VS 2008 Writealltext Method Generate Some Unwanted Chars When Writing Txt Files?
Aug 19, 2009
I have a problem when writing some text to txt files. Here is my My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText("test.txt", tekst, False)where tekst is a string variable.
When opened in some HEX editor, test.txt begins with 3 unwanted characters - ASCII values: EF BB BF. Notepad isn't showing them.
Basically I am saving text to 2 seperate ini files, also saving the checkbox.checked value so my form can skip the login and auto start. My only problem is when a user saves the information to the INI files after writing them they automatically open up the INI files for display. When the form loads it automatically fills in the fields and if the checkbox is active it checks all the correct details then starts, only problem is it loads the checkbox1.checked ini file then starts the main menu. How can I skip this? and make it not show the ini files everytime they are called upon?
Dim aINIpath As String aINIpath = "User.ini" If File.Exists(aINIpath) = False Then
I am writing a little utility to generate some SQL files. I have a file which is generated from a string array of 400+ elements. It stops writing (without throwing an error) at arround 1000 characters or 380 lines. I am clearly missing something here. Question is what? I've tried (the remed lines of) flush but that seems to have no effect.[[code]...
I'm creating a radio streaming application, which plays a live stream from various radio stations in a small 'gadget' like application.
The user can add his own custom radio stations, by supplying a Name, a StreamUrl and, optionally, an Image that represents a logo or something of that radio station. The logo will be drawn on the main form when that station is selected.
I need to be able to save these custom stations, and I think it makes sense to use an XML file, which could then look something like this
<CustomStations> <Station> <Name>Radio 1</Name>
[code]....
Before I added the support for images, this worked fine, how to store the images. I want the user to be able to select any image from his harddrive, but I don't want to force him to keep that image in the same location afterwards. So I can't rely on the path that he selected. Instead, I want to simply load the image from the path he selected, and then save it somewhere else.
I am storing the XML file in the common application data path which I think is a good place for the images too.The problem is, how to determine a name for the images? I will always have just one image per custom radio station, so it makes sense to me to simply have one Images folder that holds all images, with a unique name.I can see two solutions:
1. Generate a random filename for every image
2. Use the Name of the radio station as the image name
For option 1, I suppose I could just create a string of 16 random characters and call that the filename. The problem of course is that there is no guarantee that I will get a unique filename. Yes, the chances of generating the same name twice randomly are very tiny, but it's still possible, and I just don't like that. How can I ensure that my random filename is unique? I suppose I could always drop the whole thing in a While loop that continues when the new filename already exists, but there must be a better way... Is there nothing in the framework that allows me to generate a unique random filename, in a directory of my choice (so not in the Temp directory...)
I like option 2 much better. The Name of a radio station is unique (there can't be two stations with the same name), so I don't have to worry about filenames conflicting. The problem with this approach is that there are no restrictions on the name. There's nothing stopping the user from naming their custom station "Radio~/aij!""_.fe" or something like that, which is obviously not a valid filename... So, I will have to do 'something' to generate a valid filename from the station name. I could simply remove all non-valid path characters from the name, but then I am no longer guaranteed a unique filename... Suppose there's two stations, one called "Radio/1" and one "Radio1", then after removing the invalid "/" character, the names will be the same and so I will generate the same image path for both....
I'm not sure what to call this so my search results weren't very helpful. I am writing an XML document that has computer paths and special chars such as '&'. XML does not like them, so I need to find a way to convert them. I looked at Apple's iTunes XML document and they have the following:Actions & Motives = Actions '&' Motives (without the ' ')C:/Documents and Settings/mmulhearn/My Music/iTunes = C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/mmulhearn/My%20Documents/My%20Music/iTunes/
Recently I implemented an interface which had some 130 members that i should implement (C#, but i think thats irrelevant). How can i generate the stubs for all those automatically, in VS 2008...If its not possible in VS 2008, i've also installed Coderush Express, can some one guide me on how to do that with CR Express ?
I'm getting a problem when writing text files using StreamWriter. The files read fine and they write fine if I'm not overwriting an existing file. They also write ok as long as I'm not writing over a file that only has one digit at the end of the name. For some reason when there are 2 digits at the end it crashes when I'm trying to save over an already existing text file. Here's my code.
above but 've tried all the different Encoding possibilites. Unicode, UTF32, UTF8, UTF7 as well as without those parameters listed where the close parentheses is right after StringForTextFile. I get the same result. If I'm writing a new text file that doesn't exist, then no problem or if I'm writing over an existing text file but it has 0 to 9 at the end then I'm ok but if I'm writing over an existing file and there is 10 or above(haven't tried triple digits or all values) then my application crashes. You see the test label in the code above because I was looking at exactly what file it was trying to overwrite and it is just as it should be.
Should I be using a different procedure? An example of a string that would cause a crash for the string StringForTextFile would be:
C:Name of My AppSeries1ScreenNumber10.txt
If it was being written for the first time then no problem or if the 10 at the end was 0 to 9 then no problem also. I've also tried and originally had it set up where there wasn't an If File.Exists(StringForTextFile) = True Then statement. It just always used the same code whether writing or overwriting and I wasn't having a problem that I remember. For some reason I started having a problem recently and I put the alternate methods of writing in.
Problem 1: I am running into a problem with my program that when UAC is active on Vistaaccess to C: and Program Files is not allowed. My program writes text files as a user types. Is there a safe place to write files to that may be some sort of standard instead of throwing files all over the place? Like maybe somewhere in the user's default folder's or something?
I'm working on my very first VB 2008 Express program, having a little bit of experience with VB 6.For my first VB 2008 program, I'm starting out simple. I have two text boxes, named Title and Director. You input text into each text box.I also have a button named GENERATE, which generates a text file named c.est.txt and stores the text box material.[cod]I know how to do this with VB 6, but not with VB 2008, and my research hasn't come up with an explanation of how to format this correctly. So how do I revise this code so that there is a line for each text box string, how do I get rid of the System.Windows.Forms.TextBox stuff and replace it with my own headers, and how do I double-space between lines?
My application creates a file by writing to System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory() & "data/" & filename...Now this works fine usually, but I just added a setup utility to the app, so now it installs to the program files directory. It installs correctly and creates the data folder, however when it tries to write the file it gets an exception "unauthorized access".
Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.
After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option. What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.
So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.
developed my app on a Vista laptop and deployed it on an XP desktop. When deployed the Form and even some controls are resized so text and portions of controls are not visible.Next I moved the project files and VB to the XP desktop and published the application on that machine. Same result, in fact the sizes were changed within the properties of the forms and controls within the project files
I'm creating a Shared (static) method in ASP.NET MVC so it can be used by any controller in my project. This static method needs to generate a URL. I think I need to use System.Web.Mvc.UrlHelper, but I can't figure out how to call it from within a static method. The constructor seems to want a RequestContext.
My program paste lots of stuff to a text box. Is it possible to replace every character that is not a number or a point to nothing? It may get lots of weird character there so is here way to replace them to and keeping numbers?
I know how to TextBox1.Text = TextBox1.Text.Replace("%", "") But its too many simbols to list, Can it be done easier?
[URL]..a good way to create Excel files without using Ms Excel, but this is C# source code,I used [URL]..to convert from C# to VB.NET,but after conversion There are some strange errors :

I am writing an application that has a user enter a wage per hour plus an anticipated salary increase percent and calculates the the users salary for the next 10 years. I have received some help from a few folks who are beginners like myself with visual basic and we are at a road block.
Public Class Form1

Error1Expression is not an array or a method, and cannot have an argument list
VB 2005 now offers different methods to write/read a file, such as the File.WriteAllText, the My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText and the StreamWriter. Can anybody explain when is it better to use which method, which one is more efficient in term of memory/processor use and performance time?
I have a textfile called Set.txt and what I want to do is to remove all multiple chars in the file.[code]I figured this is possible to do either checking for double letters and running a loop or maybe some regex, but i would like to know what you think the best way of doing this is.
I know I can use the Split function to split things, but that works with chars. I want to split pieces of text by a word, namely: [ CODE ] (without spaces) I tried entering that into the Split function but it would split [, not including CODE] Is there an other method to do that?
I'm using this code to read through each line in a textfile, and remove all that starts with a spesific "searchword":[code]But there are chars in the original textfile, that don't display the same in the new file.
I used WriteAllText to set the encoding for a text file. When I wrote it, everything worked out fine. However, strange characters or symbols appeared in some ofm y fields without my having typed it. why is this so? The encoding I'm using is UTF8. I used the WriteAllText to write the fields to file but did not use the ReadAllText to bring the data back into the fields or program.
I got a string that is going to be used as a filename. Is there any solution to find and replace non-valid chars with "" so I can use the string as a filename without any problem?
I have a database where the data contains some special chars. I retrive the data from the dbase (dbf) file with a sql statement and write it into a text file using vb.net. When I write the text file some of the special characters are not written the same way as in the dbf file, its written as a box. I'm using:
Using sw As StreamWriter = New StreamWriter(dbfFile, False, System.Text.Encoding.Default)
while writing to text file. I'm not sure how to read the exact data from the database.
