Jun 6, 2012
I need to write an app to delete files on server Older than X days to clean up disk space. The job/app needs to be scheduled to run say once in a month. Please suggest what would be the best way to handle it? Can Windows Workflow Foundaton be used to achieve the task?

I have a basic bit of code which i am using to delete text files within a given directory[code]...
intdays is a variable which determines how many days the files should be retained for.
To test the code i set intdays to 0, assuming that it would delete any files in the directoy. However it doesn't, but creates no errors.
The time "Now" is #2/8/2012 13:59:00 PM# which is greater than 0. But im confused as to why it doesnt then delete the file?

I need to delete older bkf files in a directory, only leaving the newest 20.
No, I can not just delete older than x days because there can be more than one backup file per day and some times it may be 2-3 days before a backup file appears.

I have a sheet which contains various data, from which one of them is dates. I would like a macro that will search through those dates and if it finds a date that is older than 6 months then it will delete the entire row.

I am currently working on a program that only I can use to send and retreve files from an external harddrive through my older laptop. But I have only just started and need help with the login form. I want my password and user on labels placed on form 2 and need form 1 to retreive them then I click the login button, however I want form1 to close if the user or password are incorrect. How could I go about placing an if then statment for if correct then it opens a new window if wrong then end program. Heres my login code so far.
Private Sub Login_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Login.Click
If User.Text = "*********" And Pass.Text = "*******" Then

I have a list of directories that get files added to by other users on my network.I would like a script (triggered by scheduled task) that would detect if there are files in these folders older than 15 minutes, and send me an email. I am able to run Batch/DOS, Python, Perl, or VBS - I have them all installed on the server. As long as they can be triggered from Scheduled task.
Example:
C:UsersFTPJoeSFromCustomer <files dropped here>
C:UsersFTPMarkFromCustomer <files dropped here>
C:UsersFTPRobbieFromCustomer <files dropped here>
C:UsersFTPTammyFromCustomer <files dropped here>

I'm trying to delete all the files in the same folder that have the same name but different extensions, such as CurrentWallpaper.bmp, CurrentWallpaper.jpg, CurrentWallpaper.png, without putting them in a separate folder. How could I go about doing this? I tried doing
Dim bg As String = dir + "" + Login.UsernameTextBox.Text
Kill(bg + "CurrentWallpaper.*")
but it didn't work. PS: I would also like to use the same technique for loading the image as a background image instead of having to do this:
Try
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(Login.UsernameTextBox.Text + "/CurrentWallpaper.jpg") Then
Me.BackgroundImage = Image.FromFile(Login.UsernameTextBox.Text + "/CurrentWallpaper.jpg")
End If

I'm copying over some files to a target directory on a daily basis. Before I move the new files over, I'd like to delete the old files under the target folder, possibly using System.IO.Directory.Delete()But my problem is, the target folder is on a public drive where everybody in the company could access, and I don't want to empty the folder while someone else might be using those files.I'm thinking whether there's a Class that check the status on the files in a specific directory before I come in and delete everything.(I know I would get an IOException if I disregard the status of the files and try to delete them)

I am new to VB but I do have VS2005 and I was looking at some code examples here on deleting files by days old and I need to do something similar, I would like to start a say C:myData**.xit and search through all sub folders under myData and move all the .xit files based on days old into a temp folder. Then I could verify them before I delete them manually to be safe. So how do I loop through all sub folders? and can I just modify this code to do that? Here is the code I was thinking about starting with [URL].
Dim files As System.Collections.ObjectModel.ReadOnlyCollection(Of String)
Dim singlefile As String
Dim CreatedOn As Date
'Declare the counter
Dim deletedcount As Integer = 0
[Code] .....

A while back I asked about going beyond basic FTP upload/download on this thread, and the response I got about using FtpWebRequest was very helpful. Now I'm looking at something that doesn't seem to be offered in FtpWebRequest: renaming a file on the server.
My situation: several times each month I update MyConfig.csv on my website. This file is generated on my computer by Excel to control who can access which files on the site, and it runs a bit over 1 MB. The scripts on the server parse through the file to keep things running smoothly. Given that the file can take some time to transfer, I typically will upload NewMyConfig.csv to the server with a commercial FTP program, then when it is in place I rename the existing file to MyConfigBackup20100521.csv and then rename NewMyConfig.csv to MyConfig.csv. This way, if there is a problem with the upload, everything keeps running smoothly because the existing MyConfig is undisturbed, and the window when a customer might get an error from the scripts because there is no MyConfig.csv is reduced to a couple of seconds between the two rename operations.
Now I'd like to automate all of this to happen with a VB program, but it looks like FtpWebRequest only allows you to rename directories, not individual files, on the server.

Is VB Express 2010 slower to compile and run that older versions of VB Express? I've installed it this weekend and it seems a little sluggish on my quad core computer with 1 gig of RAM. I have VB Express 2005 installed for my students at school and it seems to fly just fine. Those school computers are older P4s with 512k of RAM.

If a billing period always starts on say the 22nd of the month and ends on the 21st of the following month then all I'd have to really figure out is how many days are in the month the billing period started right? I hate working with Dates! This is what I've come up with using the idea above...Note, Dates are strings in the first column of a Listview in the format of, mm/dd/yyyy.
' get month from start of billing period (last item in LV) ' example of dates: 06/22/2011
Dim BillStartMonth = CInt(ListView1.Items(ListView1.Items.Count - 1).Text.Substring(0, 2))
' get Year from start of billing period (last item in LV)
