VS 2008 Retrieve A String Value From The Registry?
Apr 29, 2010
I have the following code to retrieve a string value from the registry.
Dim retval As String = String.Empty
Try
objManagementBaseObject = objManagementClass.GetMethodParameters("GetStringValue")
[Code]...
The problem is that if sValue doesn't exist, it generates a ManagementException. I want those errors ignored because I don't care if the value doesn't exist, it's entirely possible and acceptable. How can I "accept" those errors but display all others?
I have made this code and it does work with a normal string key, but with a multi-string value(REG_MULTI_SZ) key it does not.[code]The error is this : Conversion from type 'String()' to type 'String' is not valid. So how do i read from a multi-tring value registry key and list is all into the listbox ?
I know how to get a list of files in a local Windows machine's specific directory:
Dim dirInfo As DirectoryInfo = New DirectoryInfo("C:Temp") Dim fileListing() As FileInfo = dirInfo.GetFiles()
But how do I use this class for a mainframe system where user ID, password and 'change directory' command are needed?
When I attempt to just access the server without credentials and just do the Windows version and use the syntax "\server_nameAUTO:RPTS.", where 'AUTO:RPTS.' is the mainframe directory name I get the following error: "The given path's format is not supported."
When I just use '\server_name' I get: "The UNC path should be of the form \servershare."
I am looking for code examples that allow me to write a user's view settings (field sorted by, label selections, etc.) from the detail view of a file open (GetOpenFileName) API
I'm using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 in a Vista 64-bit OS. I'm trying to find an easy way (there must be one) to quickly retrieve from the registry the application file name and path to use in a Shell command to open a particular file. Specifically, I want the user in my app to be able to click on a PDF file and have the app open that PDF file using the application associated with PDF file types - Acrobat Reader, for example. Anyone have any suggestions as to proper coding & syntax for the following sequence?:
(1) Get name of .exe file associated with .pdf file type (most likely from the HKey Root Classes hive)
(2) Get path for the .exe file
(3) Shell("[pathname]appname.exe filename.pdf")
I've spent a couple of hours looking through the forums and haven't found what I'm looking for.
EDIT: See thread at [URL] I've had a look around and I can't quite make sense of trying to get the last write time of a registry key in vb.net. Im a bit of a beginner in vb.net but I really have done an exhaustive search and cant find anything I can make any sense of. I can open subkeys and get values using .GetValue("ValueName"), but as last write time isnt a value inside the key, this doesn't here.
I have had a look around and it seems in VB6 RegOpenKeyEx was used (to open the key and get a handle), then RegQueryInfoKey was used to get the last write time (of the subkey via its handle) BUT i cant get this to work. I have tried entering the following
I've tried googling for results, but none of the sample scrips I have located have done the trick. They all seem to throw a bunch of errors in Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.
I want to read a string from a registry key, if its 0 do one thing, and if its 1, do something else.
This code (if it works..) would at the first time create a sub key, and assign it to 1, but if its not existing, it would then show a few messageboxe's - But it doesnt work, even if I set it to 1 or 0, it won't work, it always displays the messages.
If My.Computer.Registry.GetValue("HKEY_CURRENT_USERA Sim Game StudiosA Sim Game - Business", "FirstRun", "1") Then MessageBox.Show("Your name is Jay J, you are 23 years old")
I am trying to do a query on the registry for uninstallation of a program but dont know where to start. The structure would be like so:If {123-456-789} exisits in registry then run Msi.exe /x {123-456-789}therwise run

Lets say my program requires a password of "vbforums" to bootup. The user enters "vbforums" and clicks enter to proceed to the program.I want to make a registry value in the registry under my program with that text. And now on load up i would want to be able to check to see if the correct password is in that specific spot in the registry.I have never fooled with the registry so im pretty lost, i tried doing a bit of searching on the forums but couldn't find anything. Anyone know how i would do this?
Anyway what im trying to do is create a launcher for a program (a game) and i am in need of assistance on this one thing Basically its an options window, i need each of the custom options to be saved to the INI file, for example
I am working on a VB.net winform application which makes extensive us of a mssql database. For the most part (almost exclusively), I have used the Visual Studio dataset for accessing the data. This means that the connection string was created as a program setting, and is saved in the app.config file. The problem that I have, is that I need to move this connection string to the system registry because it has been deemed by the powers that be that a config file is not secure enough.
I think that I can figure out how to access a registry key, and I know that I can save the string to a registry key, but the problem that I am running into is that I don't access the connection key in the code anywhere to easily swap out the registry key for the existing program setting. When VS creates the connection and dataset, where is the connection string referenced? Is there a simple way to swap these out? is it possible even to just reference the registry key in the setting so that I don't have to find where the setting is used and switch it out?
I thought you could use a structure as a container. I have line_1 with a line of data read in from a file. I only want to Look in position 1 of the line and position 8 for 9 and position 31 for 11. If I create a line_2 with the parts broken out for pieces that I want to look at then I could use a with statement right?
I want to store a string variable value in the windows registry If the below is a correct statement. My.Computer. Registry. SetValue ("HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINESYSTEMMyKey", "Start", "ABC")i will declare a string variable Dim strvalue as String strval = InputBox("Enter a string")and now i want to insert the User given value in the Registry Key as above in place of "ABC".
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings] "ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001 "ProxyServer"="socks=localhost:8080"
[Code]....
But so far, all the values have been getting muddled up (They are put in the wrong place or with others) and some values aren't added. I think it's because all the values are of different types, but I'm not sure how to fix it and specify what type of value they are.

I am using the NORTHWIND DatacBase in SQL SERVER 2000 and the table is Customers
In my application I have many different forms each use 3 different database. And right now I am placing the connection string in each form but when it is need to change I have to change in every form. Now what I want to store all connection string in a vb class and call them in every form. So that if I need to change I can do in that class. I have stored my connection string in database so even I don't want to connect to database again and again. I have some idea in which maybe a public class is used and some how I will call it on other forms.
Just like the title says; I want to use something like Mid(stringName, startIndex,[integerLength]), but instead of the third argument taking a string length, I want it to take the end character index. So in an example like this: alphabet = "ABCDEFG" partial = *method I want to use*(alphabet, 2, 4) 'partial would equal "BC"
