about .NET Remoting Sync but not too sure if that is what I need to use? If any can shed any light on the subject or nudge me in a right direction with some sample code, that would be great.

VS 2008 - Replacing EXE Brings Up OLEDB12 Error

Jan 29, 2010

Bit of a strange one here,, We have developed a program and deployed it with a Visual Studio InstallerShield wizard, nothing really complicated its one exe along with the DLL required to access MS Access 2007 Databases.

The database itself is located on a server so not deployed with the program. Once installed it all runs absolutly fine with no problems. Now If I rebuild the program from VS without any changes to the code what-so-ever then get the exe for the program out the 'Release' folder and overright the one on my local machine where its installed I can still run the program but the second its asked to interact withe the database its comes up with the OLEDB12 error basically saying I don't have the provider installed or registered.

VS 2008 : Multiple String Parameter Replacing?

Aug 27, 2009

I'm reading a text file that has ZPL language for sending strings to a Zebra printer. Each line has one parameter that is replaced with a value. However, the line posted below has multiple parameters that need to be replaced with values.

'''''Line from text file
^FO005,005^A0R,035,025^FD(01)90723236{strLabelNumber}{intCheckDigit}(3201){strNetWeight}(11){strProductionDate}(21){strOrg}{strBoxNumber}^FS

I can replace one parameter with one value using string.replace, but how would I continue to process the rest of the string? Would I replace the first parameter then reevaluate the string again to find another parameter until no more parameters are found?

VS 2008 Replacing Original File And Permissions?

Aug 25, 2010

I've got two programs, one is the main and the other is the updater. So far iv'e got it so that the main program checks for an update by comparing its version number with the latest one that's stored as a text file on the server. If there's a newer one, the update program is started and the main one closed. The update program will then use a web browser component to navigate to the download link and download the new version. The only problem I'm having at the moment is, How can I get the new downloaded version to replace the current one in Program Files? and will this cause permission problems?

VS 2008 Setup Project Is Not Replacing .exe File?

Sep 6, 2010

I created a setup project along with my main program everything compiles ok and I'm able to install a successfully. The problem I am experiencing is when I try to install over the previous version. I have set the setup property RemovePreviousVersion to TRUE , DetectNewerInstalledVersion to TRUE and I also increment the Version number and choose Yes when prompted to automatically change the ProductCode.

What I find is that when I install my program, the date on a subfolder changes, I don't expect the dates of the support files to change. but I do expect the date of my main .exe file to change. Unfortunately it stays the same. Running the program also shows that this file was not updated. I have read the MSDN articles on this but cannot figure it out.
