View 14 RepliesI am using vb.net 2008 i have been using a mdi form which is the startup form for my prog. and i have a main menu on that form. now i would like to shift to tree view as my client has asked for it. whenever a node is selected i can select the form corresponding for that particular code. everything is fine till here. but when the form is loaded the tree view is coming on top of the form the tree view is docked in a pannel. now i have tried everything treemenu.sendtoback and the say the form to b called is taxtypemaster then taxtypemaster.bringtofront but still the tree view is coming over the form
I have tried the following :
Dim mMenuSelected As String = e.Node.Name
Select Case e.Node.Name
[CODE]...
Even the visible doesnt work as it seems after the .show it makes the tree view visible again. how do i hide the treeview pls. someone guide me at the earliest. i feel it is not the prob. of treeview but something to do with the mdi form am i right ?
I'm new in development in vb.net IDE, and I need your advises on how to create multi form in one screen like a project properties screen in VB2008 IDE, thus when you you go to Menu Project -> Project Properties... you can see that screen is divided into two panes the left one for options to choose and the right one for configuration and preferences.
I need to know how to achive this and how to create similar to that thus if you choose any button from left the form content changes at right (ok is this single form and all controls were set to invisible /visible or is it muliform programming.
I have another question : how can I change the Left pane with Treeview control and choose my option from there.
I have coded in the older version of VB for years (VB6 and prior) and Recently I just began learning VB 2008. In my current project I made a mistake in a form name frmAuthors and so far I am unable to recover. The problem is that I tried to have the form inherit a class I had created (first mistake). The IDE generated a popup message stating the error and provided the option of changing from inheritance from system.windows.forms to the class I had created. I said yes just to see what would happen (I was bored so I was up for something new) and that's when the form got corrupted. Is there a way to let frmAuthors go back to recognizing itself as a form object and not a member of the object I had created?
View 2 RepliesThis always happens to me in Visual Basic. Whenever I save a project from one day and open it again using that same VB version the next day, I can never see the form design. But if I click on Debug, I can see the Form design and only use it as if it were a program.
View 1 RepliesIs the StartUp form of a program saved in a variable (i.e. from the name space My) ? I guess I can catch it during startup by using an Object Type variable during Load time , but I wonder if it is already defined anywhere else .

The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?
Look at the first section of code below:

This code is used to load a PDF in a PDF viewer. Because the PDFs are sometimes huge and there is no idea on how fast the machines are that will access the app, I have created a form to show that the program is busy thus the "ShareClass.LoadingIndicator" routine.
Here is the ShareClass.LoadingIndicator Routine:
Shared Sub LoadingIndicator()
Dim frm As New LoadingIndicator
frm.TransparencyKey = Color.Magenta
[CODE]...
The problem I have is that when the app runs and these subs fire, the LoadingIndicator form shows up but the ProgressBar1 and Label1 show as all black on the screen. I tried to make a screen shot of this but the screen shot showed nothing as if the form wasn't even there. How can I resolve this? What I would like to do is make the LoadingIndicator form be borderless so it appears as a label and progressbar laid ontop of the loading PDF reader as the PDF loads. If I take the transparency off it works fine.
I have a program that uses two forms. The program opens to the Main form, and the user can navigate to the other form from the Main form through use of a button. Here's the way I've currently written it: When the Main form loads, it declares and instantiates the other form during the load procedure. When the user presses a button, the second form is displayed by means of the ShowDialog method. On the second form, there is a Return to Main Screen button which closes the second form, bringing the user back to the Main form.
So, here's the structure of the code:
Code:
Public Class frmMainForm
Dim frmSecondForm As New SecondForm
Private Sub btnSecondForm_Click(blah, blah, blah) Handles blah, blah, blah
[CODE]...
Here's my reasoning: Originally, I wrote the code so that a new instance of the second form was created every time the button was pressed. The problem was that whatever data was displayed on the second form, previously, was lost when the user returned to it a second time. Since the user would be switching back and forth between these forms, frequently, I needed that data to persist.
What is the best practice for accomplishing this:
1) Declare and instantiate the second form on program start, as I have done, and use the button simply to show the form?
2) Declare and instantiate the second form each time the button is pressed but maintain the variables on the Main form and pass them ByRef to a custom constructor for the second form? Is this even possible?
3) Something else?

View 6 RepliesMy company's main software package includes a hefty configuration library which loads on startup. This config library includes some mandatory settings which, if not supplied (via command line arguments), cause the entire application to exit.
This has never been an issue for our users, who launch the software via scripts which have the needed command line arguments supplied automatically. But sometimes when debugging our software we developers forget to specify the necessary arguments in Visual Studio's debug options; it's then very annoying to be greeted with the message Config specification invalid -- missing required parameters X, Y, and Z -- shutting down (I'm paraphrasing, of course).[code]...
I have a program in vb express 2008 which I would like to publish in a little more professional manner than provided in the standard vb express package. I would at least like to include a "Terms of Use" document the user must agree to before installing the program. I have dovnloaded and installed web developer, c# and vs 2008. Do any of these include a professional installer? If not are there any free installer packages available? I am 72 and live on a limited budget so I cannot aford an expensive package for one program.

Im trying to see if you can make a GUI that can edit the Source code of your progam and then building it as an .exe..Say you have a login program and you wanted to change the password, All you do is go to the "Edit My Account" and go to password and then enter your old password and in the next textbox your new password. Then you would click save and it will ask for a directory and save it as .exe. And when you would start your newly compiled program you can used the program you just entered in.

On each of my form I have put an 'Exit' button. When user clicks it, another form is displayed (I don't want to use 'MessageBox') asking user whether he really wants to quit. If user clicks yes the form closes. If user clicks no, form is redisplayed.
However, out of 4 forms only one form refuses to redisplay. The code is exactly same on all forms. I have included 2 Express 2008 projects showing one form each in the zip file apps-ssk.zip
I'm upgrading a project from VB6 to VB2008.I have a routine that clears a combo box, named 'cmbDataTable' which could be on any form. I pass the form and the combo box is cleared.

I assumed it would be the same in VB2008 but I get the error.'cmbDataTable' is not a menber of 'System.Windows.Forms.Form'I am working my way through the project, first updating the global procedures - this is one - I haven't written the calls so cmbDataTable doesn't yet exist.
Where in Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition Software program do you specify a specific installation directory for a program?

I want to publish my program to try it out on another system and I want to ensure its installed in the directory structure I want.
In VB 2008, I have a Parent form with a combo box on it. There is a child form also with a combo box on it. I want to be able to change the values on the child form based on what the user selected from the main form. The user launches the child form from a toolbar on the Parent form. The following code is run:
[Code]...
What I want to do is if the Parent's combo box has "Red", "Blue", "Green" values and the user selects "Green", the child form's combo box(With the same values) will also change to "Green". (I do not need to change the Parent form if the child form changes.) I've tried changing the Child's combobox from the combobox's change event on the Parent form, and the code runs, but nothing changes on the child form.
I need to know the proper way, or maybe I should say, the different ways to call another form from a parent or preceding form. I am currently using ex: formname.showdialog() to call my next form, but I am uncertain if I should be using that in every situation. [code] Whats the difference between these different methods? (ex: .showdialog() , .show() )I tried both of these to open a temporary form to retrieve a persons name from a database, so as the users progresses through my training program they can keep track of their scores. But, I also call other forms as I branch through my program, from the main page, to a secondary page, to a testing page, to a results page and then back to the secondary page
