I have my own control which inherit System.Windows.Forms.Control The only functionality that this control requires is the capability of losing and gaining focus. I learned this requires the control style of selectable to be applied which is descriptive as exactly what I'm in need of, "If true, the control can receive focus.".
However after applying this style in my code, the control still refuses to have anything to do with gaining or losing focus. Other styles I have applied to this particular control are as fallowed
UserPaint, AllPaintingInWmPaint, and SupportsTransparentBackColor. I'm not sure but perhaps one of these other styles interferes with the one that's not working properly.
Right, I'm making a program where the user enters a number in both boxes which is between -10 and +10, and when they press the = button, it adds the two numbers together. If the user enters a number which is not between -10 and +10, an error message appears which warns the user of this.At the moment, it's not quite working for me. If I enter a number outside of this range in either or both of the boxes, it brings up a warning box, but once I click 'OK' in that window, another window is brought up with the answer to the calculation.In fact, even if I enter a number which is between -10 and +10, the error message still appears when I click on the '=' button and then the other window has the answer to the calculation.[code]

First of all i want to say i feel very rude as my current posts only consist of me asking questions and never posting to give answers. im still learning and do not want to give people diff advice and sending them down the wrong path.I am doing an assignment for my vb.net course and im having a problem with tabcontrol. I originally didnt do my code inside a tab control. Then i had to copy all the code and button etc over to the tab control then the code completely stopped working. I copied the code then deleted it and pasted it back into my project and it worked again. But it seems everytime i restart my laptop the code stops functioning and i need to copy delete then paste to get it working again!I need to hand this assignment in shortly and i dont want to if my code is working intermittantly..
View 5 RepliesI am looking for a code snippet which opens a image, creates a clone of this bitmap in memory disposes this opened image so that all handles are closed.
Usually we can open a bitmap using this[code...]
the following code however keeps the Image File locked until the application is running, any suggestions how to dispose it properly. (So that no handle is left open )
Things i already tried: use dispose method of bitmap <= doesnt work (need to write implementation)
Using Block also doesnt work.
Quick question - if I have a timer set to 5000 (5 seconds) and the code in the timer takes longer than 5 seconds to run because of sql stuff, will the timer wait until the code is done till it fires again?
View 3 RepliesI'm wondering what exactly is the difference System.Timers.Timer and System.Windows.Forms.Timer???

I have a issue with my DataGridView. It's bound to a DataTable at form load. I have a sub wich handles data recieved from a serialport. Inside that sub I'm adding a row to my datatable. That works fine, but to make the row visible in my datagridview, I have to either click on the row, resize the form so that the DGV dissapears and then appears again, manually call DataGridView.refresh or something like that. Why isn't the DataGridView automatically redrawn when a row is added inside a sub like that? One solution is to add a timer where DataGridView.refresh is executed every second, but it doesn't seem like a good idea
View 4 Repliesthe CryptoStoreTest example posted here at VBForums, I've managed to store an RSA key in the PC's CryptoStore, however I have yet to manage to use it to encrypt data. Does anyone have any practical experience with the RSACryptoServiceProvider they'd be willing to share? I usually get an exception with an unimaginative message: "Bad length.", or I get non-matching results when using the same key on the same file. The MSDN documentation is equally mysterious How do I get the maximum length I may use for the Encrypt method? MSDN mentions something about a hash's length but so far I have found no hash in the RSA algorithm...
View 8 RepliesHow come when I design a form it isn't displayed properly on certain computers in the fact that buttons near the bottom go of the bottom of the window. I beleive this only happens with Windows XP however it might be due to screen resolution, I haven't troubleshooted it much.
View 7 RepliesI have a simple tcpclient/server messenger running. Everything works great, except for when a client exits the software. When someone exits, is crashes the server with various exceptions and the server has to be restarted, as well as the clients. What I am looking for is a way to properly "log out" a client BUT leave any other connected client on so that is no break in the chat. Then the person that logged out or a new person can join back in whenever they choose.

I am trying to use the Command Line Arguments during the Form_Load event to load the file a user might have selected in windows explorer.
I have set some file associations during setup, so that any ".script" files will be associated with my application. However, my application can also open other (text based) files (it's a text editor), and I would like the user to be able to use "Open With..." and select my application to open the files in my application directly.
I have to use the Command line arguments for this, which will hold the filename(s) of the selected files, correct?
So I did this:
vb.net
For Each arg As String In Environment.GetCommandLineArgs()
If IO.File.Exists(arg) Then
OpenFile(arg)
End If
Next
Now, when I open a ".script" file, my application opens and the correct file is loaded. However, in addition, the EXE file is also loaded for some reason! It has opened two files, <Applicationname>.EXE and the file I wanted to open. Because the EXE file is obviously not just a text file, it just displays some random characters, but I don't want it to open that of course...
Also, if I run the application in the debugger (visual studio), it opens the <ApplicationName>.vshost.exe file... So I thought, I can check for the extension of the argument, and only open it if it is a ".script" file. BUT I don't want that! I also want the user to be able to select any file and choose Open With... and select my application. That won't work if I check for the file extension...

I have a form which won't open properly under certain circumstances if a particular Button is set to visible = false. Under the same circumstances if the Button is set to visiblbe = true the form does open properly or if the line of code at a certain place where it is set to either visible = true or visible = false is commented out or not there then the form opens properly. If any one of the 5 phases on my form are turned on then the problem doesn't ever occur but if none of the phases are on then the problem does occur. I just found a fix for the situation but I still am not clear about what exactly is going on.

I have 4 red boxes and when I press an arrow key the box should change to green according to which arrow key it corrosponds to. I have this part working fine, however only when there is nothing else in the project. When I add in say 3 buttons, Button1, Button2, Button3 and try runing the program instead of the correct red box changing to green, button outline just moves between buttons 1,2 and 3. I have tried turning tabstop off for the three buttons but that didnt work. how to read the keydown/keyup while still having buttions that can be pressed with a mouse?
View 4 RepliesI have prided myself in having a pretty clean code however in the game I am making I have a player view (showscreen) and a host view, which is a copy of the player view (on a smaller screen). This way the host can see what's going on.The problem is that the graphic doesn't dispose properly and Garbage Collector gets it, though I have noticed it will crash if GC doesn't get it in time. The larger the showscreen window the more junk gets put into memory, which sucks.I thought I had everything correctly disposed below but still doesn't get the job done.

I have found a lot of articles about Reflection and know how to create a class. I'm practicing how to work properly with the reflection to create a module/plugin-based application.So I found a simple example which is working great, but it isn't dynamic enough, 'cause it is hard-coded. I need to read all the .dll's from the application.startuppath & "modules" & *.dll and get there names (without the .dll).Code is was testing for practice returns the form (I know that this is not the correct way to call the dll dynamically):
vb.net
Imports System.Reflection Public Class Form1 Private Sub cmdOK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdOK.Click Dim assemblylink As [Assembly] assemblylink = [Assembly].LoadFrom(Application.StartupPath & "/" & "LoginAssembly.dll") Dim LoginFrm As Form LoginFrm = assemblylink.CreateInstance("LoginAssembly.Login") LoginFrm.Show() End Sub

View 6 RepliesI need an accurate timer to interface a Windows application to a piece of lab equipment.I used System.Timers.Timer() to create a timer that ticks every 10 msec, but this clock runs slow. For example 1000 ticks with an interval of 10 msec should take 10 wall-clock seconds, but it actually takes more like 20 wall-clock sec (on my PC). I am guessing this is because System.Timers.Timer() is an interval timer that is reset every time it elapses. Since it will always take some time between when the timer elapses and when it is reset (to another 10msec) the clock will run slow. This probably fine if the interval is large (seconds or minutes) but unacceptable for very short intervals.Is there a function on Windows that will trigger a procedure every time the system clock crosses a 10 msec (or whatever) boundary?
UPDATE: System.Timers.Timer() is extremely inaccurate for small intervals.I wrote a simple program that counted 10 seconds several ways:
Interval=1, Count=10000, Run time = 160 sec, msec per interval=16
Interval=10, Count=1000, Run time = 16 sec, msec per interval=15
Interval=100, Count=100, Run time = 11 sec, msec per interval=110
Interval=1000, Count=10, Run time = 10 sec, msec per interval=1000
It seems like System.Timers.Timer() cannot tick faster that about 15 msec, regardless of the interval setting.Note that none of these tests seemed to use any measurable CPU time, so the limit is not the CPU, just a .net limitation (bug?)For now I think I can live with an inaccurate timer that triggers a routine every 15 msec or so and the routine gets an accurate system time. Kinda strange, but...I also found a shareware product ZylTimer.NET that claims to be a much more accurate .net timer (resolution of 1-2 msec). This may be what I need. If there is one product there are likely others.
I have a timer on a page in ASP.NET.
After a certain period of time elapses, I want to disable the timer.
I want to put a static variable in the timers tick event that will track how many seconds have elapsed.
My question is, will this work?
If user X and Y are viewing the page will they both have separate local static variables?
What is the best method of shutting down an ASP.NET timer after a certain elapsed time?
I have a windows application that need to process som quite time consuming jobs. In my first try i did all processing under
the form thread. The result was bad response and update of the form due to the heavy jobs.To get around the problem with bad response from the form i created a new class "processing" where i put all the data processing. Then i instanciated a background worker where i in the "doWork" sub created a new instance of "processing".The "processing" class creates a timer from system.timer, and the timer drives the processing.On the Timer event Elapsed the timer starts a new thread from the thread pool.
My problem is now when i want to asynchronously close the background worker (with the corresponding function call what ever it is called ...) there is still a timer thread out there that causes exceptions for me.
1. How can i close my background worker and at the same time have the timer to be stopped?
2. Is there a way to synchronize the timer event so that the timer executes from the background worker thread?
3. Is there a better approach for me to adapt?
I want to create an array of timer in vb.net. My problem is that how will i raise the tick event for a particular timer, say mytimer(x).tick and inside the tick event there is also a button, say mybutton(x) which changes location every interval. for example:
public class blah
dim mybuttons(20) as button
dim mytimer(20) as timer
private sub form_load(....) handles me.load
for x as integer = 0 to 20
[Code]...
i dont know what to do next, all i want is to pass the button mybuttons(x) to mytimer(x) tick event, in which their index number are the same. i want to create one timer per button. how to do that? please help me and post example codes. i've researched the net but i cant understand passing variables, addhandlers, etc. i'm just new to programming object oriented.
How can I incorporate the timer so once a page loads the timer activates, waits a few seconds then I tell my program what to do next.I tried this code but it didnt work:
Timer1.Interval = 5000
Timer1.Enabled = True
Timer1.Start()
